Zeus: Welcome To Law Enforcement!

“Here’s something right up our alley,” Bernie says. “Thanks to Katy McGinty at the Desert Sun. Seems they’ve got a new member of the K-9 squad, namely Zeus, a good-looking two-year-old. Rick Daniels, the city manager, is a big fan on canine units. ‘They not only track down, but you’ve got someone who takes off running, and they’re not going to outrun a 120-pound German shepherd.'”

No news there. Chasing down a perp: it doesn’t get much better than that. So much fun, but the best moment is when they’re running their very fastest and they take a quick glance back and see: you’re right on their heels! The look in their eyes! Just one of the reasons this is the best job in the world.

Welcome BearSpiritDog, Audio Fan, Holly.

    Good morning Chet!
Great to see Bear’s pic on the Friends page.
We have our own canine unit here in Oley. Due to budget cuts, there was a big push to fire him!!! We said that you never fire someone who is doing a great job and also putting his life on the line every single day. Mom talked to each supervisor and got them to agree that Jack stays! They found other things to cut instead.

Last year there was a robbery near our house. The perps ran to our house to try to get in, but the four-legged policeman held them up against our house until the two-legged policemen could catch up. Great dog!

    Good for you OleyHowlers!

Sam: I can see you holding a robber at bay! Fierce Princess!

For some reason, people who don’t know us tend not to come up to the house.

Eagle update: They made it through the storm!

Good morning everyone. I’m going to ride the bike to work…very carefully.
Canine law enforcement. I’m all for it.

OleyHowlers: Tell your mom, way to talk some sense into them.

LizF: Glare ice is smooth as glass.

CHarris: I usually shuffle on ice but as almost all the ice and snow had melted I thought I was safe. I was walking along on the dusting of snow when I hit a low spot on the sidewalk where the water had collected then froze overnight. Whomp. Even an hour later that ice was water again.

    Good morning!

Dawson, glad you are moving a little better today. The bike ride will probably help the muscles, but be careful.

Another cold icky day here. Should start warming up after today, but more rains are coming too. We want Spring!

Chet: I can’t wait to read about your next chase with a perp. I like Zeus’ name.

Good morning to everyone. Cold, windy and rainy here. I walked between rain drops…no ice. Hope Wolfie’s mom and Dawson are feeling better.

I think that Sam was referring to the police dog who held the thief at bay until the police got there. However, I’m sure Sam can be just as fierce as Princess is in THAT.

Dawson – Dr. Mollypop suggests that you do NOT ride the bike to work today. You need to take it easy and take anti-inflammatories like Aleve for a couple of days. Your healing will be better.

I’m not sure about copyright protection of cookbooks. In academia we have what is called “fair usage.” As long as the source is cited and is not used extensively, you have not broken copyright law. CHarris said she will look into it. Perhaps Wookie’s dad knows.

Liz: If you recommend PDF than I agree with that. Thank you for organizing and designing the Plunderers cookbook.

K-9 Units are the best! They put their heart and soul into their jobs and, yes, their lives on the line every day.

O.Howlers: Good for your Mom in convincing the others to keep Jack!

Thanks to Liz, B, Barb&Maggie, T&G (and of course, Rio) Our great Cookbook is soon to be a reality! This will make a wonderful keepsake and gift.

I hope all of you who have experienced ill health and accidents are on the mend. Sending healing thoughts your way.

The weather here has improved considerably over the past few days. Will try to send some your way!

I previously was stationed at an outpost of the Police department, and I tell you, I let no perps into our area. I was ready for some leg chomping, if the situation had arisen. Min-pins are deceptively fierce. Think dobermans in a handy travel size.

Barb does not have great tech skills, but would be glad to help on the cookbook, in a low tech way. I don’t think we have to worry much about copy right problems, espceiclaly if we are just doing it for ourselves. If we want to mass market, that might be a differnt story. I am picturing this as more of a fun, good memories type of thing for the Plunderers.

My tribe doesn’t do police work unless it is for the Canadian Mounties.
All police dogs should have the protective vests just like the two-legged law enforcement guys/girls have. Civilians sometimes have fund raisers to get the police dogs the vests.

