Yesterday
“How was the event in Osterville?” Admin says.
“No one threw anything,” Spence says. “Except for me, of course. I asked a quiz question and the winner got a frisbee.”
“You winged it at her?”
“More like handing.”
“What was the question?”
“If I tell you I won’t be able to use it again.”

Good morning. We have no eggs. 🙁
Did Spence get more blocks at Osterville?
And, who is Martha? Maybe we just need caffeine. That is mighty popular in our house this morning.
Pop had to go to work in the middle of the night. When he got home at 6:00, there was no room in the Big Bed for him. heh heh
8:14 am on November 18th, 2012
Hey! Those are the cool blocks Gus&BooBear’s mom gave to Spence.
Wonder how their dad is doing.
O.Howlers: Sorry about the egg situation. No time to be without…after all it is Egg Day.
Martha? Need cawfee here too.
8:30 am on November 18th, 2012
Bear, what are you doing up so early? Isn’t it only 5:30 am out your way? No wonder you go to bed so early!
8:31 am on November 18th, 2012
Good Morning all! Martha is the Raven’s other daughter, or Zoë’s youngest daughter of my sister. I did tell her during my birthday this year that she was now the older daughter. I was tired of it. snicker.
Yes, the three of us are going down to the short shiny show. No pots. 🙁
First we need to get either Grace or Katy to the groomer. I’m not sure which one. I just know it isn’t me.
8:33 am on November 18th, 2012
Jeeze Louise. That one “of” sounds like we have a very strange family tree. Hmmm try “or”.
BearSpiritDog, hope you are feeling better and the wind doesn’t blow you away.
8:36 am on November 18th, 2012
Good morning, Melanie. Enjoy the show and time with Zoe and your sister Martha!
Bear, can you see the sound from where you live? There is a bridge to your island, right? Are you close to the bridge? Your island looks so amazing to us, we want to know more about it.
9:19 am on November 18th, 2012
Egg Day – NOT! My dysfunctional family gave me dry kibble.
9:23 am on November 18th, 2012
Good morning all. We were going to jump in there and say that Martha was Melanie’s sis, but she said it first.
We heard that the west coast could get 70-90 mph winds. Yikes! BSD, is that happening where you are?
Glad no one threw anything at Spence.
Gus did some whinning around 5:00 a.m. but Barb ignored him. Guess what was waiting for her in the den? Well at least it was an easy clean up.
9:41 am on November 18th, 2012
O.Howlers: In answer to your Island question…I could see the Sound (forest) if not for the trees. We live near the southern tip which means it takes almost 25 minutes to reach the bridge and the mainland…then another hour to Seattle. Whereas a ferry ride would drop passengers off downtown in a third the time. Unfortunately our island does not have ferry service.
Barb&Magpie: So far nothing like that here. WeatherKat said BREEZY for the next couple of days, but what does he know. He’s off on some jazz gig and neglected to update this very important report before leaving.
9:46 am on November 18th, 2012
MagPie, When a Newf’s gotta go, a Newf’s gotta go. It is why we have a dog door into the stockade.
Well, it’s going to be Martha and me. Zoë woke up unwell. She did have 3 good days this week. That is more than it has been in quite awhile.
BearSpiritDog, I know Masquers is a Kat of many talents. Can he drive a boat?
9:48 am on November 18th, 2012
What happens when a Spirit Dog gets really sick? Does he cross Back over the bridge? Uhhh, to early for this much thought. Best of luck to the Shiny Show People.
* Macy pulling blanket back over her head*
9:49 am on November 18th, 2012
I’d like to know what the quiz question was. I’m also wondering if the new title has been selected yet.
Good morning all.
10:03 am on November 18th, 2012
O.Howlers: In answer to your Island question…I could see the Sound (forest) if it wasn’t for the trees. We live near the southern tip which means it takes almost 25 minutes to reach the bridge (not THAT Bridge) and the mainland…then another hour to Seattle. Whereas a ferry ride would drop passengers off downtown in a third the time, unfortunately our island does not have that luxury.
Barb&Magpie: So far nothing like that here. WeatherKat said BREEZY for the next couple of days, but what does he know. Off on some jazz gig he neglected to update this very important report before leaving.
Protection on the west by Whidbey Island usually spares us the brunt of the storm.
Melanie: Heh. Not only can he drive a boat, but flies a helicopter too.
Have a good time out with Martha. Hope Zoe feels better soon.
Macy: Spirit dogs cannot get sick, but their humans can and we cannot help but feel simpatico.
10:08 am on November 18th, 2012
What’s this…a half Dawson? How did that happen?
