WOOF (More)

Hank Phillippi Ryan and Peter Abrahams in conversation about WOOF (from an interview at http://www.jungleredwriters.com):

HANK: So WOOF is the first of we hope many books about Bowser and Birdie, dog and girl, crimefighters of the Louisiana swamp. What was the first nugget of the book? When did you think–hey! And why?

PETER: I thought – hey! – when I got a call asking if I had any interest in writing a dog-narrated mystery for middle-schoolers. Why? Because it’s so nice to be asked, in this business. But the idea of a kid and dog pair exploring together the strange and dangerous world of adult humans seemed right. Then came the bayou setting, followed by Birdie and her grandmother. Some characters do write themselves, and Grammy is one of them. She’d have taken over the whole book if I’d let her.

Good morning. Rainy day here do Loulou will be unhappy. I hope we can do some walking between the raindrops. My downtown dog likes to be out on the sidewalks.

Hmm…regarding the link up above…I fail to see the connection.

Good morning to MPM, LouLou, the downtown dog, and HOH too.
Walking between the raindrops…an excellent idea.

My dearest Masquers: The Mets lost 5-4 in 14 innings. KC is a very formidable team. I think the Mets might have done better with Toronto. Just sayin’. But, who knows…the Mets may pull an apple out of the hat.

Ms. Macy: Just heard your news. Sending gentle tummies to you. Hope that you are tip-top soon, what with Wyatt on the job. I am sure Mr. Redbone Hound will be at your side shortly.

Just heard through a trusted source from my old busy place that the wench who threw the tissue box at me “has decided to take a new position, exploring another opportunity.” Read: My old busy place finally had enough of this b*&%h, and kicked her to the curb. I will not deny that I am very happy to hear this. She terrorized just about everyone in that company.

ALR: Grizz and I can’t wait to see “Bridge of Spies”.

Morning. Not a good one: it is raining T.C.s and Bellas. Mom says much worse weather is coming later today and tonight.
ML, we just read about Macy’s injury. Oh My! Let us know how she is doing. Also, investigate that e-collar that Bella got to wear instead of a nasty old cone. We got ours at Petco.

That Hobbit – always an adventure in store. Here is her pic from FB.

This was taken as she walked Sadie in her neighborhood!

Hoping Macy is recovering well. Tupper is still limping just a bit, and now Gilly is asking to be carried up and down stairs too. She doesn’t seem to have any sore spots, so we think it is sympathy pains.

Masquers — If you type Abrahams in the search box on the link, it will take you to Peter’s interview with Hank Phillippi Ryan, which actually took place back in May, and which is why you didn’t see any reference to it when you just opened the link. A good interview. FYI, Hank has won the Agatha for best mystery for the past two years running. I think Mollypop’s mom or maybe Barb (I can’t remember which) is now also a HPR fan. Also, if you are wondering, her real first name is Harriet but she got the nickname Hank in college and it stuck, which I think is a good thing.

Macy — best wishes, tail wags and licks from Teddy for a speedy recovery (and Mr. Redbone, please don’t be jealous).

Actually, New York’s sidewalk eateries have been open to dogs for a long time, legal or not. Years ago we took Yuji to the City Hall Restaurant on Duane Street (My favorite NYC restaurant). They immediately showed up with menus and a dish of water for Yuji. “We like dogs better than people,” the waiter explained.

To bad about my Mets, but it was a fine game, well fought. I predict they will win tonight and fly home with the split in hand.

Now we can have a sing-along:

    Uptown girl
She’s been living in her uptown world
I bet she never had a backstreet guy
I bet her mama never told her why

I’m gonna try for an uptown girl
She’s been living in her white bread world
As long as anyone with hot blood can
And now she’s looking for a downtown man
    That’s what I am

    And when she knows what
    She wants from her time
    And when she wakes up
    And makes up her mind

She’ll see I’m not so tough
    Just because
I’m in love with an uptown girl

You know I’ve seen her in her uptown world
She’s getting tired of her high class toys
And all her presents from her uptown boys
    She’s got a choice

    Uptown girl
You know I can’t afford to buy her pearls
But maybe someday when my ship comes in
She’ll understand what kind of guy I’ve been
    And then I’ll win

