Mayflower Dogs
November 20th, 2009 Posted 8:40 am
Bernie says there were two Mayflower dogs and there are records of both being in the Plymouth Colony. One was a mastiff – good for guarding; the other a Springer Spaniel – good for hunting. Their names aren’t known but they belonged to a young man, probably in his twenties, named John Goodman. John Goodman didn’t survive the first winter and what became of the dogs isn’t known.
Bernie also says there’s a great mastiff scene in one of the Aubrey/Maturin novels by Patrick O’Brian. Bernie loves those novels. He’s trying to find where the scene is but we’ve got a busy day. For one thing, he has to see whether the deep-frying pot has developed any leaks since last year. That happened once! Oh, boy. But the fire department guys were great.
