What’s Wrong With Tin Futures?

“She was dancing in a show at the Silver Dollar,” Foster was saying. “Under the name of Ethel – didn’t want to use her real name, which was Astrid Jason – but I didn’t know that at the time.”

“Ethel seems like a strange choice for a chorus girl,” Bernie said.

Chorus girls? My ears pricked up. They don’t match, by the way, something I found out not too long ago. Is it a problem? Not for me. But back to chorus girls – were they at all like Autumn and Tulip, those nice young ladies who worked for Livia Moon at her Friendly Coffee And More place in Pottsdale, which is one of the nicest parts of the whole Valley? The And More part was behind a door at the back, and what went on there I’m not too sure about. All I know is that Autumn and Tulip are excellent patters. Is that in To Fetch A Thief or somewhere else?

“Strange how?” said Foster.

“Ethel?” said Bernie. “Kind of old-fashioned. Not sexy.”

“The surname she used was Ready,” Foster said. “Ethel Ready.”

“Oh,” said Bernie.

MLK + Pop Quiz (Part Two)

“The content of their character,” Bernie says. “Can we ever get to that?” He scratches between my ears, just so. Turns out my ears don’t exactly match. Didn’t know that until someone mentioned it, possibly in Dog On It, or maybe Thereby Hangs A Tail, hard to keep it all straight. But that’s not the point. The point is – so what if my ears don’t match?

Here’s part two of the quiz. Winner gets a copy of Thereby Hangs A Tail, signed by Spencer Quinn and stamped by me, Chet.

1. Who was Bernie’s favorite boxer?

2. Who is the Pepsi guy in Coke country?

3. What hides the safe in Bernie’s office? Bonus: What is its thematic significance?

4. According to Bernie, how many galaxies are in the universe?

5. Write a sentence or two on the difference between Princess and Babycakes.

Pencils down!

President Obama

The president was in town a couple of days ago, or maybe more. As the days go by they get a bit blurry – ever notice that? Right now is always best, so clear. I’m feeling tip-top, by the way.

Where was I? The president. We got to see him, on account of Lt. Stine, our buddy, kind of, in Metro PD. What the president does, exactly, is your guess as good as mine, but there was big excitement. We didn’t get that close, me and Bernie, but plenty close enough for me to see one important thing: the president has great ears. Bernie likes him and also feels sorry for him, no idea why. Those ears mean the president can hear way better than most humans. That has to be good, right?
