Zoos
“They’re closing some zoo in Boston,” Bernie said. Zoos: I’d never been to one, but knew what they were from TV. Bernie’s not a big fan of zoos. “Prison for animals,” he calls them.
He scanned the paper. “What’s going to happen to the animals?” he said. “The governor of the state says they’re not going to be euthanized, but they can’t be sent back to the wild either.” Bernie didn’t look happy. Euthanized? Didn’t know that one. I went over and gave Bernie a little bump with my head. He snapped out of not being happy, gave me a smile. The human smile is one of the best things about them, and Bernie’s is the nicest.
“Let’s go pick up that film,” he said. “It’s time to wrap up this case.”
I was at the door.
