On Sunday we do beginnings, taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™. Is there a rule that it has to be a book that’s already published? Let’s ignore it! Here’s the beginning of Tender Is The Bite, coming July 7. (And please don’t forget – all who preorder will get for free the digital short story The Numbers After Two; it will just pop into your inbox on  pub date.)

“I think we’re being followed,” Bernie said.

That had to be one of Bernie’s jokes. Have I mentioned that he can be quite the jokester? Probably not, since we’re just getting started, but who else except Bernie would even think of saying that? We were creeping along at walking speed on the East Canyon Freeway at rush hour, stuck in an endless river of traffic – of course we were being followed, followed by too many cars to count! Not only too many for me to count – I don’t go past two – but also for Bernie. And Bernie’s always the smartest human in the room, one of the reasons the Little Detective Agency is so successful, leaving out the finances part. It’s called that on account of Bernie’s last name being Little. I’m Chet, pure and simple, not the smartest human in the room, in fact, not human. I bring other things to the table.

We thought that Chet usually took things away from the table!
Happy Mother’s Day to all moms whether your kids are two legged four-legged furry babies or feathered.

I miss you, Chet. Arthur is no Chet.

    Just finished Paws vs Claws.

No matter how slow I got I’ll have that and Olive, Mabel and Me read before July 6.

The refrigerator is now rescheduled for delivery June 15th and I am still digging up gas pipe. Although it looks like the leak might be at either end, either where it comes from the meter or goes in to the house as those aren’t wrapped. I’m digging a hole in the middle to see if the pipe I had replaced 30 years ago is indeed wrapped. If it is, I’ll be calling the plumber on Monday to come out and replace both ends and see if that is a fix. It only has to last another 30 years. Then it will be someone else’s problem.

Meanwhile I have decided to weed my possessions and purge the house of excess stuff. Over the next ten years. I’ll revisit it every year and sell, donate, give or toss until I’ve got it way down and see where my health is. Then I’ll decide if I want to get rid of more and move into a senior community or stay and pay for a health aide when the time comes. Once the yard and house are set and manageable, I may decide staying is better than leaving. Of course, the house will be paid off by then and can become income property.

One thing I am not purging is my autographed books and I have plenty. The first few Chet and Bernie are autographed and I’m hoping for more someday if book tours ever happen again. Maybe Mysterious Galaxy will invite Spencer Quinn back for a reading. Christmas would be nice for It’s a Wonderful Woof.

Did I mention I have an autographed Donald J. Westlake and two Nicholas Meyer? And a postcard typed and signed by Isaac Asimov.

MLAIUPPA: sounds like to have a good plan. I am thinking along the same lines. Wishing you good health to accomplish it in the next few years. It is good to prepare for the future.
