Wonderful News From Snowhook!

“For people new to this blog, Snowhook’s the racing kennel we’re very attached to up in Willow, Alaska,” Spence says. “Rebecca and AJ are  the wonderfully humane couple who run it.”

“Maybe one day we’ll even get up there,” Admin says. “But for now here’s an email from Rebecca. Could it make us any happier?”

“Only if we had pictures of these pups.”

“But no pressure, Rebecca!”

As Chief Naming Officer of the kennel, it isn’t just about picking a theme of names, and the right name for the right dog.  It is also about the right time.  Such a time presented itself during chores on Friday evening when AJ said, “We need to pick out names for the pups.”  I’ve been waiting for the right moment to have this conversation with AJ.  We entered the pen that houses the four pups who were born in February.

AJ sat on a low stoop and the first of four climbed on his lap.  “That’s Chet,” I informed him.  Soon AJ was covered in mud, fur, wagging tails and pink tongues as I introduced the other two boys—Bernie and Iggy.  The boys slid into their names with ease.  I’ve tried on many different names on the tiny girl, smaller than the rest of the litter.  Nothing seemed to fit.  Tonight it came to me—Little!

As we walked to the house after chores, I asked AJ if he knew the pups had already been named.  He responded with a smile in his voice if not on his face, “I suspected it for a long time.”

It’s official.  Snowhook now has a Little Detective Agency Litter with Chet, Bernie, Iggy and Little.

The Little Detective Mushers . . They can run for hours at Chet’s Go Trot. (Is that correct?) Hip, hip, hurrah!

Finally caught up from yesterday. What a day. Wrote on yesterday’s blog this morning. It was early, but I think it made sense.

It’s going to be a bad movie morning as Gracie and I both need a poultice. I can watch the TV and she can watch for treats coming out of my pocket.

    I love PUPPIES!

We miss them here. The spa morning went well. The bad movies were even too bad for me to watch (and that’s bad) so we have been watching people chasing tornados.

Sigh. Perfect. Too cool. I agree that Spence/Admin need to come to Alaska–maybe around the time of the Iditarod and do a book tour. The Chet&Bernie books, Simon&Schuster and Snowhook would all benefit along with all the winter-bound readers in the state, of course.

So…we have four little pups that need harnesses to chew/grow into. I’ll be looking into my loose change bowl later this week to see what is there to send to Snowhook. A penny here, a penny there, every bit helps and it all adds up to big things.

Glad! We here are glad youse all like the names of the pups. They’ve been named for a while, but AJ needed to be informed first. Iggy was named first and spontaneously when our Lady picked him up and said, “Iggy!” and he licked her face. It is our way of showing SQPA and all youse just a fraction of our gratitude.

Macy and Rio: There were two names that weren’t even considered for Little and you’ve guessed them both. There is speculation that Little may have a middle name: Cousin Bob.

Staff: We received the jacekts in the mail. It appears as though the package was in the hooves of the MGs for a short while. We suspect it was a training mission for the baby MGs Rio’s friend helped as it wasn’t completely damaged. The small bites were a rookie effort at best. We thank you for the jackets.

What are the bad little flags that the Howlers have around the chicken coop?

  52. Siber-H
    5:41 pm on May 11th, 2013

Stover, The bad little flags are what is called an invisible fence. They give a very mild electrical shock. They can be used to keep a dog in its yard without ever having to put up a fence. It does no harm to the dog.
The flags let the dog know that the electricity is turned on. The Howlers have already been trained with an invisible fence so they will know right away what the bad little flags are around the chicken house.

  53. Wolfie Wigglebutt
    5:48 pm on May 11th, 2013

Looks like we have a new family member today. You know Kelly and her gand lost Joe, their elderly Newfie last summer. They just put a deposit on a new little Newfie to be born this month, and to be ready to go home in July. He may be named Pete.

Now for the really surprising news. This week when Kelly took Gus to the vet for some tic stoff, she was introduced to two little rescue guys. One was a 5 year old Cav. King Charles Spaniel with a broken back leg. The prior owners said the dog was playing with their other dog and got the broken leg. Right!
The vet said he would fix it for free if they would let him rehome the dog. Case closed!

The other was a 1 year old darling little black and white fluffy mix. Might be a Shih tzu mix with poodle or maltese. The people kept him in a crate most of the time and then took him to a groomer and said they “didn’t want him any more”. Today the 3 kids, Kelly, Chad and Gus all went to meet him. He was a little overwhelmed I think. He went home with them and hopefully will have a good evening and a good life. He was named Nemo and then the vet changed that to Hero and they are going to change it to Moe, which is keeping with their short boy names, and sounds like his old names.

  61. Barb & Maggie
    6:18 pm on May 11th, 2013

Yes, they are still planning on taking Pete in July. They will become a three dog family.

This little Moe has a strange habit. The vet thinks it is stress related. He does this wierd thing where he spins in a circle and chases his tail briefly when he is stressed or cornered. Kelly says he looks like the Tasmanian Devil. They have tested him to make sure it isn’t neurological and apparantly it isn’t. They think it will go away after he has a more normal life. Has anyone had any experience with this habit? Any suggestions?

Rio, This does not sound like the normal spinning from excitement movement. More like a crazed, growling, spinning, tail chasing movement. He can be distracted and then gets over it. Might be from being crated too much, or maybe having little two legged antagonizing him while he was crated. Poor little guy. People are disgusting. Barb always says they should get what they give. Karma, or just punishment.

Barb, Mom agrees with Sharon about the spinning. It can come in more severe forms than what you have described. His doesn’t sound too bad and hopefully will go away on its own. The Dog Whisperer once did a program on this problem. Plus a good home, which he now has, I would also recommend exercise for the little guy.
The fact that he can be distracted is a good sign.

  77. Wookie's Dad

Wookie definitely felt an important part of his mission in life was to protect the homestead from the mailman. Thr nerve of that person– assaulting the house on a daily basis with all those envelopes and related things. We knew it as mail call, when Wookie’s barking let us know the mail had arrived. It was also known as red alert, because he had to let his pal Casey next door know that his house was about to be attacked next.

I teased out the definition from the surrounding paragraph, but decided to look it up. Very interesting and my idea of where the word came from was completely wrong.

See if you can figure it out before you hit the link . .

Yay! Puppies with perfect, special names. We’re excited for Snowhook and Spence.

‘Night all. Sleep well. Happy Mother’s Day a bit early to 2-legged and 4-legged mothers.

Donnybrook: A good old fashioned bust ’em up fight? Named after the place where that happened?

    GAH!

I have spent 5 hours fighting my printer. AUGGGHHH! I have given up. I don’t know what it is. I downloaded the driver and software so many times I have lost count. Then it told me it wanted me to use the disc that came with it. Then it told me the disc was for the wrong (earlier) OS which I could have told it too. Now I am officially retired for the day and maybe I will have the strength left to read the blog. Humph.

Anyway I love the names for the new puppies. I was wondering about them. I saw Wolfie’s post last night and all I can say is I hope things start getting better soon. And those girls, so sad.

I am going to fold clothes and then maybe I can sit for another little while and read today’s posts.

    BBL I hope.

Hi there! I know this is kind of off-topic however
I had to ask. Does running a well-established website such as yours require a lot of
work? I am brand new to running a blog but I do write
in my journal every day. I’d like to start a blog so
I will be able to share my own experience and feelings online.
Please let me know if you have any ideas or
tips for new aspiring blog owners. Thankyou!