Thank you Stover for the book title. Little did I know when I was looking at the photo of the pug bobble head that I would need to remember the title of the book beside it.

from copyright.gov: “Copyright law does not protect recipes that are mere listings of ingredients. Nor does it protect other mere listings of ingredients such as those found in formulas, compounds, or prescriptions. Copyright protection may, however, extend to substantial literary expression—a description, explanation, or illustration, for example—that accompanies a recipe or formula or to a combination of recipes, as in a cookbook.”

This link provides a quick Q&A about the issue:
    http://www.angelfire.com/mi/FAST/reciperules.html

Basically, a list of ingredients is not copyrighted. However, the way cooking instructions are written may be copyrighted (bake at 350 would *not* be copyrighted). If a bunch of recipes come from one published source, that may be a copyright infringement.

    Still researching…

Good morning all. Macy, it’s so cute to think of you as a travel size doberman! And fierce – good girl.

Barb: your plan sounds good. People email their recipes to you, you send them to B for editing, she puts them all into a Word file and emails to me when they’re ready. We should have a deadline – e.g all recipes to Barb by the end of April. B, how long would you need for editing?

If there are photos we need to take them ourselves, that would be the only copyright issue I can foresee. But it could be done without, with just little illustrations of bowls or utensils or simple ingredients or…something (I’d use a font for that).

The main thing is NOT to embed the pictures in the Word files, as I can’t access them. Separately or not at all is the rule.

Chet’s Chefs is a bit tongue twistery for me. Can we play on the title of DishLickers – that’s what they call the greyhound races here, do you use it there? Dishlicking by The Plunderers of ChetTheDog.com?

  75. dawson

Hi everyone – we are dusting our paws off on our aprons and are just about ready to bring the desserts out.
but before we do, we would like to say that we do like the name chow Hounds and Picky Eaters. Especially since a lot of recipes we may have are specially for special diets like gluten free or low salt.
But we will also say that for desserts, all bets are off. We didn’t go for necessarily healthy or restricted. So, you will all have to decide which ones would be ok for you, or if you need to adapt a recipe.
we’re just really sorry Siber can’t be with us tonight….we have something special planned. Oh well, maybe Rebecca will show up.
So, Friends, here we go – come on in and have some dessert!!!

Mama thinks that when she has company, she wants time to visit with them, so most of her desserts are pretty easy to make, even if they look fancy. Hope you all like them.

Macy’s Mini Pin-Wheels – Sweet with just a hint of sassy spice

1 package refrigerated pie crusts (rolled or folded type)
    1 cup pecans, chopped fine
    1/3 cup sugar
    2 TBLS honey
    1 tsp cinnamon

    1 tsp lemon juice
    1 TBL honey
    cinnamon sugar

Unfold pie crusts on square of wax paper and allow to come to room temp – about 15 minutes
While crusts are warming, mix together the nuts, sugar, 2 TBLS honey and cinnamon.
Gently roll the crusts into a more square shape- do not make too thin, and don’t worry too much about a perfect shape.
Sprinkle half the nut mix on each crust. Gently push the nuts down into the dough. Using the wax paper to guide the dough, start from one side and gently roll the dough jelly roll fashion into a log with the nut mixture inside. Wrap the finished roll in the wax paper and refrigerate for two hours or more.
    Preheat oven to 375
Remove rolled up dough from refrigerator, using a sharp serrated knife, cut into slices that are about ¾ to 1 inch thick. Lay slices on a very lightly greased baking sheet. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until crust is golden brown. Let cool for a couple of minutes, and move to cooling rack.
Mix 1 TBL honey with 1 tsp lemon juice. Drizzle over the pinwheels, and dust with cinnamon sugar.

