Ides Of March Edition: Wookie’s Checkpoint, Coming Up!

“Looks like AJ’s on his way to Elim,” says Spence. “Which is Wookie’s checkpoint. Go Snowhook! We’re talking about the Iditarod, for anyone new here, this great race where we’re very emotionally involved with the Snowhook team.”

“What’s our checkpoint, again?”

“Golovin, I think,” Spence says.

“Sounds Russian,” Admin says.

“I don’t think they go that far.”

“But have they been through Golovin yet?”

“Not sure. How about we give Rebecca a call today? She’s in Nome.”

“Why not?”

Welcome Smiley LaBrador and Bazalgette.

    On the Trail again,
They couldn’t wait to get on the trail again.
The one they love is now waiting for them in Nome.

And they can’t wait to get on the trail again.
    On the trail again

They’ve been places that are windy, bleak and wild
Now it time to wing their way through checkpoints on to Nome.

Hi Barb! Don’t let your CL get you down! Maybe next year, we can get AJ to pack her up in the sled and drop her off somewhere along the trail…tee hee

We have such respect for AJ. He has been faced with one difficulty after another, and he takes it all in stride. Since he still has 12 dogs, it is obvious that he is taking exceptional care of them and is more concerned with their well being than with pushing them.
We truly hope that AJ will know that we all think more highly of him for his integrity than if he was a different kind of person who sacrificed the dogs for the win.

Go Snowhook! We are waiting for you to come home, and we will wait no matter how long it takes!

A fun and relaxing day to you and Patsy!

AJ. What more can we say about this Giant of a Man?
Love, Faith, Courage, Confidence, Dedication, Perseverance, Integrity, Compassion, Kindness, Honesty. All of these describe Rebecca’s man.
Our respect for him grows by the day. The Plunderers are honored to call him Friend.

This is from a post from the ITC facebookie page…we concur.

BUT……………. will the insider be posting all finishing of all drivers??? Family friends and fans have spent hours, weeks, years and many dollars supporting mushers…we understand the media coud care less about # 20 or #50 but those of us who have paid with elbow grease and dreamed with these drivers DO CARE and want to see them finish. I don’t want to be cheaped out seeing my supported musher finish because they are not in the top 10 yet or maybe never.

Not to disappoint my good pal Rio, and as AJ and the team are rolling into Elim, how about a little chorus from Credence Clearwater Revival. Yahoooo! Go Snowhook. Wookie

Left a good job in the city
Working for the man every night and day
And I never lost one minute of sleeping
Worrying ’bout the way things might have been

    Big wheel, keep on turning
    Proud Mary, keep on burning
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river

Cleaned a lot of plates in Memphis
Pumped a lot of pain down in New Orleans
But I never saw the good side of the city
Until I hitched a ride on a river boat queen
    Big wheel, keep on turning
    Proud Mary, keep on burning
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river

Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river
If you come down to the river
Bet you gonna find some people who live
You don’t have to worry ’cause you have no money
People on the river are happy to give

    Big wheel, keep on turning
    Proud Mary, keep on burning
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river

Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river
Rolling, rolling, rolling on the river

We have found that the easiest way to make sure you are using the right pronoun is to take the double subject/object out and just use the pronoun. “Please give it to Bob and I” does not sound right if you say “Please give it to I”.

  50. BearSpiritDog
    12:35 pm on March 15th, 2012

Barb&Magpie: Now you’re talk’n. Even Bear can remember that! “Please give it to Bob and I” sounded good until we did what you said.

Barb and Maggie, we do not get HBO and we never heard of Luck. What happened? Or don’t we want to know?

Bee, Mom says she loves that too. She has happy memories of diagramming sentences on the blackboards. She is ancient! Our pet peeve is not people using me as subjectivs, but rather people using “I” when they shouldn’t. Mom sees that all the time in business correspondence, believe it or not.

We also love Fogarty and CCR, and we also love Zepplin!

