Happy Patriots’ Day!

April 16th, 2018 Posted 8:34 am

To the rest of the country – from one of the places that celebrates it (the 2 being Mass. and Maine). Bad weather, so the Red Sox traditional 11 AM game is canceled, but the Marathon is on. As for what it’s about: the battle of Lexington green and the Old North Bridge in Concord. And freedom!

One if by land, and two if by sea;
And I on the opposite shore will be,
Ready to ride and spread the alarm
Through every Middlesex village and farm,
For the country-folk to be up and to arm.

Baseball: Looking Back

Spence: Just looking back at your World Series picks, made here April 10.

Pete: Why?

Spence: Doesn’t there have to be accountability in life? Or at least continuity?

Pete: Kafka didn’t think so.

Spence: But could be hit the curve ball? Here were your picks: Red Sox versus Cubs. So you’re half alive.

Pete: Beats Kafka.

Happy Patriots’ Day, Everybody!

“But most of our readers are saying, ‘Huh?'” says Spence.

“They don’t have Patriots’ Day?” says Admin.

“No – except for in Maine, where it’s Patriot’s Day. But the point is it’s in memory of the start of the Revolutionary War at the battles of Lexington Green and the Old North Bridge in Concord. That’s what Emerson was referencing here:

By the rude bridge that arched the flood,
Their flag to April’s breeze unfurled,
Here once the embattled farmers stood,
And fired the shot heard round the world.”

“Embattled farmers,” Admin says. “That’s good stuff.”

“And now we have embattled marathoners every Patriots’ Day, as well as a morning game at Fenway Park featuring embattled Red Sox. It’s a nice partial sort of holiday.”

“More holidays!”
