From A Conversation on a Romanian Road

She turned to him. His eyes were on the road. He really was a handsome man, and that soulful look in his eyes was no illusion. She knew that for a fact.

“How old are you, Max?”

“I don’t see what difference it makes.”

“Max?” She was prepared for something young, even as low as sixty-one, or God help her, fifty-nine.

“I will be forty-seven in November.”

“Oh, Max,” she said.

Expecting the southern end of the world to be dark and foreboding, I have been blown away by the majestic beauty of Antarctica. It is truly a magical place of incredible vistas. We keep running out of adjectives to describe it appropriately

Today we got to walk on fast ice which is a sheet of frozen seawater that is fastened to a land mass. The ship we are traveling on is in the background — the National Geographic Endurance. We are in a bay off of the Antarctica coast still below the Antartic Circle.

What does one wear in Antarctica? Lots of layers. For most excursions off the ship it includes waterproof boots, 2 pairs of socks, long underwear (preferably silk), regular pants and waterproof outer pants (primarily for riding in a zodiac), a shirt, sweater and parka. And of course gloves and a hat. The air temperature is actually not that cold (32 degrees) although it can be a lot colder when on the water in a zodiac. I am sure Hobbit will view us a wimps since it must be much colder in Alaska, but it is nice to stay warm and toasty.