We are happy Rebecca can’t get online to see AJ running with the twins (wink).

Oley, We don’t get HBO either, and have not seen the show. Just read in the news today that they have stopped filming after the 3rd horse had to be put down. Evidently she reared up and went over backwards injuring herself. Other two were injured during filming of the first season and had to be put down. PETA stepped in. They thought proper care was not being taken, plus they were using race horses for the filming that were old and out of shape. I think Nick Nolte and Dustin Hoffman were in it.

  70. B.Stover

No, truly. Venn Diagrams are fun. I learned about them in logic class as an undergrad and for fun I did Venn Ds for all the syllogisms. Wonder if I can find that notebook. It’s relaxing like doing jigsaw puzzles is relaxing.

  81. B.Stover
    2:36 pm on March 15th, 2012

Mollypop’s Mom: I’ve heard that too. It’s almost like nails scratching a chalkboard.

Barb: I wonder how that person got hired.

For a long time my theory has been that people don’t read enough when they’re young. Reading is one of the best ways to learn usage. (I’ve never been good at math but I think math takes a certain talent.)

  82. OleyHowlers
    3:04 pm on March 15th, 2012

Our theory is that teachers focused on improper usage of “me” as in “Dima and me are going to kill that groundhog.” Because of those lessons, we now find that many adults are afraid to use “me” so they say “the groundhog tasted good to Dima and I” or “please give Dima and myself some ice cream so we don’t have to kill yet another groundhog.”

Mmm I doubt that the groundhog is laughing too much!

Why did no one tell us that “Winterdance” was required reading? We had to tear ourselves away to check on the current race instead of one from 25 years ago. So exciting in both cases.

Grandma told mom all through elementary school, “just wait until you have to diagram sentences”. Mom waited as told, but never had to. Could be why we go zzzzzzzzzz when thinking about subjected particules and objecting claws.

Mackey has lost our respect during this race.
We know what a REAL musher thinks about!

Bee – we admit it. We had to look up what Venn diagrams of categorical syllogisms were. We decided that:
    Some brain games are fun
We do not like brain games that are not fun
Therefore we do not like all brain games

And we still don’t know what the heck categorical syllogisms are!

    We will stick with Sudoku

To me, Sudoku is extremely difficult.

In a valid categorical syllogism the conclusion is inferred from the premises. Venn Diagrams test the validity of the argument. I can’t show it here because I can’t draw the three circles on the blog.

OH: (whispering)You’d better stop with your groundhog examples! Mom (the groundhog baby) gets very upset with talk of killing groundhogs. She collects groundhog stuff, and one of the things Dad got her was a groundhog cookbook. Since she’s a big fan of the furry critters, she fails to see the humor!

FOR RIO’S EYES ONLY! Did you see that UNC-Asheville (No. 16 seed) almost knocked off Syracuse (No. 1 seed) in the first round of the NCAA tournament? Dad says they was robbed! He said UNC-Asheville — and we were rooting for them because they’re the Bulldogs (instead of the stupid Orangemen) — had the game up until the last couple of minutes, when the refs started making some questionable calls. Even the announcers were saying the calls were bad! A No. 16 has never knocked off a No. 1 in the history of the tournament, and Dad wonders if the refs were protecting Syracuse!!!

    Dear Plunderers,
We are not usually good goats, but we try.
We called the Iditarod auction people and bought a raffle ticket.
But we put Rebecca and AJ’s name on it.
Maybe they will win a truck.
    Tickets are $100.
This is why we were “borrowing” packages; to earn enough money to buy a ticket.
    Signed,

Bee: It’s a community cookbook from Punxsutawney, PA (home of Punxsutawney Phil, of course), called “Cooking with the Groundhog.” While most of the recipes are run-of-the-mill casseroles, side dishes and desserts, some of them actually call for groundhog meat. Mom has the book on display with the rest of her collection, but has refused to try any of the recipes!

