Dogs + Baseball = Good; Dogs + Baseball + Canada = Bad

“Hear about the blockbuster trade, or rather salary dump, by the Miami Marlins?” Admin says.

“Of course,” says Spence. “Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle and more, in return for not much..”

“Exactly. But there’s a catch – Slater – Mark  Buehrle’s Staffordshire terrier – can’t go with him. Read all about it here.”–mlb.html

Welcome Alfred.

And Saturday afternoon in Osterville Mass.: Spence.

English Setters: Extinction?

January 25th, 2012 Posted 8:56 am

“Here’s something from  the BBC – ” Spence begins.

“The Beeb!” says Admin.

“I’m sorry?”

“That’s what the Brits call it – the Beeb.”

“And do Canadians call the CBC the Ceeb?”

“I don’t know,” Admin says. “Canadians maybe once were sort of Britty but I don’t think they are now.”

“Back to the article. It seems that the English setter and some other native UK breeds are threatened with extinction, surpassed in popularity by other breeds.” He glances at Admin. “Especially breeds favored by celebrities.”

Admin – what’s the human expression? takes the bait? “Celebrities? Just because some vacant botox-face sports something means other people are suddenly panting for  it? I’d want the very opposite!”

Spence thinks that over. “What’s the opposite of Prada?”

“What the hell is Prada?”

Welcome Tom the church cat.

Americans! Step Up!

July 29th, 2011 Posted 8:13 am

“Almost the end of the month,” says Spence.

“Still time to be eligible for August’s Friend of the Month contest,” says Admin. “All you have to do is enter a photo in the Friends of Chet section. Winner gets to have the photo displayed for the month in the special Friend of the Month box, and the winner’s human companion receives a copy of the most recent Chet and Bernie book – in this case, To Fetch A Thief – signed by you.”

“Right,” says Spence. “But is there maybe just a little too much emphasis on winning?”

“Huh?” says Admin. “Winning is as American as apple pie.”

Spence thinks about that. “So,” he says, “if you won an apple pie contest, you’d be … ?”

“The uber American,” says Admin. “More American than … than Bobby Orr!”

“Isn’t he Canadian?”

Admin’s face – not the most pleasant to begin with – gets even more that way. Then all of a sudden he’s laughing. And so’s Spence. Laughing and laughing. These guys! Not so easy to understand.

Welcome Abigail and Zen. Owen and Patch – please retry.

And congratulations to Rosie on her new staff job at the Village Voice. Look for the Rosie Gray byline.

Oh yeah – don’t forget the Simon and Schuster sweepstakes.

Not Good News, But We Can’t Ignore It

February 1st, 2011 Posted 8:22 am

“Usually news coming out of Canada is pretty good,” Bernie says, “but this I can’t even read.”

He tosses the paper aside, looks very upset. I go over and sit beside him.