10:09 am on November 18th, 2012
Bear, thanks for clearing that up. I am looking at your map and it looks to me like there is a person between the two islands. Cool!
10:10 am on November 18th, 2012
Macy: You are right!
10:32 am on November 18th, 2012
Happy one month birthday to the Great Dane therapy puppies! Goodness, they’re my size already. They will become balance therapy dogs for wounded warriors, MS patients and people with ataxia.
10:41 am on November 18th, 2012
Good morning, everyone! We are happy to have Mom and Dad home where they belong. Dad isn’t feeling tip top yet, probably won’t during this month of radiation and treatments. He doesn’t have to take the chemo pill or radiation on the weekends so last night he didn’t take his anti nausea pill either. This morning he is feeling pretty yukky and Mom thinks this is why. This is quite a learning experience.
Mom is going to get her pictures taken and sent to Melanie today. Hopefully, Rebecca will be able to fit them on the boutique shelf somewhere. She will also be sending Dawson info on checkpoint sponsorship. It sounds like they are going great. Are we going to sponsor some of the dogs this year too? We felt sorry for the dogs that didn’t get to wear the Chet the Dog patch last year!
11:26 am on November 18th, 2012
Gus&BooBear: Sorry to hear your dad didn’t have a good night. You are right it is a learning experience…only thing is…by the time he gets the hang of it he won’t have to do it anymore. Thank Dog for that!
Rio mentioned the other day regretting we printed the year on the patches, etc. It is a regret we all share.
Hmmm…pondering…couldn’t we simply change the 2 into a 3?
11:30 am on November 18th, 2012
Good Morning All!
T&G, Good luck at the super shiny shew!
Bear: I really like the map, and Macy is right. There is a person in there!
Please stay safe!
Sammie and Oleys, sorry about the dry kibble. 🙁
G&BB: Sorry to hear your pop isn’t feeling tip-top today. Tuck him under the quilt.
Oh, Sammie, it means a lot that you and MPM contributed toward our checkpoint.
11:32 am on November 18th, 2012
hmmm, yes we have forgotten about sponsoring a dog or three. I wonder if Rio Jr. will be racing this year? Maybe not in the Iditarod.
The ‘rents both had eggs and bacon this morning. Staff had oatmeal. She is such a goody two-shows. (I almost used the wrong word there)
11:40 am on November 18th, 2012
I completely forgot…..Siber-H and Rio…that is a great picture of youse guys!
G&BB, I love the blocks your mom gave to Spence. It put a smile on my face!
11:40 am on November 18th, 2012
Sponsors!…I think our lofty goal should be to sponsor all the checkpoints, all the dawgs, feed the Giant and Shake our 2000 booties till we drop!…heh!heh!
12:10 pm on November 18th, 2012
Thank you, Rose. We love the photo.
How much is it to sponsor a dog?
12:21 pm on November 18th, 2012
Spence: You could try the question on us Plunderers.
I have no eggs either – on egg day.
12:26 pm on November 18th, 2012
Siber-H & Rio: Wose is wright. The photo of you two pals is Great.
Rebecca will correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the amount to sponsor a dog is $500.
Wose: Is it true Denzel Washington gives an Oscar worthy performance in Flight…or is that media hype?

🙂 Checkpoint Update 🙂
Alice M.Johnson has decided that there is something wrong…something missing this Iditarod. What is missing? Cats!
She has provided the start-up funds for a Cat checkpoint to be started yesterday! Didn’t get time yesterday, Alice, but The Cats of Chet Checkpoint is now open for donations.
Horses too! A checkpoint has been started in special honor of our own Shiek & friends. Hope Shiek is feeling tip-top. This checkpoint is open for donations.
I will do a quick update on the other still open for donations checkpoints:
The 2 legged memorial checkpoint, Yentna, has earned $180.;
The 4 legged Rainbow Bridge checkpoint, Skwentna, has earned $160.;
The retiree checkpoint, Safety, has earned $85.; and
Rose and the Professor’s Anchorage checkpoint has earned $120.
Business is brisk at Checkpoint Central!
Go Snowhook!
12:46 pm on November 18th, 2012
My near vision is still blurry which makes reading/typing difficult. When LASIK is redone, there is no guarantee of improvement but we will see what happens in the days ahead. With mono vision, one eye is used for near vision and one for far vision. It was my near vision that had to be redone. It will be a bummer if I have to go back to wearing glasses. Usually in the winter I do a lot of embroidery and reading (duh) so I need to be able to see close up.
May I add items to the Holiday Boutique late? I won’t be home until the 24th so will miss the deadline. I think I can get my one auction item photo taken in time.
