On Sunday we do beginnings, taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker. How about today we take a look at the start of a novel that’s not even published yet? If that’s too crazy, please stop reading now. Otherwise, here’s the beginning of Tender Is The Bite, coming July 7:

“I think we’re being followed,” Bernie said.

That had to be one of Bernie’s jokes. Have I mentioned that he can be quite the jokester? Probably not, since we’re just getting started, but who else except Bernie would even think of saying that? We were creeping along at walking speed on the East Canyon Freeway at rush hour, stuck in an endless river of traffic – of course we were being followed, followed by too many cars to count! Not only too many for me to count – I don’t go past two – but also for Bernie. And Bernie’s always the smartest human in the room, one of the reasons the Little Detective Agency is so successful, leaving out the finances part. It’s called that on account of Bernie’s last name being Little. I’m Chet, pure and simple, not the smartest human in the room, in fact, not human. I bring other things to the table.

I think beginnings are the hardest. Especially for the C&B series as you don’t want to repeat yourself.

A big thanks to Hobbit who went above and beyond and donated again to the Wonder Puppies.

I posted a photo of us on Diana’s walk page. It’s us in a local park in a neighborhood that I used to live in over 30 years ago. Still a very nice park. And some nice people took our photo. She’s in her best collar. It’s a Christmas plaid but you can’t really tell. Green and red with snowflakes and a lovely red rhinestone heart in the middle of the bow. She really enjoyed herself. It was a lovely day and there were some people and even dogs in the park. Not doing the Walk the Animals but she didn’t care. She had a great time greeting people, sniffing trees and I enjoyed watching her do it. I joined her wearing red and my Walk the Animals mask.

MLAIUPPA: I had gotten on the computer to check Diana’s donation page and got up and went to start dinner. Mr. Big got on said computer and made another donation. I was not angry as it went to a good cause.

I am hoping that in two weeks Sadie’s leg injury is healed, the snow is gone and we can start a little walking together.

I read today when I should have done other things; however, with more and more daylight, the day is not over!

Ah, that explains who Mr. Big is. Please give him a big thank you from me and Diana. I can’t find the place where you send the e-mail thankyous. When I do I’ll send one. Or maybe he didn’t leave his e-mail and that’s why it’s not there.

Reading is good. It will keep Sadie occupied but still and calm. Before she knows it the leg will be healed and she’ll be able to go out and play again. Does Sadie enjoy you reading Chet and Bernie to her? Diana doesn’t care what I read to her. She just likes the sound of my voice. I’m approaching the middle of Ruff vs Fluff. She’s OK with just putting her head on my lap and me reading silently. She gets stroked with my free hand so reading time is a favorite time for her. 20 min in bed right before I go to sleep. Biggest lap dog ever. But boy, she keeps me warm at night.
