I sat up. Bernie was gazing at the photo. I could see it, too. One of my guys was in the picture? Where? And then I spotted her: a tiny fluffball with huge dark eyes, reclining on a satin pillow. I knew satin pillows on account of Leda having had one, although it got chewed up in a kind of frenzy, the details of the episode not too clear in my mind. But that satin taste: so strange and interesting, a vivid memory. I glanced around the Dry Gulch bar: no satin in view.

Everything is different underwater: the sights, so blurry; the sounds, actually kind of clear; the smells, not nearly so strong as above water and coming to me in a different way, impossible to describe; and the feel, which is the best part.

But not now. Now it was all bad. I was spinning slowly in blackness and also going down. I didn’t want to go down, wanted more than anything to go up. Up was the only place not so completely black. Swim, big guy! You’re a good swimmer. Swim! Bernie’s voice, so clear he could have been right beside me. The truth was he was even closer than that. I swam toward the place of incomplete blackness.

What’s In A Name: Iggy

Ms. Publicist: Fifteenth of the month, when we discuss names. You’ve mentioned, Spence, how important names were to you, and that you actually can’t write the character until you have the right name. How about this month we talk about Iggy, Chet’s best pal, especially since this summer’s e-story is called The Iggy Chronicles, Volume 1?

Spencer Quinn: I’m not the first artist (for want of a better word) to fall for the appeal of the name Iggy. In that I stand on the shoulders of Jim Osterberg, Jr. And may I recommend in passing his duet with Francoise Hardy of I’ll Be Seeing You.

Ms. P: And what is the appeal of the name Iggy?

Spence: For me, the appeal was that the character came fully formed as soon as the name popped into my mind. Iggy’s all about id, lack of restraint, totally unselfconscious goofiness and yearning.

Ms. P: And then to have him pretty much shut inside the Parsons’s house for the whole series so far, watching Chet through the window?

Spence: Makes the odd moment when they do get together -

Ms. P: Like the bathroom scene in The Dog Who Knew Too Much?

Spence: All the more explosive.

Ms. P: Thanks, Spence. See you next month.

I hopped in. Butch, my K-9 School pal, was already there, taking up most of the space. I nudged him over toward his side. Butch was one huge dude, everything about him enormous – excepting his eyes which were tiny and dust-colored – and took a lot of nudging. No problem – I’m a good nudger. But hey! So was Butch, which I found out pronto from how he nudged me back. Then there was nothing to do but nudge him again, even harder. And what did he do? Renudged me, still harder. My pal Butch was turning out to be more fun than I’d thought. I gathered my strength, possibly tearing the seat cover with one of my back claws, just to judge from the sound, and gave Butch a nudge he wouldn’t be forgetting anytime soon. Surprise: Butch seemed to forget it immediately, gathering his own strength – what was that? another ripping sound? – and –

Bobby pounded on the steel grill separating front from back in the cruiser. “Knock it the hell off, you two!” he yelled. “Lookin’ to flunk out of the program right this goddamn second? Cause I’ll do it in a heartbeat.”

Whatever that was didn’t sound good. Butch and I knocked it off and lay low, growling at each other from time to time, but real quiet, so Bobby couldn’t hear.
