Yesterday in Pasadena
The nation within was well represented at yesterday’s event at the wonderful Vroman’s bookstore, a classic “third place.” Shout-out to Connie.
Welcome alert dude.
Today at noon – Spence will be at the Seattle Mystery Bookshop (117 Cherry St.).

Many nice dogs. What does a “classic ‘third place'” mean?
Good afternoon.
11:55 am on September 16th, 2013
Great Picture of Spence with the a Pack from the Nation Within!
Our Pack’s vests are orange. It’s that time of year here.
Will be out of the loop for most of the day. Time for my second feline scan of the year. Wish I could use the Kats here for that!
To Ponder . . this is how I feel when I finish a Chet and Bernie book!
11:58 am on September 16th, 2013
I have no idea B.Stover, but I bet it has to do with baseball.
12:01 pm on September 16th, 2013
Hi Melanie! I should have known…baseball.
Junior: What kind of pie does your Lady want?
12:07 pm on September 16th, 2013
Third place – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Third_place
12:18 pm on September 16th, 2013
Thanks Chet!
That makes Chet’s Blog a Classic Third Place or a Classic Third Space!
Excellent. It also means I don’t get pie. Sigh
Off the the hospital.
12:20 pm on September 16th, 2013
So, That bookstore let dogs into meet Spence.
Wose, That is a cute picture of a pug in a raft.
Rio, No hurry but check your SDD when able.
12:33 pm on September 16th, 2013
Gooood afternoon, everyone! Mom checked with the Alpharetta, GA book store and they will NOT allow members of the nation within into the store š Looks like lots of fun was had in So Cal! Hope OFA’s weather curse is over. We are late as mom ran Pookey to the v e t. She is still breaking out since the racoon fight. We are trying a different round of antibiotics. Mom and Daddy Dawg are going to have some FUN this afternoon, they are planning on giving Pookster another haircut. We have only seen that happen when she is unconscious. Doggie downers, anyone? Melanie, good luck with the kitty scan.
Monday, Monday, can’t trust that day….
12:40 pm on September 16th, 2013
Thank you Chet. I was thinking the same thing as Melanie: Chet’s blog is a “third place.” Cool!
Melanie: You can have pie. What kind?
12:48 pm on September 16th, 2013
LOBSTER pie, of course
12:56 pm on September 16th, 2013
Weary!…I wonder if Spence is getting weary from all the traveling…sniff!…Those time-zones!
Safe!…My friend made it to the busy-place this morning and is tryig to catch up on busy-stuff…grunt!…She found out that she has to work two more weeks at her old job before she can start her new job…grump!spit!phooey!
1:23 pm on September 16th, 2013
Waiting for the vampires to work. Umm, Royals? I prefer my lobster in the shell.
I would love some pecan pie!
1:52 pm on September 16th, 2013
Mmm lobster. If I haven’t said so already. Also, just a few chapters from finishing Furry. Exciting doings here at our house, none of which have anything to do with vets, or vampires, or vampire vets. On October 1, our family is receiving the Spirit of Courage award from the sisters of St. Joseph…can’t figure why, but we got nominated and they thought it was a good idea…and a TV crew is coming in a little bit to shoot video. Alena is jazzed. Melanie, not so much. Me? Kind of exciting. I’m sure that Alena’s going to be the charmer she usually is. Leno, of course, is the consummate professional always, the cats will probably go into hiding, and Fiona will let us know when they get here. So all is right with our world.
2:04 pm on September 16th, 2013
Congratulations Buddy and Leno! Maybe the video will end up on the internet and we can see it.
2:53 pm on September 16th, 2013
Pecan pie coming up.
2:57 pm on September 16th, 2013
Award!…Buddy, this sounds like a big deal!…snort!
“The SSJ Spirit of Courage recognition honors individuals who have shown remarkable courage in recovery from an accident, injury, illness, addiction, economic adversity or who have shown courage in another way. The quiet, daily acts of ordinary people who refuse to give up in the face of illness, injury or other adversity represent courage in its truest form. Yet, all too often, these people struggle alone with no fanfare and little or no recognition for their courage. They are the heart of the SSJ Spirit of Courage.”
3:23 pm on September 16th, 2013
Woo Hoo and Howls for the whole Buddy, Leno and Support Team!
3:23 pm on September 16th, 2013
whoooohoooo, Buddy! Congratulations!
3:26 pm on September 16th, 2013
Buddy! We are very impressed. Wow! Please let us see the video if possible.
3:27 pm on September 16th, 2013
Thanks for finding that, Rio. The award is something special.
3:34 pm on September 16th, 2013
There has been a shooting at the Navy Yard in D.C. Twelve confirmed dead according to CNN.
3:37 pm on September 16th, 2013
OMG! How horrible. Do they know who the shooter is?
3:43 pm on September 16th, 2013
Rose, yes, They know who the shooter is. He was civilian contractor at the Naval Yard. He was 34 years old and originally from Ft. Worth, Texas.
No word yet on any motive. This is horrible.
3:56 pm on September 16th, 2013
Rose: His name was Aaron Alexis and was apparently a military contractor. It is unclear if he was the only shooter.
4:07 pm on September 16th, 2013
Thanks, Siber-H and HRH B. This is just terrible. I don’t understand what is going on with people anymore.
4:20 pm on September 16th, 2013
They have forgotten that I was in the waiting room for the scan. Then they thought they were giving me a different scan. Aaasasrtrtttghjk
4:30 pm on September 16th, 2013
This has got to stop! Now The Interloper Loulou is going shopping in MY pink bag.

