Thanks to the NFL – especially the players – for giving us a season this year. And now – has anyone seen any new movies that are at least somewhat cheerful and smart at the same time? This one comes up – very tangentially – in It’s A Wonderful Woof, the Christmas/holiday Chet and Bernie novel coming after Tender Is The Bite (“both preorderable!” – Mrs. Publicist.)

Admin: I’m afraid all these injuries are going to sour me on NFL football.

Spence: Are you saying this because you’re a Patriots fan and Rob Gronkowski got hurt (again!) last night?

Admin: So? Are you saying one can’t believe the right things for the wrong reasons?

What’s In a Name?

Ms. Publicist: Fifteenth of the month was yesterday, but it’s not too late for our What’s In A Name feature, where Spence and I discuss a character name from the Chet and Bernie books. I’ve just read Tail of Vengeance, the new e-story coming July 8, and I’m interested in Maxie “Auto” Bonn.

Spence: Ah. The detective Chet and Bernie deal with briefly, but crucially, in the story.

Ms. P: Yes. And who works with a dog, just as Bernie does, in this case a rather inattentive dog named Barko.

Spence: Right. At one point it occurs to Bernie that Maxie and Barko are a sort of funhouse mirror image of himself and Chet. As for the name, I stole it. There was an NFL linebacker in the ’50’s named Maxie Baughan. I just loved the name for some reason and it stuck with me. I changed Baughan to Bonn, not wanting any confusion with the former player, and Bonn being a German city must have reminded me of bahn as in autobahn, and thus the nickname – Maxie “Auto” Bonn.

Ms. P: Words can be fun! See you July 15 for another episode of What’s In A Name?

Welcome Cassie (with Don) and here they are, reading To Fetch  A Thief:

Hi Chet, I\'m Cassie, and I like to hear Don read me your stories. Right now he is reading about cheetos from To Fetch a Thief. I can almost taste them!
