All who preorder Of Mutts And Men, the new Chet and Bernie novel (July) will receive a bonus short story for free. Just save your receipt. Starting April 1 the publisher will have a preorder site set up where you’ll be able to send the receipt. Here are some answers to questions that are coming up.

1. Please don’t send receipts here. The publisher will provide a place starting April 1.
2. The name of the story on the Heart of Barkness preorder campaign was Upper Story.
3. For those interested in getting signed copies at this year’s tour – the tour is not set up yet. But when it is, all appearances will be posted here. (I now have a Hawaiian shirt I may sport at one of them.)
4. If you’ve already preordered and can’t find your receipt – please look again. But if you still can’t, I’ll see what the publisher has to say. Bottom line: don’t worry.
5. The title of the new story – which I’m finishing today – will be coming soon, but good preparation for reading it – although not necessary – would be to check out one of the previous short stories, namely The Iggy Chronicles, Volume One.
5. Publishers are fond of preorders. Writers are fond of fond publishers.

Heart of Barkness, the new Chet and Bernie novel, comes out on Tuesday. That means there’s still time for the canny among you to take advantage of the publisher’s preorder offer and get the new Chet and Bernie short story – called Upper Story for reasons that will become apparent – for free. Free! One of the best words in the language! Although canny is also good.

There’s still time to preorder HEART OF BARKNESS and get the new Chet and Bernie short story – called Upper Story for reasons that will become apparent – for free. “Free” and “new” are the two best words in advertising, according to long-ago ad man David Ogilvy. This one has both! Sort of!

Beginnings

On Sundays we do beginnings, taking a look at all the books written by Peter Abrahams including under the Spencer Quinn (strange word coming up warning) moniker. Here’s the beginning of the brand new Chet and Bernie short story UPPER STORY – free to all pre-orderers of HEART OF BARKNESS (pub date July 2, link below).

A window high up at the back of a warehouse in South Pedroia slid open and out climbed Chuckie Kindrachuk. Upper story dudes tend to be on the lean and nimble side, in my experience, but Chuckie was neither. He shifted his lumpy backpack, which seemed to prefer riding on Chuckie’s lumpy side instead of his lumpy back, and extended a hand for the nearest drainpipe. The moon shone on his moon-shaped face. Hey! Had Chuckie actually added a few pounds since the last time I’d seen him? He extended his hand a little more, the look in his eyes excited, hopeful, and a bit crazy, a look you often saw in perps at just such a moment. You had to like Chuckie, and I did. In fact, I liked most of the perps and gangbangers we’d sent up the river – not a river with water in it, our rivers being pretty much dry here in the Valley.
