WOOF

Here’s what Kirkus Reviews has to say:

In a Louisiana bayou town, a girl and her dog set out to solve a mystery, battling bad guys and big gators along the way. This original whodunit is narrated by an exuberant dog named Bowser, who has just been adopted by 11-year-old Birdie Gaux. Birdie and her grandmother are shocked to discover that a prized stuffed fish, Black Jack, has just been stolen from the family’s fish-and-bait store. How could a stuffed fish be worth stealing? Maybe if there’s a treasure map hidden inside. Birdie and Bowser begin to investigate in earnest, their sleuthing involving everything from breaking into rival establishment Straker’s World Famous Fishing Emporium, gathering clues at the library and the local assisted living facility, and traipsing through the bayou at night in search of the treasure that Birdie’s grandfather supposedly hid there so many years ago. Although it’s Birdie and Bowser who keep the plot zipping along, the unlikely detectives are surrounded by memorable characters both good and bad. And despite the villains, silliness and humor are paramount here, thanks to Bowser’s playful narration. Utterly charmed by a spunky girl and her charismatic canine, mystery fans will find themselves looking forward to a return to the little bayou town of St. Roch. (Mystery. 8-12)

I remember CHobbit telling the story of waking up in the middle of the night with Sadie outside her door and her tail wagging furiously. Quickly, followed by all the kittens coming up the stairs. C.Hobbit was wondering how all the kittens managed to get together and pull the door open. I believe one Sadie Bear pushed it open from the other side and let them all out. You go, Sadie Bear!!

  10. c.hobbit

BooBear: ha, ha. Could be. Sadie is really good around kittens although she has been determined that if they are allowed on the couch, so is she. At the moment I have no kittens but Sadie is still claiming her rights tot he couch.

Masquers: yes, I still have said cat. There has been improvement since she is out of her hiding place all night and most of the day (she goes under the bed or in my closet at 2:00 pm and comes out again at 7:00 pm). She also doesn’t hiss at me anymore and I can stand by her and feed her without her running away. I have even touched her a couple of times. Of course, if anyone comes into the house, she vanishes.

In light of the discussion about To Kill A Mockingbird a few days ago, this article might be of interest to some. A new Harper Lee book will be published in July called Go Set a Watchman. It was written before TKAM and featured an adult Scout. It was the flashback scenes in the book that had her editor suggesting that TKAM be written featuring a young Scout. The original book was hidden/lost all these years. Now it is being released kind of like a sequel to TKAM.

Wonder why Harper Lee never wrote anything after TKAM. Anyone know?

Hope you get some answers on Cleida. I was never able to get any help from my vets. They would make comments like “Well, it’s just a chicken!” I think unless it is an avain specialist they don’t know squat! Nor did the large animal vets I encountered really care.

I will admit that many places around here have tall but skinny metal stakes placed at the sides of driveways so the snow plows can “see” the sides of the road after a big snowfall.

The snow is deep! Hard to measure because the snowblowers and plows have piled it up, plus it is drifting like crazy.
We do have metal stakes up and down the street. At least we DID have metal stakes. There are only a few still standing.
All we know is it is more than Corgi height.

Wookie and Teddy’s Dad, They were wrapping up books as we left to back out into the snow. Yes, we finally got some snow. Only about 3 inches though.

It does seem a little more organized than the last time I went there. Or maybe they have had a slow day and could get stuff put away. I was looking for some early Frances and Richard Lockridge books but they only had a few and they were all ones I had. I might have to go searching at ABE and Alibris. And Amazon I suppose.

DianeC. I got a wonderful copy of the first Miss Julia (It is upstairs and I forget the name) off of Amazon. Someone in Georgia is liquidating their collection and it was only 6.00 and with shipping under 10. What a deal. Perfect condition and immaculate book jacket. I hate to use it.

Along with our chicken worries, we here are worrit about Rio’s friend. Luna included. What’s this? Luna just tied a scarf under her chin, packed Bellie Button’s sparkly pink backpack, and put our Lady in charge of Belle Starr—that will go over like an evil pug in church. Luna informed us that she was blurring to Friend’s busy place to have a Huffle and gruffle with the Hotshot about burdening Friend. This will be followed by an alert-upright-professional pep talk with the Hotshot and finally a piece of hard candy to help him feel better. Firm and loving—this is Luna’s way. She also plans to stay at the busy place for the rest of the day to run interference for anyone thinking about thinking about stressing Friend.

    Hello All,

Thank you for the well wishes on the Knik 200. We had a great race where the dogs ran steady for 83 miles each leg. They are in great shape and finished strongly. In fact we passed the 160 mile mark and the dogs started loping around the final loop. They then went on to finish the race with energy to spare and were up and around the next day like things were no big deal. So, we feel like things are looking up for the team this year.

    – I almost forgot to mention as a side note that Rio did not shut up at all for the six hour layover.

In other news we have been extremely busy getting the food drops ready. Vivian and I worked our way through 1000 pounds of meat and got most of it packed already. We just have a couple of things to go with this and they’re done. Then it’s vet checks, a few last runs and we’re off to the show.

The team that Phil has been running however has seen it’s share of problems lately. I’ve been working over the dogs and working with Phil on correct dog running management. This close to the race this aspect has been stressful. In order to make his team work I’m switching a few dogs around from my team to his team as well as borrowing a few dogs from another musher to fill his team out. With a little luck and a lot more concentration from Phil we’ll get him ready for the race.

Rebecca has been exceptional at rounding out all the edges for us as I’m out running. The logistics of putting one team into Iditarod is a big deal but working through 32 dogs is even more. I couldn’t do this without her.

If you haven’t already had a chance to check out our finish at the race we have it up on our facebook page. Thank you for your support as always. I have eaten my way through all current cookies and almost all of the Twix bars. We look forward to having you follow us this year and for those of you coming up here we look forward to seeing you again soon.

    See you on the trail

    Aj
