Winnie-The-Perp
“Here’s an interesting story,” Bernie says. “A black bear was walking around the Great Smoky Mountains with her head caught in a jar. They tranquilized her and got it fixed – otherwise, kind of like Winnie-the-Pooh.”
Winnie-the-Pooh? Sounds like a perp, meaning one day he’ll be breaking rocks in the hot sun. Looking forward to that, Senor Pooh? As for bears, that reminds me of something in The Dog Who Knew Too Much, something I don’t even want to think about. So I won’t.
Welcome Schatze the original Book Hound.

Good Morning! Mom loved, loved, loved Staff’s quilt pictures. And Snowhook’s Dogumentary. You just have to be picked.
Mom is not feeling much better. Next Saturday is the Buffalo Garden Walk, which has now become famous nationally, and she may not be able to see it if this strange malady doesn’t go away.

Don’t think about bears if you don’t want to Chet!
The one close encounter we have had with a bear up here in the wilderness, was on a fall afternoon. The Pack was asleep in the house and a neighbor of ours came running up to the house yelling, “There’s a bear in your side yard!”
That woke the Pack up and they scrambled out of the house picked up the scent and charged out to the yard. The bear had heard the barking and went over the fence. The electric fence did not bother him in the least! The Pack barked and growled and smelled and ran around.
I was able to make a cast of the bear’s print! Have no idea where it is now.
Another funny thing about bears . . . people keep telling us that they see our dogs on the street, but it will be a bear.
The Royals and Herbs get more bears than we do.

KirbyT: My mother taught me this song when I was little. Perhaps it can be sung when a certain someone is holding the blanket!
(to the tune of the “Star Spangled Banner”
Be kind to your web-footed friends
For a duck may be somebody’s mother,
Be kind to your friends in the swamp [Alternate line: She lives on the edge of a swamp]
Where the weather is always damp.
You may think that this is the end,
Well it is, but to prove we’re all liars,
We’re going to sing it again,
Only this time we’ll sing a little higher.
You sing it until you get really tired of it and then the last verse is . . .
You may think that this is the end….
Well you’re right!
I also sang it to my guys!

Bears! Another tantalizing snippet from The Dog Who…
Melanie: We thought of bears when looking at the picture of Zoe and the pack a while back. lol.
Alice & Abbie: Nana got a preview of Debbie’s famous Quilt when visiting Staff’s blog a couple of days ago. It has truly found a loving home.
MollyPop: Have you gone back to the doctor?
9:16 am on July 25th, 2011
To catch up from last night . . .
The Quilt and it’s placement is beautiful.
The pawdition was fantastic.
Gus . . . That was hilarious. We did NOT let the Pack watch that!
So BearSpiritDog, I’m not bringing the pool just the filter?
9:24 am on July 25th, 2011
Good morning all. Hope Mollypop’s mom starts to feel better. This has been going on too long!
Barb says when her kids were little she never could get into reading Winnie the Pooh. Some people even decorate their kid’s rooms with the Pooh theme, but it just never clicked for her.
Nana, what movie did you watch, anything good?
Have to go back to last night and see Staff’s pictures. BBL

I’m out of here furry and non-furry folks!
Patsy is still limping (on and off). Not sure what’s going on, hoping it isn’t lyme, but she does has weird reactions to bug bites. So it’s off to the V . . E . . T . . .
I wonder if she got that from me?

Good morning, y’all! When Mom and my girl were out yesterday Mom saw a VW Bug and was telling my girl about the two standard poodles in the backseat. And my girl said that if she ever got a poodle she would name it Winnie — as in Winnie the Poo(dle)! Mom groaned. Luckily, my girl already has these two dogs — my current nemises! — so she’s not likely to get another dog any time soon. I hope!!!
9:49 am on July 25th, 2011
P.S. Best of luck to Patsy at the V-E-T. But better her than me! (That wasn’t nice, was it? I’m sorry!)
10:00 am on July 25th, 2011
What I’m wondering is how the bear could breathe with his head in a jar. Scary parts in Dog Who with bears……Yikes! At least I’ll have the book and it won’t be a cliff-hanger.
Good morning all.
10:18 am on July 25th, 2011
Staff: The quilts on your blog are gorgeous. My favorite is “Deb’s Strip Twist” because of the colors and “movement.” You guys certainly have fun.
Hope Patsy is okay.
Good news Wolfie.
Liz is working on the cookbook….and laughing! Cool!!
10:28 am on July 25th, 2011
I hope the v-e-t helps Patsy. I hate going there because he sticks a thermometer in a place where a thermometer shouldn’t go.