I have put dibs on the Willow checkpoint and will contribute to the bootie fund when I get home.
Take care everyone!
1:24 pm on November 18th, 2012
CHobbit!…You are excused from reading every word…snort!
Sunday!…Is flying by…grunt!…Someone has to run to the liquor store and get some wine for Thanksgiving. I wonder what kind she will get….sniff!
1:37 pm on November 18th, 2012
CHobbitHarris: Here’s hoping you get to throw away the glasses.
2:03 pm on November 18th, 2012
🙂 Important Announcement! 🙂
A checkpoint has been sponsored outright by Gus & BooBear in honor of their Dad kicking cancer to the curb! That’s right – take that! and that and that! And don’t come back again if you know what’s good for you!
Gus and BooBear’s Dad is not 100 percent yet but he is home in the healing arms and paws of his family and friends and has the power of the Plunderers behind him.
Hey! They gave to the Chet’s Cats! checkpoint as well! Thanks Gus and BooBear!
2:19 pm on November 18th, 2012
Hurray for G&BB!
And BSD, thanks for posting the map and letting us know where youse live on that there island. In our opinions, the longer it takes for youse to get to the mainland, and more importantly, for the mainlanders to get to youse, the better. Although, having a ferry boat sounds like fun. The rents went out for a really Big Breakfast. And brought home nada for us. Then they went to Wyebrook Farm, a restored beautiful farm who is into sustainable agriculture and raises pigs like the kind at Caw Caw, as well as beef and good produce. They got a shoulder roast (known as a Boston Butt!) and some shrooms, lettuce, and BEEF JERKY!!! We just know some of that is for us!
Shiek is so cranked about the horses’ checkpoint. He wants us to give all our money toward that one, but Mom said Whoah Big Guy…we have to save up some more $$$ first.
2:37 pm on November 18th, 2012
The Shiny Shew was much bigger than expected. I had to use the phone to call Golinka and ask where they were!
Grace looks amazing (snicker), and was “good” at the groomer. She does not approve of the dryer on her head so she is going with the wet look.
Zoë still feels awful. I will be cooking dinner and trying to figure out how to get everything done this week. I believe the answer will be “Don’t worry about it. It will get done sometime.”
2:42 pm on November 18th, 2012
Gus&BooBear: WOW is all I can say to that. Good for youse.
Rebecca is going to be busy naming checkpoints!
Shiek: As soon as we shake out the couch cushions some money will be sent to Snowhook for you and your friends.
2:44 pm on November 18th, 2012
A shoulder roast is a Boston butt?
Does that mean that the people of Boston walk around with their a s s on their shoulders? ( Dad tells us that is a military expression – as in a young officer who is very self impressed. Yup, sounds like a lot of Bostonians we have met)
2:52 pm on November 18th, 2012
The woman at the pig farm explained that the reason shoulder roasts are called Boston Butts had to with them being shipped to Boston way back when, in a container known as a butt. We just looked it up and lo and behold:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_butt
3:02 pm on November 18th, 2012
I asked Zoë (who used to live in Boston) if she had ever heard of “Boston Butt”, her answer was akin to T & G’s. Though Royals’ I wonder if the Bostonians knew that the cut of meat wasn’t the best!
Here he is . . OTAS . . also known as
The Kat Whisperer
3:03 pm on November 18th, 2012
OMD, a comma was supposed to be there, not an apostrophe.
I’m going to rest now.
Obviously, I need it.
3:07 pm on November 18th, 2012
That is funny! ” Their a s s on their shoulders” is very descriptive! I like it.
3:11 pm on November 18th, 2012
So Dawson, you do not need any more $$ for G&B’s Kick Cancer checkpoint?
3:34 pm on November 18th, 2012
Barb & Maggie: That is correct. Gus&BooBear were so impressed at the way their Dad and the doctors handled the cancer and so happy to all be together at home that they sponsored a checkpoint! WhoooHoooo! AJ and the doggies love it!
4:21 pm on November 18th, 2012
Wow!…I doze off for a couple hours and checkpoints are magically sponsored….whooooooo!….This is awesome Dawson!….snort!…You are officially in charge of checkpoints every year from now on!..heh!heh!..WOOOOOOOO!
4:26 pm on November 18th, 2012
Dawson!…Check your SDD – ASAP or even quicker!…snort!
4:37 pm on November 18th, 2012
Dawson!….Check it again…heh!
5:03 pm on November 18th, 2012
Bear: Denzel Washington was very good in the movie. I think he will be nominated for an Oscar. I think Ben Affleck might be nominated as well, in the Actor category, and in the Director’s category.
G&BB: whoooooohoooooo!
Melanie: Love the picture of the Kat Whisperer!