    And when she’s walking
    She’s looking so fine
    And when she’s talking
    She’ll say that she’s mine

She’ll say I’m not so tough
    Just because
    I’m in love
    With an uptown girl

She’s been living in her white bread world
As long as anyone with hot blood can
And now she’s looking for a downtown man
    That’s what I am

    Uptown girl
    She’s my uptown girl
    You know I’m in love
    With an uptown girl
    My uptown girl
    You know I’m in love
    With an uptown girl
    My uptown girl

Brings to mind last year when my son took me to a Billy Joel concert at the Garden. When he sang that song, the jumbotron cameras switched to a shot of a pretty blond lady grooving to the song. Turned out later that it was Christy Brinkley herself going to her ex-husband’s concert for the first time since the troubles. Then the next spring I got my 30 seconds with Christy at a photo op in Book Expo.

Out here near the West Coast we have rain, too! It seems to be the order of the day across the Chetster Nation. The Schnauzers here barely step out from under the covered patio.

Last night at my bedtime, shortly after 10PM for me, the World Series was still going and the stands were full. And I am appalled at all those folks still going full blast at 1AM! When you think about the time it will take for them to get home from that place I can’t help but wonder how things are going in their workplaces today! But it IS the World Series, so good for them to be there.

Get well Miss Macy. And I hope Lily is getting her balance back. Hooray that the witch from Wose’s old workplace is getting on her broom and flying away at an appropriate time of year. And good on the Howlers Mom for getting her shingles shot. I speak from experience that a case of shingles is horrible. Some years later I was able to get the shot, too. Don’t ever want to go through shingles again.

(whispering) I going to ask Santa for that DVD. I just bought what I think is their greatest record “Pet Sounds” on vinyl. Yes, we still do have a record player.

the song that came into my mind when the raindrops comment was made was a Donald Fagan one.

I tried to get the Shingles vaccine the last time I saw my nephrologist. (2 of my close friends have had shingles in the last year). He says I can not have it because it is a live vaccine. The vaccine wasn’t around before I had my transplant or they would have required it. sob and grump.

Moose are huge. I remember seeing one in our Sunflower field (about 20 years ago) The sunflower heads were the size of dinner plates and the moose just opened his mouth and ate them whole! Yeep!

Oh my goodness! This is so much more than just a “picture with”, Terry Ballard! You two look absolutely cozy!

My health care organization not only gives the shingles shot for free, they track you down like hunting dogs for every possible test, shot or procedure that can save them money in the long run if they can prevent or catch something in early stages. They even sweet talked me into a colonoscopy….aaack! I hated that whole thing! Good luck at getting a shingles shot covered, I have heard it is expensive. And Staff, I understand why it is not something you can do, so may you never ever have to go through shingles.

Hank Phillippi Ryan is not an author that A Loony Reader had ever heard of before! And she is a well know investigative reporter to boot just thickens the plot! I have checked out google and Goodreads and find I must rectify this situation as soon as possible. It looks like another read these books in order and watch the charactors build type thing. I’m glad this came up at the top of the page today.

And let me throw one out for a really great rainy day series. An Oregon writer, Scott William Carter, has a Garrison Gage series that starts with A Gray and Guilty Sea. He has three Garrison Gage books so far and the last of the three fits today….The Lovely Wicked Rain.

Sorry to be so tardy in getting back to you but this has been one heck of a day. I went to get Macy and had to wait quite a while. Finally got back there and saw her stitches, all seven inches of them. Then the v e t bandaged her, added stretchy tape and regular tape, gave me four prescriptions, and a large bill and we were out of there.
When we got home , I discovered that the bandages had slipped completely off the wound. Called the hospital, they said to bring her back. She had to wait though, because it was time for my diabetes education class.
The v e t said to put Macy in a kennel or a box for transport so she couldn’t move around too much. I put her in the recycle bin and off we went. Came home, decided to take a little nap before work and then realized it was time to leave already. I couldn’t find my purse anywhere, so after searching for 20 minutes I used my spare keys, Angie came by the house after work and found it in the back yard, where I left it when I took Macy out when we got home. Sheesh