Cookbook!…What’s so funny about a cookbook?…snort!
11:07 am on July 25th, 2011
I just posted a comment on Snowhook Kennel’s blog. Hope they win.
Sam: You have me laughing again.
Rio: Our cookbook is really interesting….
11:11 am on July 25th, 2011
Recipes!…I wish my friend would have been able to enter more recipes….snuff!…Sometimes her cooking is very interesting indeed….grunt! burp!
11:20 am on July 25th, 2011
OK we missed Wolfie’s good news. What was it? Help please!
11:42 am on July 25th, 2011
Barb: Wolfie said his dad is back home and things have calmed down.
11:44 am on July 25th, 2011
Princess Sam: Tenzing has the same feeling and bad memories about the V-E-T since he was a pup. To this day when we are led to the exam room of said place he backs into a corner and stands behind me.
Pulled an all-night and now off to the office. Have a great day, Plunderers.
Oh, I almost forgot. It seems both Rios are prone to burp. Rio the good scarfed down his food this morning before I even finished feeding the rest of the dogs. I went back to give him an ear scratch. He looked at me and well…burp…
11:53 am on July 25th, 2011
Junior!… snort! I just love that guy!…sniff!….Now we have to work on the other end…..heh!
11:59 am on July 25th, 2011
Barb&Maggie: Wolfie reported the dad is home and all is back to normal. > Last night’s movie was Saving Grace, from over the Pond. It was a comedy about a lady who finds a novel way to save her house from repossession after her husband dies.
Melanie: Tell Patsy to get better quickly so she’s feeling tip top in time to visit Bear. Yep, just bring the pool filter. The pack can have the whole downstairs to themselves. There’s a big screen tv & a separate exit to the outside for their convenience. Tiger will be glad to have the company. He’s almost as big as they are. We are counting 11 dogs. Do I hear pool party?
12:02 pm on July 25th, 2011
On consideration, I think that our cookbook should not only be used for cooking. It should be perused. (Love that word.)
12:16 pm on July 25th, 2011
B: Perused – one of our favorites too. Can’t wait for the Cookbook to be finished. We are looked forward to having it printed as a book (with your help, of course)
SnowBella: That dreaded word that shall not be named – the bane of dogs everywhere.
Melanie: That last guy is called Trigger, not Tiger. I’m still in The Hundred Acre Wood, lol.
12:17 pm on July 25th, 2011
“looking”…jeez
12:28 pm on July 25th, 2011
Rebecca: loved loved loved the pawdition! Thanks for sharing.
G&BB: still laughing at Gus and his pool.
Good to hear things have calmed down at Wolfie’s.
Have a great day all..back to work for us.

