Beginnings

On Sundays we take a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker. How about we work backward through the Chet and Bernie series, starting with the latest, Of Mutts And Men? There are all sorts of ways to begin a novel. This one strikes an existential note.

“Here’s where I am with time,” says Admin. “We go backward in our memories. We go forward in our imaginations. But what have we got for the here and now?”
“Didn’t get enough sleep, did you?” says Spence. “And besides, we’re supposed to be thinking about recipes.”
“Something with Slim Jims, perhaps?”