To those Plunderers who have contributed to the Anchorage, the Prof and I are very humbled. Thank you all!
5:28 pm on November 18th, 2012
Oh no – no lifetime positions, besides, it’s not me, it’s you Plunderers!
The first day the checkpoints opened there were quite a few donations. I thought it would slow down after a couple days but each day more trickled in, big and small – we liked them all and some days they streamed like a waterfall! (apologies to BStover) We have more than half the checkpoints fully funded (16!) and 6 in process of being funded. Every one is shaking out the couch cushions for the 3rd and 4th time. Can’t wait to see what’s in the Store and Auction.
Melanie: OTAS and his cats are comfortable – and so good looking.
5:40 pm on November 18th, 2012
Home!…We are done with our long walk…wheeze!…and are settling down to watch the rest of the Broncos football game…grunt!…Beau likes football. Its a game he can understand…heh!heh!
5:45 pm on November 18th, 2012
Ahem…I spent some time thinking about appropirate checkpoints and consulted AJ as well. When asked which checkpoint would best for a horse, he suggested Takotna. He said he hasn’t seen any other horses there. Takotna is known for it’s pies and hospitality. Yum!
Shaktoolik has been selected for the Kats! Last year, AJ had a band of rogue pups steel his bootie bag. He spent time chasing and playing with the pups before leaving. This seems like a scene the dignified—far too dignified for such tomfoolery—kats would enjoy watching.
AJ and I have selected White Mountain for Gus and BooBear’s dad and kick, kick, kicking cancer. This checkpoint is 77 miles from the finish line. Mushers are required to take a mandatory 8 hour checkpoint in White Mountain. It has been a long run to this point, not always easy, but the end and relief is near—this seems a lot like the journey G&BB’s dad is taking. It takes strength to make either journey. I hope this is an appropriate checkpoint to honor G&BB’s dad and his strength and fortitude.
AJ and I decided the best way to honor Chet for bringing the Plunderers together is to select…wait for it…Nome! I know you were with me in spirit last year as I waited in Nome for AJ and the team to cross the finish line. I have often said that anyone should be so lucky to have a cheering section like Snowhook and Chet made that possible. To Chet! To Bernie! To Spence!
5:47 pm on November 18th, 2012
Couch cushions! We need to save some coins for the Holiday Boutique and upcoming Auction!
Thank you, Dawson: Your hard work is very much appreciated.
5:49 pm on November 18th, 2012
Very good choices, Rebecca!
5:52 pm on November 18th, 2012
SnowBella: What Great choices! We can see you and AJ put a lot of thought into choosing the appropriate checkpoint for each name.
5:54 pm on November 18th, 2012
Checkpoints!…I like all the checkpoints so far…sneeze!…All named very appropriately – all have meaning..sniffle!honk!
5:57 pm on November 18th, 2012
Rio: I told AJ you assured me the two of you will have the Koyuk checkpoint under control. He said it makes sense to him. Besides, how much trouble can a pug and a Giant get into on the trail?
5:59 pm on November 18th, 2012
Trouble!…heh!snort!heh!…Time will tail Rebecca, time will tail…snorkel!
6:05 pm on November 18th, 2012
Chet the Jet takes Nome!
I love all Rebecca and AJ’s choices for checkpoints!
6:09 pm on November 18th, 2012
Thank you, Rebecca and AJ. That sounds like the perfect checkpoint for Dad.
6:10 pm on November 18th, 2012
Dawson!…Will you please check your SDD?…yeesh!sniff!
6:12 pm on November 18th, 2012
Year!…My friend is wondering if she can somehow change the year on one of your Chet the Dog Iditarod patches…sniff!…Seems daunting.
6:18 pm on November 18th, 2012
Fight!…Beau loves it when players from opposing teams get into a dawg-fight..grunt!…San Diego is frustrated because they are losing to our team…heh!heh!…They’ve got 2 full quarters to rectify the situation….(right!)
6:18 pm on November 18th, 2012
Dawson, please check your SDD when able.
I am loving all the checkpoint dedications! They all have great meaning.
CHH : Hope you are tip top soon. Take care of yourself.
6:18 pm on November 18th, 2012
The checkpoints are all named appropriately. Thanks Rebecca and all the Plunderers! plunderers Rock, and YES! Chet the Jet takes NOME!
6:19 pm on November 18th, 2012
Great work Dawson, and great choices Bella.
And great heart, soul, spirit and checkbooks, you dear PlunderPack, one and all.
The Short Shiny Show is now history. We came, we set up, we showed, we broke down, we went home.