Dear and beloved Plunderers. Amalie here. This is aspecial request from Melanie. She just called me from the vets office. Patsy, Melanie’s beloved special puppy and constant companion for more than eight years has just been diagnosed with untreatable bone cancer.
This is very hard to write as I am trying to see the keys thru tears. All of Melanie’s dogs are wonderful and unique personalities , but Patsy is such a special dog, she truly stands out. Melanie helped to bring that little tiny black furball into the world. Patsy has been her friend, her physical therapy companion and at times a very understanding crying towel
Both Melanie and patsy need your prayers right now and the kind of support that only the Plunderers can give
Melanie most likely won’t be on the blog today but she will know that we are all here for her. Thank you all
12:51 pm on July 25th, 2011
Dear Amalia: I am writing this trying to see the page through my tears. Our thoughts and prayers are with that beloved member of the pack and the ones who love her so dearly.
12:53 pm on July 25th, 2011
Amalia, Please tell Melanie we love her and are praying for her and Patsy.
1:01 pm on July 25th, 2011
Melanie! Zoe! Dan! … My Pug Prayers and my friend’s thoughts and prayers are with you all.
1:06 pm on July 25th, 2011
Oh Dog!
This is so hard to accept.
My prayers go out to Melanie and also to Zoe and Dan and the family. And to Patsy that she does not suffer much.
1:11 pm on July 25th, 2011
Melanie: I’m so sorry. I wish there was something that I could do. Please know that we’re here for you.
1:25 pm on July 25th, 2011
Amalia, Thank you for deliverying that terribly sad news. We will be thinking about Melanie and Patsy. Please let her know how much we care.
1:48 pm on July 25th, 2011
Melanie and Patsy and the rest of the Pack. Please know that our thoughts and prayers from here in Chevy Chase are with you. Patsy has been truly blessed with a wonderful and loving home and family, and Melanie, Zoe and Dan has been blessed with the unconditional love of a special companion. The time that we are given to spend with our human families is never ever long enough, but every day of it is so incredibly special, and is to be treasured always, even after we are gone. Hopefully that thought can provide some comfort at this very difficult time. Love, Wookie (and mom and dad too)
1:53 pm on July 25th, 2011
Amalia, thanks for letting us know. Our prayers for Melanie’s and Patsy’s comfort in this terrible time.
2:00 pm on July 25th, 2011
We are so sorry. Our hearts and prayers are with Melanie, Patsy, Dan and Zoe. We love you guys, and please know that your siberspace family is there with you.
2:03 pm on July 25th, 2011
Ache! …My heart hurts. I’m going to go find my bed and lie down with all my toys and think of Patsy…sniff!…My friend that I never met.
2:34 pm on July 25th, 2011
Oh no! This is such awful news. Like Rio – this hurts my heart.
3:00 pm on July 25th, 2011
Our hearts hurt too. Poor Patsy and Melanie. We hope this is not too advanced and that perchance, Melanie can keep Patsy with her for awhile longer. (as long as Patsy is not in pain). This news is always so hard to accept. Melanie, Zoe, and Dan, your family on Chet’s is here for you.

Poem!…My friend found this poem and she said I should post it because it made her think of Patsy and Melanie….sob! sob!sob!
She’s just my dog.
She is my other eyes that can see above the clouds;
My other ears that hear above the winds.
She is the part of me that can reach out into the seas.
She has told me a thousand times over that I am her reason for being.
By the way she rests against my leg.
By the way she thumps her tail at my smallest smile.
By the way she shows her hurt when I leave without taking her.
When I am wrong, she is delighted to forgive.
When I am angry, she clowns to make me smile.
When I am happy, she is joy abound.
When I am a fool, She ignores it.
When I succeed, she brags.
Without her, I am only another person.
With her, I am all powerful.
She has promised to wait for me…whenever…
In case I need her; and I expect I will—
As I always have.
She is my dog.
3:19 pm on July 25th, 2011
I echo the thoughts and prayers of all of you.
Rio said it best: “my heart hurts…
for Patsy…the friend that I never met…”

Rio: That’s a beautiful poem.
3:27 pm on July 25th, 2011

What a lovely poem, Rio.
(I have to wipe away tears now)
3:57 pm on July 25th, 2011
Rio – thank you for that wonderful poem. We are going to print that out and keep it always. And share it with friends that need it
Bless you and your gentle, mushy little heart for giving the right words when they are needed
3:57 pm on July 25th, 2011
That is a beautiful poem, Rio. Our hearts hurt along with Melanies. Mom says that only a beloved animal can bring these kind of tears. They are special tears.
4:19 pm on July 25th, 2011
Wiping away tears also. I am so sorry to hear the news about Patsy. That is just so wrong. It is just so unfair.
Melanie, you and all of your pack are in our hearts.
4:20 pm on July 25th, 2011
Dear Melanie,
We are sharing your sorrow.
Rio, I love your poem.
We wish the best for Patsy. Especially that she doesn’t have to suffer.
and Melanie, Zoe and Dan, we wish you strength as you mourn your loss.
Abbie, Alice and Staff
(Thanks for letting us know Amalie)