4:31 pm on September 16th, 2013
The shooter is one of the 13 dead. I think there are 12-13 more injured. They are still looking for a possible 2nd shooter.
Buddy, that is a big honor. Hope we can learn more details later.
Barb’s brother is not going to make the signing on Thursday in Durham. Anyone know where Spence will be on Wednesday? We will order a book from one of those two book stores. When Barb went last year, dogs were allowed at that location.
4:38 pm on September 16th, 2013
Buddy and Leno: Whoo hoo! Congrats!
Princess: Yes, she is an interloper, but she’s just a baby and will grow up and you might even like her someday.
CHobbit: Package came from AK today š Table topper is even prettier in person! Mom can’t have a pretty quilty thing on the bed because of us (toe nails, dirt, teeth, fish pond) but on the table, that’s a horse of a different color! Mom thanks you and she likes the pin, too.
4:40 pm on September 16th, 2013
B&M: Wednesday is Books for Less in Alpharetta, GA. Just north of Hotlanta.
4:40 pm on September 16th, 2013
Princess Sam: oh dear.
Buddy & Leno: congrats
Melanie: why you? How could they forget you?
Rio: 2 weeks but still a light at the end of the tunnel.
P.S. I just now got water. Off to the dentist. My appt was Oct 10 but they had a cancellation.
4:48 pm on September 16th, 2013
Hobbit – very glad to hear it wasn’t the well running dry.
Buddy – respectful congratulations to all if you.
Princess Sam – sorry sweetie, you are just going to have to buck up and deal with it. Just wait til Jaqueline gets hold of her. Then you can have the last laugh.
Melanie – yup, we can believe it.
As to the shooting. sigh. Will humans never learn.
5:05 pm on September 16th, 2013
Sammie, we here on this blog know who the real Princess is.
You have the added distinction of being a Smoocher…LouLou does not. So, there!
6:01 pm on September 16th, 2013
Wow, Buddy and Leno, what an honor!
Princess Sammie, ever heard of the expression “kicked to the curb?” That little upstart is taking over your Aunt Molly’s Mom! She needs to remember that YOU are the princess!

Barb is friends with our next door neighbor, Jamie, who is my buddy Fred’s mom.
Her sister came over today and said they were going to go look at a Boxer pup for sale for $800. This girl does not have much money, so that is a ton for her. She has 3 kids and an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Barb said Boxers are great with kids and asked if it was brindle or fawn. She said white, and it was the last one left of the litter. When she got back with the darling puppy, who was shaking and not very responsive, Barb asked her what the mother looked like. She said, “Oh she doesn’t have the mother, she just helps friends out selling a puppy here and there”. She also had a couple of Lab pups and a 12 week old Sibe. Does anyone else see a huge red flag here?
She said he had his first shots and Barb aked if the gal said anything about having his hearing tested. Of course she said no. About 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 white boxer is deaf or partially deaf. Of course they can still make good pets, and can be trained with hand signals and a lot of patience, but this lady does not seem like the kind of person who has that much knowledge. We hope the puppy is OK.
Any time some one is offering more than one kind of puppy for sale, and is not doing any kind of puppy questionare with the potential owners, one should walk away.
6:20 pm on September 16th, 2013
Barb, BIG RED FLAG
6:20 pm on September 16th, 2013
Oh, and Barb asked her if she considered rescue and she said yes but she wanted her kids to have the experience of a puppy. Guess what, there are puppies in rescue too!

Best signing ever!!! Hello from the Seattle Mystery Bookshop!

6:55 pm on September 16th, 2013
Masquers, Yippie!!!
I was thinking of you today at the signing.
7:14 pm on September 16th, 2013
Hi Siber! Spence says hi to everyone on the Blog…especially to Riƶ…who missed the signing at the Tattered Cover in Denver. He says it was almost canceled due to inclement weather (to say the least!)
7:27 pm on September 16th, 2013
Masquers and Spence look great!
Get ready because I am about to RANT. I have now gotten home and eaten.
I have left the following on the hospital’s Facebookie site.
7:28 pm on September 16th, 2013
Dear Bay State Hospital, I had one of the worst experiences today with any hospital that I have been in for a CT Scan.
First: The people in Radiology forgot I was there. I had to ask at the desk what was going on, and THEY HAD FORGOTTEN ME.
Second: There was a miscommunication on what scan I was supposed to have. No one explained to me what was going on.
Third: It was over any hour before I was given my IV.
Fourth: The tech was going to my IV insertion WITHOUT GLOVES. I have HCV. Even if I didn’t the BLOOD BARRIER SHOULD NOT BE BROKEN. I don’t need anything else wandering around my system from someone else.
Fifth: After the 10 minute CT scan ANOTHER tech started taking out my IV without gloves.
Besides being sloppy work, this is endangering people. I am disappointed.