And now we are heating up a cassarole for dinner, and heading for bed. These early mornings are not our most favorite things. Lets just say that if we were birds, those early worms would be partying out on the lawn with no fear.
6:20 pm on November 18th, 2012
Rio: Making a two into a three…easy peasy…Easy for me to say. I’m not the one doing it. Heh.
6:24 pm on November 18th, 2012
Gus & BooBear, please check your SDD.
(That’s very true about the Royals’ mum. I always make sure it’s well after 10 before I call her. Unless she’s been on the blog then I figure she’s up and catching those late worms.)
Zoë and I will be having an extended Thanksgiving. OTAS and GLAD are coming up on Wednesday and leaving Friday. We have no idea when YSAS is coming this way. He’s working on Wednesday and all the trains have been sold out for that day. The family dinner is going to be held at my sister’s house on Saturday. Yoo Hoo! Lots of partying.
6:28 pm on November 18th, 2012
Attention Plunderers!
Everyone should have received their boutique pictures back. If you haven’t gotten yours please yell loudly. Then send me an email.
Also Plunderers!
Youse guys . . (wiping tear from eye) . . Youse guys are just the sweetest things . . (sniffling) . . . Youse guys . .
6:34 pm on November 18th, 2012
Melanie!…Snap out of it!…snort!
6:48 pm on November 18th, 2012
I love love love the choice of White Mountain for Gus and BooBears Dad (and Mom). They will conquer it and go on to the finish. We have great faith in the Power of the Plunderers. And what else besides Nome would be for Chet? We agree.
Shaktoolik is a funny name. I have to think before I say it and I think all the kats will enjoy that checkpoint. Will AJ be going by the old woman cabin this year or is that only on the Northern route? I would like to see the Plunder On again.
hint..
7:19 pm on November 18th, 2012
On a paw that is not only the other, but on another dog . .
Found out that one of the things “The Powers That Be” said I had to take for the liver stuff can cause changes in my mitochondria. Great . . Just what I need to be a mutant of myself.
Snicker . . My guys will never let me live this one down.
Sure am glad I’ve never let them experiment on me again!
7:27 pm on November 18th, 2012
AliceM: AJ will pass by Old Woman cabin this year after passing by the old Old Woman Cabin. He said he is happy to send another picture of Plunder On! If the witch from old Old Woman cabin erased it from last year, he will have to write it again on the guest book.
7:31 pm on November 18th, 2012
Mitochodria!…Is Melanie okay?…sniff!
7:33 pm on November 18th, 2012
Game!…I was going to look up Mitochondria but it is the 4th quarter with only 2 minutes left…wheeze!

Time for an early supper and the Ken Burns PBS Special: The Dust Bowl.
WBBT (will be back tomorrow) – Bear
7:47 pm on November 18th, 2012
Riö, no worries. This happened over a decade ago, but it does explain my exhaustion. Mitochondria, to keep a very long explanation short, is the stuff that makes energy for cells. If they get overwhelmed or if they get mutated there is cell exhaustion.
Your mitochondria in your cells is usually inherited from your mother, from her mother, from her mother, from her mother. Which I think is a totally cool thing.
So this isn’t a new thing for me, the scientists are just figuring it out.
7:49 pm on November 18th, 2012
It’s time for bed. I am up and out of here by 7:20 am.
Why did I make that appointment for such an early time?
Will I never learn?
It’s my mutant Mitochondria!
7:51 pm on November 18th, 2012
Melanie!…Thank dawg! I was worried about you there right at the end of the football game…wheeze!
Broncos!…Win yet another game!….Wooooo!….They are 3 games ahead…snorkel!…Beau is ecstatic!…heh!

Coincidense!…We watched a lovely movie yesterday afternoon called, “Ladies In Lavender”…sniff!…In it there was a young actor whom we’ve never seen before…grunt!…Now tonight we are watching “The Bourne Supremecy” and low and behold, there is the young actor that was in the other movie…heh!heh!…We have no idea what his name is…grunt!
8:15 pm on November 18th, 2012

Go Broncos!
8:24 pm on November 18th, 2012
Bourne!…We are sort of lost when it comes to Jason Bourne…sniff!…I don’t know whats going on actually. The young unknown actor was someone Jason had to tell his sister was dead. Now this might be the gal he hung out with the last time we watched a Bourne movie – not sure…grunt!
8:34 pm on November 18th, 2012
Ya snooze, ya lose!

I made some cranberry, apricot, cherry and walnut chutney. The recipe said to put in 1/4 t. of almond flavoring and I am not liking that flavor with the tartness. It seems wrong. I really like cranberry sauce though, so therefore I will have lots. Just a little until Thursday though.