Dear Melanie, Zoe, Dan and Patsy – prayer be with you, along with tears.
Rio & Friend – well done.
5:03 pm on July 25th, 2011
We just read Rio’s poem and are in tears again. That was from the heart. Thank you,
Rio. Hope Melanie knows how many of us are feeling her sorrow. Wish there was more we could do.
6:06 pm on July 25th, 2011
We here, after sobbing our hearts out, are now hoping to hear the prognosis -the expected course of this dreaded disease. Hopefully Patsy has some time while remaining out of pain.
Amalia, do you have any more information?
6:17 pm on July 25th, 2011
Rio, that poem is beautiful.
Here is what Melanie posted on Facebook: “We heard today that our Patsy, ELeanor’s daughter and mother to Frank, Grace and Katie has bone cancer. There is no treatment, but she will be with us for a while yet. She has been our perfect dog.”
T&G: We received Beautiful Watching Eyes. We love it…so do Mom & Pop. Thanks so much.
6:22 pm on July 25th, 2011
Rio: Tell your friend that zucchini can be used in a very good bread–a non-yeast sweet bread on the order of banana nut bread. I can post a recipe if she’s interested. The bread freezes well. It has cinnimon in it.

Fellow Siberians, Thank you for the news.

Prayers and hugs. You poodle buddy, Jasper.
6:44 pm on July 25th, 2011
Thank you for all your thoughts, prayers and poems . . . Beautiful on a sad day.
We will not lose Patsy yet. The bone cancer (very clear on the x-ray) is only on her lower leg. If she were younger they would amputate, but my beloved Patsy is over 8 1/2 years old. Our vet has given us pills that will help the pain, she is not in a lot of pain right no just the occasional limp, and he is amazed at how healthy she is otherwise. Chemo is not a choice, it is the kind of cancer that is not helped by it. Radiation is a choice, but not a great one. It doesn’t extend life for long. It would diminish her quality of life. Having been through months of hard core medications myself, that did not help, I do not wish it on my Girl.
She is going on an all protein diet to lose around 10 pounds. 145 pounds is a more healthy weight and less pressure on her leg.
My bed is really high so I will be building a ramp so she can get up easily. I will be looking into acupuncture for her. It should help with the pain so not so many drugs.
Thank you guys for all the love coming our way. I’ll be better tomorrow. Not only did the news give me a shock, but I managed to trip on the sidewalk and fall on my bad knee and my side. It’s swollen and I hurt.
Jeez
I’ll be going to bed soon, thanks again. I can not tell you what all your support means to all of us here.
6:50 pm on July 25th, 2011
Thank you for letting us know Melanie. I wish there was more I could do.

Zucchini recipes! Do we have zucchini recipes! We grow them in our garden and its hard to keep up with them. But here is Mom’s favorite recipe…
Nutty Summer Squash with Asiago Cheese:
2 tsp butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 med zucchini, cut into 3″ strips
1 med yellow summr squash, cut into 3″ spears (you can use 2 zucchini instead of 1 zucchini and squash if you want)
2 tbl chicken or veg broth
1/8 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
1/4 cup chopped walnuts, toasted
1/3 cup shredded Asiago cheese
Melt butter in large nonstick skillet over medium-low heat.
Add garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, for ~1 minute.
Add zucchini/squash, broth, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
Cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 6 minutes.
Remove from heat
Sprinkle with walnuts and cheese.

Melanie we had someone build very deep steps for Wookie when he started having mobility issues. We tried ramps but they were too steep for our boy. We can photos and measurements if that might help. I know giving you both the opportunity to snuggle is so important! Debbie

Oh Melanie, I’m so sorry to hear about Patsy – but it’s great to hear she will still be with you a while yet. (I just got to her chapter in Dan’s wonderful book last night). It’s great she will still be having sleeps on your bed and not suffering through horrible treatments.
Rio, terrific poem.
B – please post the zucchini recipe!
BSD – I saw Saving Grace, that was such a cute movie. I loved it when they all got the giggles.

Dan!…The Man! We received your book Second Chance today…snort!… When my friend opened the book and read what you had written and saw the extra-bonus surprise she showed it to me and then she started crying and had to leave the room…snuffle!…Her mother was asking how you guys knew me….snort!… It seems you addressed the package to me and this was quite confusing to her…heh!heh! …”How do they know Rio and how do they know he is evil?”….chorkel!snort! …What she doesn’t know could fill a blog…sniff!

