“What a nice day,” says Spence.

“What did you get?” Admin says.

“I’m not sure that’s what it’s really about.”

“I got a cool jacket. What did you get?”

“It was more being with everyone, catching up, joking around, building a big fire, popping the cork on that champagne we’ve been saving – and thanks,, what a great bottle! – and watching the dogs go crazy, like they were caught up in the happiness contagion.”

“It’s the coolest jacket I’ve ever had.”

Break in the Action, Part Two

July 4th, 2009 Posted 7:41 am

“Independence Day, Chet,” Bernie said. I knew something was up, just from the smell of fireworks coming from the bag he was carrying. Fireworks! “Hey, easy, big guy.” Oops. I got back down.

“The house is a shambles,” Bernie said, “and people are coming over.” I watched Bernie tidy up for a while. Then he poured himself a beer and took a break. We sat out back, a beautiful morning with a clear blue sky.

“Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” Bernie said. He sipped his beer. “Here’s a question – can you even achieve happiness through pursuit? Maybe it’s the wrong way to go.” No idea what Bernie was talking about, but I was pretty happy at that moment. Then I picked up the scent of … yes! – a forgotten hot dog under the grille, maybe a bit burned but I’m not too fussy that way. I got even happier.

Happy Fourth, everybody!

Kickin’ Back

April 18th, 2009 Posted 9:53 am

This morning Bernie woke up and said, “Hey, Chet – what you doing on the bed?” And then: “And where’s my pillow?” Tough questions, a little too tough for me. After he had some coffee – talk about a great smell! – he said, “Tell you what – why don’t we just forget everything today and go for a long walk?” I forgot everything just like that.

One of the great things about our place on Mesquite Road is how it backs up on the canyon. Bernie opened the gate and there we were, off on a great ramble, Bernie huffing and puffing as we climbed the trail. There’s a lookout with a bench at the top. Bernie sat down and took a deep breath. “Just take in that view, Chet. Is this some kind of planet or what?” Lost me there, but then he gave me a nice scratch between the ears. Ah. “Happiness is possible, Chet. Got to keep that in mind.”  Okeydoke.
