What’s In A Name?

Ms. Publicist: Fifteenth of the month and therefore time for What’s In A Name, where Spencer Quinn and I discuss a character name from the Chet and Bernie mysteries. What’s it going to be this month, Spence?

Spencer Quinn: How about Charlie, Bernie’s son, missed by him dreadfully after the divorce. I think the name says something about Bernie and his ex-wife Leda, and the state of their marriage at the beginning.

Ms. P: Which was good?

SQ: I think so. These are revolutionary – or at least rapidly evolutionary – times when it comes to naming kids. The fact that they gave their son such a traditional, unexciting, but at the same time esthetically quite pleasing name, at least to my way of thinking, says something. And this notion – that Bernie and Leda had something good at one time, has, in truth, just occurred to me! I may do something with it.

Ms. P: Such as? Uh, Spence? Where are you going?

Good morning, everyone! Charlie is a nice, strong, simple guy name.

Can we have a silly Saturday?

    A Silly Saturday it is.

Charlie is a nice sweet name. Doesn’t seem like a name Leda would pick, does it? She is not down to earth like Bernie.

We are supposed to get some more snow this afternoon, then gradual warming to 50 degrees by mid week. Flooding will occur.

    Morning all.
We always thought “Charlie” was kind of a strange name for this time. And thought it would be more in keeping if Leda called him Charles, and Bernie called him Charlie.

Jeeze – next we will be discussing whether Harry Potter should have married Hermione instead of Ginny.

    Remember me?

I’m going home today! I miss my Mac and Mattie. (and Zoë).
I have had five scans and not a single lollipop. BelleStarr can you handle this?

They have put me on new meds. They made me throw up for 6 hours.

They did drain a lot of fluid from around my liver. What happens next? Don’t know.

OTAS is picking me up and then I can rest from th hospital. Thank the Creator.

I look foward to watching the start of the RACE!

I wouldn’t look for me any time soon. Exhausted. I love your cards, pictures and goodies.

Min-Pin: Don’t feel bad…I, myself, joined in last night with yowls. The point is…we were all there.

Paws crossed the snow in Alaska continues.
T&G: Names are such important things, aren’t they? It is said they determine who we are. Hence if you change your name you change yourself. Wondering if our birth name sets the tone for one’s life. Pondering.
HOH: I would truly like to have a silly Saturday and will do my bestest to do so…awakening this morning to a avian (not the metal band) solo was a good start.
OFA has had an epiphany! What will come next? A new book idea perhaps. (sorry, B, I know you think he may be veering off course.)

T & G, You are right, Leda would have called him Charles for sure. That reminded Barb of her daughter’s MIL naming her two boys years ago. She wanted to be classy so they were named Chadwick and Bartley. Really? They became Chad and Bart, which is much better IMHO.

I also think Leda would have called him Charles (or maybe something like Charlton, to be pretentious) and I think her backstory might be interesting in small doses (or re-introduction as a kidnap victim, or something).

    Hello All,

Just another quick update… We still have no new snow but we do have some coming in the forecast so there is still a chance for those of you coming to Alaska that the race will start in Willow. Training is proceeding nonetheless and food drops are done which is a big relief. We sent about 1700 pounds of food across Alaska to supply the race. Now all that is left is to wait until Monday to find out where we start from when ITC makes the decision.

On another front I reflect often on the sacrifice you all make so I can run this race. It seems that I can do little to repay this kindness, but in this year the team can at least recognize one Plunderer in a small way. As many of you are aware Melanie is ill. She has a strength and bravery that I don’t know that I have in crossing Alaska. So, this year the team will all be sporting purple collars which is Melanie’s favorite color in order to take Melanie along the trail with us. The Plunderers are always on the trail with us, and this year’s run is dedicated to Melanie.

See you all on the trail,
    AJ

Two of my strange name stories:

    1. A friend of mine was dating someone named James. She met his bother named Jim (his real name). Later she met their mother (who became her MIL) and told me that she was pretty sure that the mother didn’t realize that Jim is the diminutive of James when she named both her boys.

    2. Someone wanted to give their baby girl a unique name and so named her Abcde (pronounced AB-SEE-DEE). I always pitied the girl and her teachers. At least the little girl learned the first 5 letters of the alphabet easily.

We all must remember that the C&B stories are written and told by Chet who has no use for human romance stuff. I don’t think a rekindling of Bernie and Leda romance is on the horizon. Perhaps a backstory in the form of an e-story.

A.J. You had us in tears here. What a wonderful tribute, to run the race in Melanie’s honor and with her favorite color.

Boobear, We can’t see the Bernie – Leda romance being rekindled either, but Diane’s thought about Leda being kidnapped sounds like it could be fun. Chet could find her first while Bernie is off somewhere, and then could bring her back like with Princess or Peanut. Maybe she would even learn to love Chet by the end. Doubtful he would love her.

Love the names. When I was teaching I had a student named Urine (pronounced You-reen) whom I wanted to call PP for short, and another one named Female (pronounced Fem-a-lee.) The story goes that when her mother saw “Female Smith” on the birth papers, she thought her husband had named the baby and the father thought the mother had chosen a name. To of my other favorites were Rocky Mountain and Liberty Fountain. Honest.

