Beginnings: The Dog Who Knew Too Much

Sunday is when we do beginnings, taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™ (a strange word we have taken possession of). I overheard a conversation about public speaking recently, so how about today we open The Dog Who Knew Too Much?

Was I proud of Bernie or what?

True, he’d been pretty nervous going into this gig. I can always tell when Bernie’s nervous – which hardly ever happens, and never when we’re in action – because his smell sharpens a bit, although it’s still the best human smell there is, apples, bourbon, salt and pepper; but now, up on the stage, he was doing great.

“Which, um,” he was saying, “reminds me of a joke. “Sort of. Maybe not a joke,” he went on, turning a page, “more like a – “ and at that moment the whole wad of papers somehow jumped out of his hands, all the pages gliding down in different directions.

“The Dog Who Knew Too Much” is my favorite C&B cover!
Poor Bernie…I always kind of cringe when I read this part.

Very hot and humid in this neck of the woods…

    Good Sunday to all!

I can’t help but laugh when the papers fly all over.

    Good day to all.

Rio: I’ve always felt that one of the pleasures of reading is to try and figure out the plot before it is revealed, especially in a mystery novel.

This is one of my favorite beginnings. Everyone who has had to give a speech in front of people can relate.

    Stay hydrated.

So OFA has trademarked moniker…”The symbol “TM” stands for trademark, while “SM” stands for service mark. These symbols may be used for any mark which a person claims rights to, even if they have not officially filed a registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office”

Need relief from the heat? The Hobbit Hotel is open and it is cool here for the foreseeable future. It has been an awful summer so far.

Hobbit, we will raise a cool one to that.
Took the g-son to lunch and the Chattanooga market today.
Love the cover of The Dog Who Knew too Much.
    Good day to all!

Stover!…I am totally opposite. I want the writer to be way smarter than me when writing a mystery…grunt!… This book, “The Plot” is well worth reading but maybe I’ve read too many Agatha Christie novels this past year or so…sniff!…I suspect everyone and everything. Hercule taught me…heh!heh!…This time I was right. For actually one of the very rare times I knew what happened like in the middle of the book, which is sad (for me.)…wheeze!

Rose!…If She is a favorite writer of yours I would say read the book. But be sure to let me know what youse are thinking while you are reading it….groan!…Can you tell how lonely I have become??…sniff!

Papers!…When my friend was in fifth grade she had a teacher who was bent on making kids stand up in front of the class and “perform”…ugh!…Mrs Rope. She will never forget Mrs Rope….bah!…So there was one assignment that called for two kids to be news reporters. “Do something with it!”…yeep!…So my friend came up with the idea of how to avoid speaking in front of the class by having the wind, thank you other kid, blow all her papers off the desk so she did not know what to say…heh!…while other kid was scrabbling on the ground to round up the papers my friend was saying “Well that concludes our report tonight”. Or something as bad…snort!…I’d say she got out of that stupid assignment in a very tricky way…chuffle!

Rope!…I have another Mrs Rope story if anyone is interested…snort!…The things I learn from my friend these days….gurgle!

RIO! I have really liked the three books I have read by Jean Hanff Korelitz. I will have to see if Grizz can download “The Plot” for me.

I like the idea your Friend came up with to avoid public speaking. I had to do some presentations when I went back to college. I did not like it. Mrs. Rope sounds like a real charmer…Snort!

Mom hated public speaking! But she found that if she could become a character and portray the character it was so much easier. That is why she majored in theater and to this day if she can put on a character she can do anything!

Sigh!…Has anyone here read the book, a very thin book non-fiction, called “The Diving Bell And The Butterfly”??…sniff!…Or has anyone seen the Movie? My friend watched it years ago and was so moved…wheeze!…Then she rented it again just recently and we watched it..and it just attacked our souls…wuffle!…What this man was dealt in life all the good and then the bad of the bad….weeep!…If you’ve never bothered to watch a French film, this is one you should bother with….sniffle!