Professor Bee’s Pecan Pie – Grammatically correct and extra sweet

1 unbaked pie shell (make it simple – buy one frozen or one to unroll)

    2 TBLS flour
    ½ cup sugar
    3 eggs
    ½ cup softened butter
    dash salt
    1 cup light corn syrup
    1 tsp vanilla

    A Little Bit of Heaven
For Bess, BearSpiritDog, FattyKitty, Peabody and all the others from the Rainbow Bridge

    THE CRUST
    2 cups unsweetened shredded coconut
    ½ cup sugar
    2 large egg whites
    1 TBL pure vanilla extract
    large dash of salt

    THE FIRST FILLING
    ½ cup chocolate bits
2/3 cup all fruit raspberry jam at room temperature

    THE SECOND FILLING
1 package dark chocolate instant pudding mix
1 1/2 cup milk or light cream
3 TBLS amaretto OR 1 tsp almond extract

    THE TOPPING
2 cups whipped cream or CoolWhip
2 TBLS amaretto OR 1 tsp almond extract

OPTIONS – chocolate shavings, chocolate sprinkles, fresh raspberries, slivered almonds

Preheat oven to 350. Lightly beat the egg whites, sugar and vanilla just till frothy. Fold in the coconut and salt. Press into the bottom and sides of a lightly greased 9” pie pan.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

Place the chocolate bits in microwave safe measuring cup or small bowl, and heat for 15 seconds, stir, heat for 15 seconds – continue until bits are melted and chocolate is soft enough to pour. Pour into coconut crust, and spread to the edges. Allow to cool.
Stir the raspberry jam until it is soft enough to pour and spread smoothly over the chocolate. (if necessary, you can heat the jam in the microwave very briefly to soften)

Mix pudding mix, milk and amaretto just until blended, then beat at medium speed for 2 minutes. (if using almond extract, add another tablespoon of milk) Pour over the raspberry layer. Chill for at least one hour.

Fold amaretto into whipped cream and spread over the top. Decorate with one or more of the optional garnishes.

So, this one is a little more complicated, but its worth it!

    Siber’s Dream of Alaska

The First Part is a Meringue Shell. Don’t be intimidated -meringue is not hard to make if you follow three very simple rules.

3 egg whites at room temperature
    1 tsp vanilla
    ¼ tsp cream of tartar
    dash salt
    1 cup sugar

    1. The eggs must be at room temperature.
    2. Use a glass or metal bowl, and wash it out first with soap and hot water. Any tiny remnant of grease or oil will keep the meringue from forming.
    3. Be sure that no yolk escapes into the whites. It is better to separate each egg into two small bowls and pour the white into the mixing bowl, one at a time. That way, if your third egg yolk breaks, you won’t ruin the whole batch. Just put that egg aside for another use, and try again.
Preheat oven to 300. Line a baking sheet with cooking parchment or brown paper. Draw a 9 inch circle on the paper.
In a good size mixing bowl, beat the egg whites, vanilla, cream of tartar and salt just until soft peaks form. Gradually add the sugar, beating continuously until stiff peaks form.
Being sure that your utensil has no grease or oil on it, scoop the meringue onto the center of the paper circle and spread it to the edges, building up the sides to form a nest like shape. Sprinkle just a little sugar on the edges of the nest. Bake at 300 for about 50 minutes. Turn off the oven but do not open the door for at least one hour. Remove the meringue shell, peel off the paper and set on a pretty plate. Set aside for now.

    The Second Part

1 box vanilla instant pudding and pie filling mix
1 cup Bailey’s Irish Cream Non Alcoholic Coffee Creamer
(or Bailey’s Crème Brulee or Toffee Almond Cream)
    ½ cup milk
Stir pudding mix, coffee creamer and milk together till blended, beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Chill for at least one hour.

    The Third Part

    1 small cluster green grapes
    1 small cluster red grapes
    1 egg white
    1 tsp water
    ½ cup sugar

While the meringue is baking, cut the grapes into clusters of two or three grapes, leaving just a bit of stem intact. Beat the egg white and water in a small bowl, just enough to break down the viscosity. Put the sugar in a small bowl. Dip each cluster of grapes into the egg white, gently shake excess off, and then lay in the bowl of sugar. Shake the sugar until it coats the grape cluster. Remove the cluster and set on a rack to dry. Continue to make frosted clusters, half green, half red until you have about 8 or 9 of each. Set aside till serving time.