Well we here want to announce some more good news. I had a play date today with Lucy, a 9 year old Bassador (Lab-Basset mix). She is going to come live with us after Barb’s trip out east in March. Gucci is not coming for a couple of reasons. It turned out that her medical needs were high, and she is going to stay in foster. The people at the agency also thought she was too short to be a good companion for me, so they suggested Lucy instead. Since Gucci is quite old they thought she could get hurt if I stepped on her back while playing. Lucy and I had a lot of fun while she was here and the agency lady said it couldn’t have gone any better. Did they have any doubts? Here is a picture of Lucy.

Boobear, Gucci is actually very happy in her foster home. She is with a couple other Bassets and a small terrier. There is also a ten year old girl in the household that she adores. Gucci ended up having to go to the vet 3 times in a week for 3 different problems, first the UTI, 2nd an eye infection (eye drops now forever), and the last was inability to move around well. When they are in foster the rescue group gets special rates from the v*e*t and they cover the medical costs. Gucci’s last problem with mobility concerned both Barb and the rescue group, and they thought she might mix better with short legged companions.

What great name stories. Yes, when you are in education, you see it all. One of my friends who taught first grade for 30+ years had a class where 21 of the 15 students had weather or sky-related names: Sunny, Starr, Dusty, Zenith, Misty, Dawn, Eddy, Sky, Beaufort, Gail (Gale), Rainey, Rainbow, Summer, Ocean, Violet, Celestial, etc.

They are obviously pretty solid and my nephew has a bad back. So he volunteered his adult stepson who I guess works out. If we get a time frame for Monday, it might be doable. There are two 3-shelf book cases and three 5-shelf tall bookcases. Of course, I don’t want anyone hurting themselves so if it is too much, I’ll hire professional movers.

CHobbit: The Giant is on a long training run today. My mama will ask him his schedule for Monday, and she will get back to you. She will be in her moose head village on Monday and Tuesday otherwise she’d offer to help. I say she is only allowed to kat-kall the Giant and no lifting.

I feel bad for all who made plans to go to Alaska who now cannot make the trip. Those of us who are still going will be thinking of you and will give the Snowhook doggies some extra tummies just from you! I just hope nothing happens between now and then to waylay any more of us.

Melanie: 5 Scans!? Six hours of vomitting!? Thank dog OTAS has come to rescue you and take you home where you won’t be poked or prodded except by Mac and Maddie.

AJ and Rebecca: I love, love, love the bright purple collars! What a great tribute to Melanie.

Tyb: Love the box of chocolates!

Funny name stories! I’m enjoying all the far-out names. A-a and Abcde definitely win prizes for being nuts! Charlie is a good name.

More to Rio: We were among the ranks taken for the first round of vet checks earlier this week. The Giant can only choose from the dogs who were checked earlier this week. Did we put up a fight? Maybe. Is sitting still for the EKG machine to read our hearts our idea of fun? Nope. Was a table knocked over in the process? If memory serves, yes.

Gah! Just got back from taking Sadie on a walk and her urine showed red again. Very red. Two weeks ago there was one instance of a bit of red but otherwise she has been clear. It is our considered position that skeleton riders steer by their butts – they can’t be steering with their heads cuz those have to be empty! Sliding down a big tunnel of rock hard ice, headfirst and going 80 miles an hour! Do their mothers know what they do for a living??!?

    Ok, off our soapbox now.

Melanie has gone to her own home sweet home in the company of her handsome son and her happy mother. She will be able to sleep in her own bed, even if there are no baseball toys involved.

She has promised to behave and be safe (HA! – she will do whatever she dam well pleases, or our legs aren’t shorter than an estory) We wish her a wonderful, deep healing sleep, without bells going off and someone in the next room yelling “Hello? HelLLLLOOOOOO?” every two minutes.

We read her the post about the purple collars and the race being dedicated to her. It made her cry, but they were happy tears.

Those of you going north – Melanie and Mama will be sitting together, watching the Iditarod start live on the website. We expect waves! Big, happy, grinning, toothy smiles and two handed waves! Ok?

Dawson: I forgot too…thought you had sent your flight info, but now don’t see it…send it again just in case.
Purple ribbons! the Plunderers will be wearing purple ribbons! (and holding up a big sign saying: GO SNOWHOOK!!!)
Macy: Need more information…leaving from/going to (stops or layovers), time of arrival? etc, etc.
You can send to my SDD.
    Oh, oh…lights are flickering…sign-off time.

Masquers: I will find and send that info to you tomorrow. I am on the same flight from Seattle to Anchorage as the Staff’s but I will be at the airport a couple hours early so I can hopefully connect with you.

My eyes are burning from watching too much tv. Calling it a night.

    Prayers for Plunderers.

Miss Pretty Edgar and Conan blurring sequins to Belle Starr now.

Miss Sadie–Hoping the situation is effectively analyzed and cleared up quickly. Red will not look good with purple ribbons.

P and L–“Backup” seems to be a common nickname in V E T technology (also in law enforcement).

Masquers–Are faux pas different from regular normal paws?

Rio et al–Skeleton and luge (which I used to disparage) now my two favorite events (and probably the only thing I follow this year).

A strange wavelet of catchy comparisons has crept in–legs shorter than an estory? going downhill fast like this blog?

I much appreciate. Catch you all later this a.m. (on tomorrow’s blog).

AJ, purple it is. Melanie is home and tired. She is delighted with the purple and the going across Alaska with your dedication to her. Zoe
