Beginnings
On Sundays we do beginnings – taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker™. How about Paw and Order, since Amazon has chosen it as a Kindle Daily Deal for the entire month of May? $1.99! A whole book for what’s maybe a teacup of gas at the pump.
(Chet’s Friend of the Month will be revealed tomorrow so there’w still time to enter at the FB page.)
We blasted out of bayou country, Bernie behind the wheel, me in the shotgun seat. Our ride’s a real old Porsche, the oldest we’ve had in our whole career. The last one got blown up; the one before that went off a cliff. And who can remember the one before that? Not me, amigo, except for how loud train whistles turn out to be from up real close. The point is old Porsches are how we roll at the Little Detective Agency, just one of the things that makes us so successful, leaving out the finances part, where we’ve run into some hiccups I won’t go into now. And don’t get me started on hiccups, which is the annoying thing about them, namely that you can’t stop. What else do you need to know? Bernie’s last name is Little, which is how come we’re the Little Detective Agency. I’m Chet, pure and simple.

Good day to all.

Greetings!
Chet, I feel you when it comes to hiccups. Lately, I have been getting them a lot. Sometimes I get them as I am trying to get to sleep at night.
It is a beautiful, sunny day in this neck of the woods.

I know MLAIUPPA reposted this yesterday (thanks for the shout out), but just in case, here it is again from YouTube. BTW, I loved Freyja’s picture!
Enjoy the day!

Growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, I know Route 66 very well — it ran right through the center of Albuquerque, known to us as Central Avenue!

Glad you liked Freyja’s photo. I posted the YouTube link in case no one noticed that Google had made a video, it wasn’t just a picture. The video was really nice. I loved the watercolor. They really did a nice job. Thank you for bringing that to our attention.
Today is May Day. It is also National Lemonade Day and Mother Goose Day.
Yesterday was National Shelter Pet Adoption Day. It’s wonderful it fell on a Saturday. I’m hoping a lot of shelters had a special adoption going on yesterday and maybe extended it to today too. Like maybe reduced fees or something.
I’ve done my part with Freyja.
You can tell how nervous and anxious she is in her new environment.
She is really one happy dog. She finds joy in every day and loves me to bits. Perhaps because I’ve promised her she will never go back to a shelter again and she gets treats and toys. While I might get a scolding if dinner is late, she doesn’t bark or howl. She doesn’t care what the neighbors are doing on the other side of the fence. That, apparently is Diana’s job and she takes it very seriously.
Poor Diana. It seems she has inherited allergies from her Golden Retriever ancestors. She has atopic dermatitis. It’s not fleas and it’s not food. Vet says it’s environmental. She licks her armpits and forearms, gets ear infections and acne bumps on her head. If it’s not caught she will eventually get the bumps on her back and start loosing hair. It was mild after she turned two but after her third birthday it got really bad. We had it under control for a few months but it’s back. I noticed the tree and grass pollen levels are really high so I think that is what is triggering it. I’m back to bathing her with her medicated shampoo once a week and that is helping. I am going to add the medicated wipes and mousse for in between baths but I am also giving her Benedryl and that is helping immensely. She isn’t as irritated with the neighbors as she has been and I’m sure everyone is relieved.
There isn’t much you can do about it. You can either treat the symptoms, which I am doing, or you can go through really expensive tests like they do with people and then she can get shots every 2-8 weeks like people do to desensitize themselves. That would be for the rest of her life. She is already vet-phobic and I don’t think having to go to the vet every month would be good for her. It will either make her worse or she will eventually learn to accept it but I’m not going to take the chance of making her worse. We’ve made too much good progress with the new Fear-free vet. As is, I have to give her some pills to sedate her for regular exams. For the dermatitis they actually had to put her out to examine her and get blood samples. Poor thing. I’m hoping if I can relieve the itching she will be a calmer happier girl. I’ll be checking the pollen levels every day when I check the weather. Today the high will be 69 and the pollen levels remain high so it will be a pill day. The pollen counts looks to remain high for the rest of the week so hot dogs daily.
Freyja will get treats too. New toys arrive on Tuesday. Freyja hit the shelter rescue lottery and has no idea how lucky she was.

Speaking of National Shelter Adoption Day, Diana pawPrints, Freyja Grey and Dolly are on team Wonder Puppies for the annual Walk the Animals with our local Humane Society. We will not be doing the group walk at Liberty Station this year but will continue our independent walk in our own neighborhood on Saturday, May 7. I’ll be taking Dolly on her walk on Thursday, May 5 when I see my Mom for Mother’s Day.
If you would like to donate or even join our team (you can join and then walk from wherever you are) here is the link. I think:

If walking is a regular thing with your puppies, or even an “Alternative Dog” consider joining our team and doing a walk from wherever you are, whenever you’d like. I’d love to see photos of your neighborhood.