Creator – we thank you for this day of joy. We thank you for hearing our prayers, and watching over our family. We thank you for guidance and wisdom and patience and fortitude. We thank you for all your wonders of this earth.

Creator – today is a day of celebration and anticipation. Our hearts are light as our friend AJ and his team near the end of their journey. We are so grateful for your sheltering hands that have protected our friend.

We ask you to continue to be with AJ and the team over these last miles. Let their hearts feel our joy, and their own. Let them feel satisfaction in their accomplishment, and know the pride we feel for them.

Creator – these last miles may feel so long. Bodies tire. Minds grow weary. Hearts are yearing for the one they love. We ask you to let our joy carry AJ and the team over those last miles. Let our love for them make their burden light, and their miles short.

We ask you to make these hours pass quickly for Rebecca as she waits for the first sight of her family over the horizon. We ask you to let our companionship surround Rebecca and hold her close so that she does not wait alone.

Creator – you have given us such a marvelous gift in bringing us together for this amazing time. Each one of us has found new strength, new hope and new reasons for joy during this year that we banded together to support Snowhook. Friendships have been made stronger. Compassion for each other has grown even deeper. There has been learning and sharing and laughter and inspiration. We have held each other up during times of sadness, we have celebrated each others’ joys and victories. We have become a family, if not of blood, then of choice.

Creator – we thank you for this family. Like all family gatherings, there is wisdom, questions, teaching, jokes and disagreements. There are some who are always present, and some who can only stop in now and then. And there are some who may look through the windows to enjoy the times together, but are not ready to step through the door yet. We thank you for each and every one of these family members for it is all of our combined spirits that make this family strong.

Creator – we ask you to watch over this family, now and forever.

Creator – we thank you for this day of joy. We thank you for hearing our prayers, and watching over AJ, Rebecca and the team.. We thank you for guidance and wisdom and patience and fortitude. We thank you for bringing our family together to enjoy the wonders of this earth.

    Amen

    Amen. Thank you.

I’ve found kindness in Nome. I met someone at the airport to split the cost of lodging with me for last night and tonight, the cost of our breakfast was paid by the guys who sang karaoke last night and kept us awake until the wee hours of the morning, and a local gentleman is helping me transport dog crates from the airport to the dog lot and then back again. I am grateful.

AJ crossed the line that marks the last 100 miles of his race not long ago. He’s lost place in the standings after yesterday’s event, but he and the dogs are safe, my heart is safe.

I’m passing time in community center until they kick me out when they close again tonight. Luckily, a local character is doing a reading of Robert Service’s poetry for race fans. He’s great.

Speaking of wonderful and unexpected things, today I received a call from our vet. This wasn’t unexpected as Coach, the dog not the father had a follow up appointment today. What was unexpected was the reason for the call. Coach was fine, yes, yes all is fine. She was calling to tell me that they recieved two anonymous donations for the cost of Rory’s medical expenses. Staff: may the quilt hold everyone in your family snug and safe.

My computer has lost all of T&G’s prayers–crapola. I know they are on Dishlickers but why would they disappear from my word document. Also had computer problems at work. Can we possibly blame it on solar flares {{{sigh}}} Giving up the fight for now.

Snowhook Team has pulled into B.Stover’s checkpoint of White Mountain. Whooohoooo! I believe they have a mandatory 8 hour lay-over so hopefully get some rest before starting for Safety and Nome.

Waking up now. We see we completely missed Golovin. Howdy Admin! Bye Chet and Bernie!
White Mountain WOOOO HOOOOO Hurray for B. Stover !!!!! Rest for 8 hours. That gives us time to get Mom and Pop out of the door and to their offices, so we can watch AJ and The Team leave White Mountain in peace.

Staff (and Dawson?), we are very very sorry to hear your news of your brother. Having lost her sister to cancer almost 4 years ago, Mom is really feeling for you. Losing a sibling is terrible. We will tuck that quilt securely around you and we will all be with you. Please feel our love.