Never, Riƶ! I swear he mentioned you by name!
7:35 pm on September 16th, 2013
Melanie!…You should be mad!…grump!…Good grief! This is one reason my friend never goes to the doctor unless she absolutely has to…sniff!…Those medical people get worse every year.
7:35 pm on September 16th, 2013
Excellent picture Masquers.
Can you change hospitals Melanie?
7:36 pm on September 16th, 2013

RIO! Heh!
7:43 pm on September 16th, 2013
Tall!…Masker’s Maw is more Elfin-size!…snort!…Actually, she sort of reminds me of one of those Tolkien Elves….wheeze!
7:50 pm on September 16th, 2013
Sammie!…That Sammie-Wanna-Be has crossed the line now…grunt!…I would not stand for that shopping bag behavior if it was me missy!…sneeze!…I’d send Beau over to Ruff her up, but he has puppy-luv for that LuLu…groan!
7:59 pm on September 16th, 2013
B.Stover, part of the trouble of living where we do is the problem of the hospitals. The one that is closest has gone downhill – like a Corgi sliding on ice – since they have been bought by a larger hospital.
The hospital where I was is further down the road. That is the hospital where my Liver Doc has privileges. Stuck with that one.
The other way down the hills is teaching hospital. They love to give out narcotics.
sigh
I did take C.Hobbit’s advice and wrote to the State Public Health department and CC (why do they still say CC?) my doctor.
Considering just going to my dogs’ vet.
Thanks Riƶ, Zoƫ and I feel the same way.
8:01 pm on September 16th, 2013
Masquers! Your mom is so pretty, and that is a wonderful picture. We here agree with Rio that she looks like one of the beautiful forest elves from The Hobbit and LOTR.

There is a Downton Abby special on tonight, which must mean the new season is starting soon. Does anyone know when it starts?
8:19 pm on September 16th, 2013
Melanie: Glad to see you are cooling down, your humor is returning. We think you were more than patient while someone “practiced” medicine today.
Masquers: Great picture! So glad to see OFA has had the lump removed from his head. He looks much better without it š
Mom asked the people at the Alpharetta, GA store about bringing a dog. They said absolutely not! She explained the books, blog etc. to no avail. GRUMP š

Rio. That’s okay, beans can be spilled. Teddy asked me to say that he is very, very excited that he is going to meet his very special and bestest friend Rose and the Professor too on our way up to Vermont the weekend after next. Yippee!!! (Mom and dad will be in tow too, since they will be driving, as Teddy is still too young to drive the Teddymobile by himself.)

Rose! We are so excited for you and for Wookie’s mom and dad and for Teddy! Woo Hoo! That is not the Plunderer meeting we thought you meant. We were thinking maybe you were planning to join Melanie (and others?) at Spencer’s signing in Albany. Mom even thought about that, but it is such a long drive, and Dima wants her home.
8:55 am on September 17th, 2013
Good Morning, Howlers: Albany sounds like fun, but I am real excited to meet Teddy and his mom and dad! Madison, CT would probably be closer, but I have to go to the busy-place the next day. I’m thinking of calling RJ Julia and requesting a signed copy.
9:42 am on September 17th, 2013
Morning all. Teddy’s folks are going to get lots of passport stamps on their grand tour. We will be meeting them in Vermont. Along with Melanie.
Woo hooo.
If only Rio’s friend HAD taken that bus trip….
11:23 am on September 17th, 2013
Thanks, y’all š
Melanie, I don’t know what it is about hospitals. It’s because of one of our local hospitals that Alena now has a plate from behind her right eye socket to the back of her head, after they totally missed the boat on a serious infection after brain surgery. And, even though Presbyterian and Pittsburgh Children’s (both in Pittsburgh, both of which our family has spent way too muh time in) are excellent, they can also use some help. Your case, though, sounds way over the top, and I sure don’t blame you for being angry.
FWIW, Chet (the other one, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned) didn’t like hospitals. He was a very sensitive dog, and I think his dislike of hospitals led to his somewhat earlier retirement, well, earlier than I would have liked, but you really do want them to go on for a hundred years…even though Chet really was a handful. They talk about working dogs, Chet was a lot of work. We sure miss him though.
On the off chance people want to see more about our family, our local paper did an article about us back in 2007. Unfortunately, the second adoption didn’t work out (expiring paperwork, and then Melanie’s health got worse), and other stuff. This article was written before Alena’s brain surgery and infection and trip to Disneyworld. Hopefully, the hour and a half worth of video distilled to a two-minute news story will show soon as well.
Not sure if links are allowed or not, but if they are, here’s the older news story:

I am online on the internet over 3 working hours these days, yet I personally hardly ever uncovered just about any appealing document similar to your own. It is really rather selling price ample in my situation. For me, in case almost all online marketers and blog writers designed outstanding information as you most likely do, the online world could be far more useful than in the past.
