Admin: How was yesterday’s BOW WOW appearance at Eight Cousins Books?

Spence: Lots of kids, and none of them threw anything! Therefore: success! Not only that, but one of the kids, maybe ten years old, already knew lots about bull sharks.

Admin: Relevant since there’s a bull shark named Mr. Nice Guy in the story. Spoiler alert: he’s not nice. Did you bore the kids with tales of your spearfishing days in the Bahamas?

Spence: Boredom’s a big part of life. Gotta prepare them!

Advice for the Artist: From BOW WOW

“A shark?” Birdie said. “You’re tattooing a shark on Snoozy’s chest?”

“By request. Specifically a bull shark. Note the huge head, hefty snout, and that mouthful of long white sharpies. And those killer eyes! Had to be a bull shark, Snoozy said. We did some back and forth on whether it should be in profile or straight on. Ended up going with straight on, like it’s comin’ atcha. There are times for subtlety in art, but there are also times to bring the hammer. With a bull shark, you bring the hammer.”

Bull Sharks (More)

“I’m coming to that,” the sheriff said. “First, is it true that bull sharks can survive in fresh water?”

Grammy nodded.

“How can they do that, Grammy?” Birdie said.

“Kidneys,” said Grammy. “They got special kidneys.”

“So finding bull sharks up rivers and bayous wouldn’t be surprising,” the sheriff said.

“Can’t say I’d put it like that,” said Grammy. “A bit of a shock to most folks, especially if they’re swimming at the time.”

– from BOW WOW (May 30).

What’s In A Name?

May 15th, 2017 Posted 8:33 am

Mrs. Publicist: Fifteenth of the month, so time for What’s In A Name, where Spence discusses a character name from the Chet and Bernie series.

Spencer Quinn: How about we throw a curveball and go for a name from the Bowser and Birdie middle-grade series?

Mrs. P: I understand that adults can read them too.

SQ: But only if they have fake ID. One of the important supporting characters – supporting in a highly negative way – in BOW WOW, coming May 30 – is a bull shark. I had some experience with bull sharks during my spearfishing days long ago in the Bahamas. And at last I’m getting some mileage out of it!

Mrs. P: So the bull shark in BOW WOW has a name?

SQ: Mr. Nice Guy. It seemed right.

Mrs. P: Does Bowser encounter Mr. Nice Guy one on one?

SQ: No spoilers!

Mrs. P: Thanks, Spence! See you next month for more of What’s In A Name!
