“You’re talking about Washington and Lincoln?” Spence says.

“Correct. I’ll say no more. But somehow we missed the death of Al Berard last February. He was a wonderful musician hailing from down where WOOF takes place. R.I.P.”

“With the Gettysburg anniversary and all,” says Admin, “have we ever discussed Fido, Lincoln’s dog?”

“Not to my knowledge,” says Spence. “But we could search the site.”

“Where’s the fun in that?” says Admin. “Lincoln loved Fido (Fido as the pre-eminent generic dog name dates from this particular dog) but Mary Todd L. refused to let Fido come to Washington when Lincoln won the presidency. He had photos of Fido taken in Springfield as a comfort for his sons (3 still alive at that point). Apparently Mary Todd L. had concerns about muddy tracks in the White House. Fido was still living in Springfield when they brought the body back.”



Memorial Day

“Memorial Day was a response to the Civil War?” Spence says.

“Right,” says Admin. “In lots of ways we’re a very lucky country. For example, when we absolutely had to have someone like Lincoln, there he was.”
