I am at work. Don’t know if the company computer is at fault, but I could not play the game. Drat!

Major stress goin on here. Darling Lily is at Luthern Gen in Chicago in the ICU. She had a bad fall off her horse yesterday and has a serious concusion. She was at the barn near their home and didn’t come home on schedule. Kelly called her and got no answer. Drove over and found 3 horses put away, and Iowa saddled and standing by the gate. No Lily. Kelly searched for her and found her lying in the pasture, very beat up looking and semi conscious. She had thrown up on herself and just kept saying she was sleeping. 911 called, taken to local hospital where they cut her clother off and checked for broken bones and internal injury. Then transported to Luthern by ambulance at midnight. They thought she had a brain bleed and Luthern has a children’s neorsurgeon. By 6:00 a.m. they determined that she does not have a bleed, but she is still very groggy and out of it. They will keep her today and will release her later if she is better. They said she can do nothing for several months that could potentially hurt her head. May have sort term concentration problems and headaches. Tough night for her parents!

Barb – special daytime prayers are being prepared as we speak. We will prayer for the strength of youth to prevail and help her heal quickly. And we will pray for the only lasting side effect to be a dim memory of this difficult time, for both Lily and her parents.
    And hugs for you.

Barb, how scary! Thank Kat that her mom went looking for her. Do you know if she wears some kind of helmet while riding? Sounds like it could have been much much worse so thankful that she is getting the care she needs and will be back home soon. Sounds like no riding for awhile.

T & G and everyone. Thank you, I appreciate all the prayers. You are special friends.

Have been reading up on TBIs, and found out a bunch that I didn’t know. Lilly is lucky and probably will not have permanent diaability, but it is going to take some time. No visitors, tv, texting, computers, reading, etc for now. Just rest. Evidently if she tries to return to normal activity too quickly she can have set-backs. Even talking causes the brain to work and slows healing. She will probably never remember what caused the accident, but Kelly’s phone is missing, so she might have been using it or taking pics when it happened. She is an excellent rider, so they think she might have been distracted and Iowa got spooked. Her jacket was 30 feet away from where they found her, so she might have been dragged. Who knows! I am having trouble concentrating tody.

Boo, no she was not wearing a helmet, but will be doing so in the future. No riding for now, and no biking, skiing, sports, etc. She is getting excellent care, so thankful for that.

Barb, Wish you didn’t have to work today, but hopefully having to keep your mind occupied on other things will help in some small way.

Very happy to hear Lily is expected to have a full recovery.
We too were wondering if she was wearing a helmet.

Barb, I am so very sorry and traumatized reading this!!! Today is my first day back in the office, but BooBear’s mom let me know. Thank you to her. How old is Lily now?
There are so so many instances of brain injuries from horse riding, and as others have said this really could have been much much worse. But this is bad anyway. I will be sending up prayers for Lily and her entire family.

Thanks to everyone. Your concerns and messages mean a lot to me.
Lily turned 13 last April. She normally would have been riding the trail, but didn’t leave the pasture due to hunting. Probably a good thing she was in a confined area.

Barb, you were wise to look up TBI’s. No matter how minor a head injury is, we need to be careful and observant. The DDD and I have been through this after he had a piece of equipment thing fail. Whenever possible be sure to ask the doctors what you can expect from this. So little is truly known about how our brains work inside our heads so stay on top of the information. Know that the plunderers and the Chetsters are behind you and really care about you.

Barb — I just read the news and am joining all the others in prayers and hopes for a speedy recovery for Lily. While still very serious, it nonetheless sounds as though she very lucky too. Also major league kudos to Kelly for being so diligent in looking for her.

Also, on the dog front, I too am a Jack Russell terrier; at least I’m keeping some very good company in that regard. For some reason I expected to be a golden retriever, go figure.

Barb: let Lily’s family know we are all thinking of her. What a scary situation and I am so glad she was found and now has good care. May every hour bring improvement.

Doctors are discovering more and more how dangerous head injuries can be. My adult nephew had a really bad migraine a couple of years ago (his first) and his brain is experiencing problems similar to a concussion. I think the first year he could barely work, drive, read, watch TV or be on the computer. Then he seemed to be fine but not too long ago had a set back. It might be very hard to restrict a young person so much but hopefully the injury will heal with no ill effects. And hopefully she won’t be afraid to ride again since she has enjoyed it so much.

Gosh I thought everyone wore a helmet these days whether horse riding, biking or skateboarding. I’m even beginning to think people walking around on icy, winter streets should wear a helmet!

B&M&L: You and your family are in our prayers. We here at the kennel understand TBI first paw. It sounds like your Lilly was fortunate in the scheme of things just like the Giant was.

Well gus, live and learn. Lily was not at a stable. A few months ago they moved Iowa to a private barn, where there are 4 horses. Kelly and Lily go over there (5 minutes walk from home)and do chores in exchange for board. No one lives there. The vet recommended this move due to Iowa’s leg injury. The pasture at the stable was too rough and he kept straining his leg. Lily does wear a helmet if she is doing speed classes, or if she were to jump, but has not been wearing one for trail riding. She also was there by herself, although Kelly usually goes with her. I guess there is no one to sue, except themselves.

Kelly just sent me a picture of Lily in her hospital bed with a Labradoodle therapy dog sitting hext to her. She has her eyes closed, but she is petting the dog and smiling a little.

Howlers, Lily has still been showing and doing drill team at the stable, but she uses one of the school horses. All she has been able to do with Iowa is walk due to his injuries. She is such a good rider that they didn’t worry about her ridng him alone. Go figure.

  45. Kat

I am on my way! Sorry for being late, but I had to wait for Momma to get home so she could take over donut-sitting (that’s what we call Bella nowadays).
Barb, Momma didn’t realize Lily had moved Iowa. And she wants you to know that she used to trail ride Shiek all alone, when he was anything but a horse who would calmly walk. She says sometimes a horse-crazy girl gotta do what she’s gotta do. I hope she makes a full recovery, and isn’t scared to ride after that. But seeing how long it took Pop to get his confidence back, as well as her friend Wendy, it is very likely that Lily will need to start very very slowly, with a patient trainer who helps her get over this accident. I’m wondering if a hunter’s gunshot is what spooked Iowa. Lesson in all of this is that horses are dangerous, and no matter how good a rider or calm a horse, one never knows.

I am relieved that those who needed to find Lily and care for her were able to do that. We teachers sometimes see kids who have TBI. We give them whatever breaks they need and we all weather the storm together. Scout says she should find a lap to curl up in.

not be afraid to get back on the horse and will not blame Iowa in any way. Might think twice about whatever else she might have been doing.
