On Sundays we do beginnings, taking a look at the first few lines of all the Peter Abrahams books including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker – mostly so we can use that word! Moniker! Since The Sound and the Furry came up this week – God knows why – how about we go with its beginning?

“One thing’s for sure,” the lawyer said, handing Bernie our check, “you earned every cent.”

Bernie tucked the check in – oh, no – the chest pocket of his Hawaiian shirt, just about his nicest Hawaiian shirt, with the hula dancers and the trombones, but that wasn’t the point. The point was we’d had chest pocket problems in the past, more than once. And possibly more than twice, but I wouldn’t know, since I don’t count past two. What I do know is that checks have a way of falling out of chest pockets.

“What’s he barking about?” the lawyer said.

Bernie glanced at me. “Just wants to get rolling,” he said. That wasn’t it at all: what I wanted was for Bernie to put that check in his front pants pocket where it would be safe. But then I realized that I did kind of want to get rolling. Wow! That was Bernie, knowing my own mind better than I did. And I knew his exactly the same way!

Mom really likes it when we all three run outside and sit in the yard and face different directions and bark and bark and bark!
From a two legged point of view, what does that mean?

I see that Howie from last night is a feisty little pup.

As I look at the day ahead of me, I can tell I am not going to be productive. But as long as my animals are fed and happy, nothing else is important.

Twice in my life I have lost $50 bills that I had put in the front pocket of pants. I always wished that whoever found it really needed money and considered it a miracle.

Mr. Big snickered when Howie called Rio “Wio.” I think he has plans to follow suit. I will try and lecture him on civility but then again he is a cat. He will not let go of the memory of a couple of uncivil encounters while Rio was a guest at the Hobbit Hotel.

My plan for the next hour is to grab a book and read in my recliner under a heated lap blanket. Doesn’t that sound wonderful? Only snacks are missing as I need to go grocery shopping (or make cookies but then that would mean work).

I had salmon for dinner last night (yum), tuna for breakfast (yum) and shredded baked chicken for dinner (more yum). The attendant was relaxing in the recliner and I climbed up on her chest and gave you a purr and a head bump to let her know that she was doing a good job and to keep it up. I can’t want for breakfast tomorrow!

As I was purring, the intruder arrived with her whiny meowing. She ruins everything. She wants to be the alpha kitty but as long as I am 23 pounds that is not going to happen. No it is not.