Assemble at the last minute before serving. Heap the pudding mix into the meringue shell, making peaks and valleys. Very lightly sprinkle sugar over the pudding “snow”. Decorate the top with the frosted grapes in pretty little jumbles. Decorate the edges of the plate with the extra grape clusters.
This is especially pretty in candlelight, where the sugar will sparkle like snow in the starlight.

Wow, Melanie’s singing Waltzing Matilda!! Who knew there was a newfy version? Very appropriate with Anzac Day coming up next week. I can contribute a recipe for anzac biscuits to the Dishlickers book, by the way (thanks for the vote, Rio! Cricket does that bowl thing too).

Those desserts sound sensational T&G. Pecan pie – yum! Hey, the first item on the blueberry cobbler recipe – is that the butter? I’ve never had cobbler, it looks deeeelish on the pics i found on google images.

And before you go home tonight, make sure to grab a take home bag over there by the door. This is the end of this dinner party, and we wanted to make sure you all had favors to take home with you – don’t leave yet, but don’t leave without these:

Cookies for Wookie – special treats for the Nation Within

12 cups of rolled oats (this is one of the giant canisters of plain oats)
    4 cups whole wheat flour
    1 cup cornmeal
    8 eggs
    ¾ cup oil
    2/3 cup honey
    ½ cup molasses
    2 cups milk
1 large can solid pack pumpkin or squash (not pie filling, just plain pumpkin)
    then pick one:
    4 mashed bananas
    2 cups chunky applesauce
    2 cups cooked carrots, mashed
1 bag frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry

Dump all the ingredients into a really big bowl. Moosh it all around with your hands, breaking up the eggs, and getting the veggies between your fingers. ( a spoon just will not work here, this is down and dirty cooking) Mix and mix and mix until it is completely blended.

Preheat the oven to 325. Spray 3 large baking sheets with no stick spray. Divide the batter evenly and pat out to fill the tray. Score the top into the size cookies you want. Bake for 1 hour. Switch trays around so the top tray is now in the middle, bottom is on top, middle is on the bottom, and continue to bake one hour more.
Turn the oven off and let the cookies sit in the closed oven overnight. In the morning, remove from oven, and break on the score lines. Most cookies will still feel a little soft. Turn the oven back on to 350 degrees, and put any soft cookies back in the oven to dry out. Depending on how hard or soft the cookies were, bake for 45 minutes to an hour until they are completely dry and crunchy. These will last just as long as store bought cookies – except your dog won’t let them.

There really aren’t any rules to the ingredients. You can use white flour, or half wheat, half white. You can use wheat germ, or less cornmeal. Add as many veggies as you want, and just add more flour if needed.
Never met a doggie who wouldn’t eat these, no matter how they were made.

As far as those Newfs and that horrible little purple thing…oh wait a minute – its RIO! Hahaa haha haaa – Rio is PURPLE! We always knew he had a sweet creamy center, but now he’s PURPLE. Oh gosh, where the heck is Melanie with her camera???

Hello Oley Howlers, there’s ice cream here somewhere. I heard it was mandatory.

Excuse me while I try some of Siber’s Dream of Alaska…I do love meringue. Too bad Siber couldn’t make it.

Wow! Are the Newf’s actually waltzing?

Dawson -we think that dance is actually the Boot Scoot Boogie. Seeing Newfs do it kinda takes the magic out of it, doesn’t it?

Hello, all, I hated to leave mom with a bum arm and all, even if she did leave me forever with Carol the petsitter. I am sorry to miss the party, and especially Miss Nattie. The nice ladiies at the church sent over some bbq chicken, so I won’t starve. Party, on!

So, looks like everyone is having funnn…..whoa! Is that a PURPLE pug???
Mama is in the kitchen, sitting under the table saying “we didn’t get moderated, we didn’t get moderated” Guess she was a little worried about that.
Did someone say Natasha was here? Where? We wanna see her!
Dawson, how in the world did you parachute with your wrist in a sling? We think the next time you jump out of a plane, you should yell “Napoleon!!!”

Tupper and Gilly: That sling went bye-bye this morning.
Good point about yelling “Napoleon” although I don’t think either of those guys were ever in a plane.
Hey Staff: Can you give me a ride home when you go? I think I need a shot of insulin.

