ARF – review

“Quinn beautifully evokes life on the water in this small Southern town and his young characters are delightful. One might be certain that Bowser is Chet in another state — or maybe a brother? Their voice is remarkably similar.

This series will be sure to delight dog-lovers and mystery lovers and anyone who enjoys a good read. Perfect for middle grade readers from fourth through sixth grade.” – Pamela Kramer,

National Examiner Review: The Dog Who Knew Too Much

October 5th, 2011 Posted 7:52 am

The Dog Who Knew Too Much by Spencer Quinn is the latest in the Chet and Bernie series of fun mysteries. Bernie is a burnt out veteran who runs a private detective agency and Chet is a K9 working dog dropout. Together they make a formidable team.

The story is told from Chet’s perspective most of the time but that works well here. Mr. Quinn has a good feel for a dog’s mind and cleverly uses Chet to not only advance the story line but also provide background and tension relief.

In this book, Bernie and Chet have been hired to provide “bodyguard” service for a woman who is heading out to a wilderness camp to pick up her son. Unfortunately her son disappears during an overnight hike out in the woods. Throw in an ex-husband with issues, a corrupt security firm that would like Chet on their team and a mountain community that survives off meth labs. And did I forget the gold mine?

The characters are always memorable and realistic with great dialogue along with Chet’s observations. Bernie has great insights into people and a heart as big as his dog.

I have found each book in this series to be a quick but highly enjoyable read. My one complaint is the cover artwork on this one. It is beautiful, but anyone who has read the series and knows Chet realizes there is no way he is a Border Collie. Not at 100 pounds and not as a police dog drop out.

The book sells for $25. You can order this via your local independent bookstore or check out Barnes and Noble. You can also order this as a Kindle book via – Debra Eldredge