Melanie, we’re so glad that you and family will still have some quality time to spend with Patsy. We’re sure less weight will make it easier for her, but such a bummer to have to put her on a diet now. We think she should have ice cream whenever she wants!! Sounds like you have several really good ideas for treatments to help her with pain management.
Our picture of Franklin in the Snow arrived today. He is truly a rock star!! Thank you so much. Mom finally has a Newf!

Going to watch The Closer now. Received Cape in the mail today, but will have to hold it for a day or two. Never miss Closer!
Glad to hear the Patsy has some quality time left to spend with Melanie, Zoe and Dan. That will be extra special time together.

Hi everyone. Just talked to Melanie. She is so grateful for all the love you all sent.
There was a time a while ago that Melanie herself had a bad cancer scare. We KNOW it was prayers and support and love that got her thru that. And we know that Patsy will be supported in the healing hands of the Plunderers. Thank you all for taking such good care of my friend.
9:15 pm on July 25th, 2011
Liz: I didn’t know what asiago was either. But, don’t you just love it? All you have to do is “Ask”.
Sweet Dreams Melanie and Patsy – snuggled all cozy in your bed.
Good nite here too.

Melanie,
Just want you to know that we, too, are sending lots of prayers and positive energy your way. God Bless.

Walk!…hmmmmphf!… I got out of going on walks there for a while because my friend was always too tired from moving to even think about it….grump!…Well, she’s all rested up now and the Rockies don’t start playing the Dodgers until 8:00…sniff!…She says that gives us enough time to “stretch” our legs…grumble!…Doesn’t she know its still 90 degrees out there?….wheeze!…I’m going to die, or fry or both…cough!sneeze!

Gus and BooBear – you most wonderful of kitties! The jacket arrived while we were away at the show. Just got home and opened the box. My Dog this is beautiful!!! And your packing was very impressive – not a wrinkle or crinkle to be seen. We know one person who is going to be very happy (not to say very impressed) to get this marvelous jacket.
And Howlers – we are so glad you like Watching Eyes. Gues that means no more mischief in your house, now that the eyes are upon you. tee hee.
Snowhook – we finally got to see the dogumentary audition too…couldn’t pull it in with the (pitiful) wifi on the road. It was wonderful and the body language says even more than your words. Garcia was great – is that mouthing thing typical behavior of the huskies?
Well, we are all unpacked and exhausted from our incredible weekend. So now its time to crawl back into familiar beds and feel at home for a couple days before the next show.
…..and away we go………..

I’m finally home, yet I wanted to post earlier so Melanie would know I was thinking of her and the Pack. The short blurbs were the only messages I thought might be discernable from my phone.
Melanie: I’ve said it before and I meant it: The only bad characteristic of a dog is they have the ability to break your heart. I asked Coach and Bev to keep you and the rest of the Pack, two and four-legged in their prayers. I think they upgraded for the platinum package, because their prayers seem to have an extra something.
11:54 pm on July 25th, 2011
Melanie: Today was Mom’s night at the library, so I’m a little late getting here. I was so sorry to hear about Patsy, and Mom said she had to stop looking at the blog at work because she started crying at the desk. We’re glad you’ll still all be able to spend some time together. Our best to you, Dan, Zoe and, of course, Patsy.
12:03 am on July 26th, 2011
Kirby T: Like your mom, I was a mess. I saw the original posting shortly before I went into a meeting and all I wanted to do was call the meeting short. I too am glad that Melanie and Pack can treasure their time together.

Kirby T. Penworthy: Ruby Jo’s parents know a package is coming from you so they will be on the lookout. Now every time they read your book to R.J. they can say: “Canada, that’s where Grandma Dawson lives!”
Not a good night for our baseball teams. Except Texas.
Melanie: I am grateful the cancer has not spread and you will have time yet to spend loving your friend.

Hearts are funny things. They can over joy, can hurt and howl, break, love, beat and not beat all because of friendship.

Loving thought to all who hurt,
Hugs to all in pain.
Holding memories in our hearts
Until we meet again.
Just..so..sad…
Nite-nite