Ummm Rio – did you say the way to Siber’s heart is through Alaska? Hmm. wonder if Mama’s recipe would qualify. We do think Siber is kinda cute. We never said so before because there was so much other competition, what between Macy and Cricket and Natasha…..but hey, if all it takes is Alaska, we got it covered. Ohhh Siiiiiigh-ber

Can we get Wookies grandpa to come? I hear that he gives the best tummies in the world!

Thank you all so much for coming these past weeks. It has been lots of fun, and we sure hope you liked the food.
We are always playing in the kitchen and hope that some of you have recipes to share. Can’t wait for the cookbook. Its always great to see recipes from different parts of the country (and Australia too)
don’t forget to get your bags of cookies before you go. Stay as long as you like, but Gilly is already passed out under the table, and Mama is sound asleep with Franklin as a pillow. Yawwnnn…I think that Franklin’s shoulder is looking awfully comfy too….
    G’night all.

Wow, great time and I am sugared out. Good thing we have a pilot tonight and I don’t have to fly the jet home.

Thanks so much Tupper and Gilly and you Herbs. Wonderful hospitality and we shared a lot of recipes. Hopefully they will make their way into the cookbook soon.

Night newfs. Night Liz. Night Rio. Night Macy the (fierce) Min pin….Who’s left. Nat and Sammy, Yawn, c’mon Dawson. Home is calling me.

Sorry Rio, but the Herbs texted your friend to warn her. She has a lovely warm bath ready for you outside the car and a great big fluffy towel for you to travel in. Heh
You are not getting into her car in that state.

You can try with the Alice trick, but she already knows. She is no dummy. Maybe you tripped and fell. Yes, that’s the ticket.

T&G the food! amazing! Well done.

I’m glad i didn’t bump into an evil purple pug on his way out and my way in…

Clarkson looks like that guy in Blue Bloods in that picture! A bit… Very much the policeman.

So – what’s our new deadline for recipes? I can see T&G will have NO trouble sending through a whole bunch. What about mid-May?

T&G: Sorry I’m so late getting here, but Dad had a lacrosse game tonoght. Not that I got to go, but Mom went. The good news is that the Spartans won! They started out the season rather poorly — three losses in a row. But then they came back in grand fashion — tonight marked their sixth win in a row! Now we just have to keep our paws crossed that they do well in the playoffs!

I see that everyone did a pretty good job of eating up the desserts. I thought I’d at least get a few crumbs, but it looks like everyone licked all the dishes clean! What a bunch of dishlickers you are!!! I hope there’s at least a bag of Wookie’s Cookies left for me! They sound delish — which of the alternate ingredients did your mom use for this batch, T&G? I hope it’s the applesauce — I’m partial to apples!

By the way, I like the name “DishLickers,” but did you know that you can’t copyright the title of a book? So even if there is a book out there titled “Delish,” we could still make our own book with that same title! Everyday people come in the library and ask Mom for a certain book, but nine times out of ten there is more than one book with that title. So then she has to ask for the author’s name — and nine times out of ten the patron doesn’t know it! So then it’s a guessing game — what’s it about? When was it written? Sometimes Mom has to be like a detective!

Mom’s favorite story was one time when she was working in a bookstore and a woman came in and said, “I don’t know the name of the book or any of the authors, but there’s a romance book that has stories by three different writers, and the cover is red.” Well, Mom started looking through all the romance books, and finally came up with a book that met all the criteria. She was so happy, until the woman said, “No, that’s not it!”

This same woman had a little boy with her — about three or four years old. The little boy asked if he could get a book, too. The woman LAUGHED at him and said, “You don’t even know how to read yet! When you learn how to read I’ll buy you all the books you want.” Mom wanted to strangle her! For not knowing the name or author, and for squashing that little boy’s joy at the thought of getting his own book!!!

Kirby: yes, it is true that titles aren’t copyrighted. It is just that if we can think of another title, especially one so unique as DishLickers, it would be best.

Hello there! This is kind of off topic but I need some guidance from an established blog.
Is it very difficult to set up your own blog? I’m not very
techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick.

I’m thinking about making my own but I’m not sure where to begin. Do you have any points or suggestions?
    Cheers
