Sunday morning. How do I know? Elvis gospel on the radio. We’re taking it easy. I’m lying in a patch of sunshine. Bernie’s reading the paper. “Here’s something interesting,” Bernie says. “Bed bugs are making a comeback.” Bed bugs? A new one on me. I know bugs, of course, have snapped up the odd one from time to time, not sure why. “Ever since they banned DDT,” Bernie goes on. “But guess what – dogs can be trained to sniff out exactly where they are, and their eggs, too.” He holds up the paper. “Here’s a picture of Roscoe, the bed-bug-sniffing beagle.”

I thump my tail, just once and not hard: we’re taking it easy today.
