Beginnings

Sunday is when we do beginnings, taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™. Since Christmas is only 20 days away – meaning the shopping window is nineteen days, 23 hours, 59 minutes – there’s really no choice. Here’s the first paragraph of It’s A Wonderful Woof, the new Chet and Bernie holiday novel. Now when you open the book you’ll be able to skip right to the second paragraph.

The Muertos throw the best Christmas party in the whole Valley. The Valley’s where we live, me and Bernie. It goes on forever in all directions, and is almost certainly in Arizona, based on things I hear from time to time. That’s not important. Is it important that the Muertos are the roughest, toughest biker gang around? Maybe to you, but not to us. The Little Detective Agency deals with the roughest and toughest every day. Little is Bernie’s last name, I’m Chet, pure and simple, and the agency’s just the two of us. Why would we need anyone else? That’s the important part.

After several years for not bothering this year my Mother would like to decorate for Christmas. So I took her tree shopping. Less than five minutes and we had one. I no sooner got her out of the car with her walker than I hailed a lot attendant and asked where the 3-4 foot Nobles were. Of course they were on the opposite side of the lot, but he had some in front that were cut off tops of larger trees. He held a few up and we said “that one”. I sent my Mom back to sit in the car and by the time I paid for it it was bundled and I took it back and set it beside her in the back seat as a passenger. We were home about 15 min. after we left. Fastest tree shopping ever. It’s in a bucket in the back yard and we’ll likely put it up this weekend. Hopefully it will last the two weeks until Christmas in that inferno they call their home. My Dad has the heat cranked up to 80º 24/7.

I’ve decorated my little table top ornament holder with Hallmark dog ornaments holding the photos of Diana and Freyja and a few from Ramses. This year I also have Chet and a dog poop ornament from Etsy with both a 2020 and a 2021 since both years sucked. The dog wears a surgical mask which I think is hilarious.
