” – the three were two Pomeranians and a Pekinese named Sun Yat-Sen (owned by the Harpers of Harper and Row). But that doesn’t account for a Newfoundland named Rigel. See the contemporaneous clipping below from the New York Herald, April 21, 1912 (hat tip – Melanie; and also belated happy birthday! And happy birthday to Rio!). But no mention of Rigel in the linked story! Kind of a puzzler. Maybe we can get to the bottom of this.”

Note: It now appears that the Rigel story is pure legend of the feel-good kind. The link above is accurate – three dogs, all small, survived. Time to quote Emily Litella.
