Spence and Admin are still kicking the biopsy question around, whatever that might mean. Bernie says that sometimes he wants to crack their pointy head together. Meanwhile, we’re getting excited about the Super Bowl. We always go to a party at the Dry Gulch Steak House and Saloon, where they’ve got a nice patio out back. Last year Bernie wore his best Hawaiian shirt, the one with the trumpets. He lost it to a gambler named Sid Siegel, but that won’t happen this year since Sid’s now wearing an orange jumpsuit up at Central State. Once we worked a case, me and Bernie, involving an actual football player who had something bad going on the side, can’t remember what. I ended up tackling him – in the end zone! – although it was only a practice. Still, Sergeant Torres said I was a natural-born linebacker. Not sure what that is, but I felt pretty good about it. Still do!

We made a quick pit stop at Donut Heaven. Hey! There was Rick Torres, our buddy from Missing Persons. We parked cop style, driver’s side door to driver’s side door. “Chet in the mood for a cruller?” Rick said. What a question!

“Heard about this mountain lion attack?” Rick said.

Uh-oh. I’d had some experience in this area – might be in Dog On It, can’t quite remember. But don’t get me started on mountain lions.

“Did it happen here?” Bernie said.

“Nope,” Rick said. “Happened in California. This couple was out hiking in the Santa Anas and got attacked by a mountain lion. Their dog defended them, got mauled pretty bad, but saved their lives. Black lab mix, name of Hoagie.”

“Is he going to be okay?” Bernie said.

“Expected to live,” Rick said.

Whew. Way to go, Hoagie! Get well soon.
