What’s In A Name?

Mrs. Publicist: A couple of days late, but how about we do What’s In A Name, where Pete and I discuss a character name from somewhere in his work? Pete, I was wondering about Dr. Machado, the somewhat unhelpful shrink from The Right Side.

PA: Certainly unhelpful from his patient LeAnne’s point of view. Machado means ax or hatchet in Spanish and Portuguese.

Mrs. P: So – a crude kind of tool for doing delicate work?

PA: Exactly! You don’t need me anymore!

Mrs. P: See you July 15 for more of What’s In A Name!

    Greetings!

    Interesting indeed.

The Westminster Dog Show begins this weekend. Once again, it is being held close to my neck of the woods, at Lyndhurst in Tarrytown. For those of you who were fans of the soap “Dark Shadows”, you may recognize the exterior of Lyndhurst as the Collinwood estate.

    Good day to everyone!
We always enjoy watching the Westminster kennel club show.
Rose, thank you for the information about the estate they’re in Tarrytown and they show Dark Shadows. Loved that show when I was in high school. Used to walk briskly home to see it from the start.

HOH: Grizz loved that show! He chose the name Barnabas as his confirmation name as a tribute to Barnabas Collins. Every so often he will watch the show on-line. :^)

I used to watch Dark Shadows, the original. My brother and I would rush home from school to watch Dark Shadows and the Galloping Gourmet. I recently read that Jonathan Frid had died.

I’ll have to see if I can catch Westminster streaming anywhere.

I’m watching The Old Man on Hulu/Fx and love Dave and Carol, two very intelligent and well trained Rottweilers. I’ve been partial to them since before I discovered Alexandra Day’s Good Dog, Carl books. (I have them all.) I used to see the Rottweiler club at the local Mother Goose parade pulling their little miniature Conestoga wagon carts all decorated up for Thanksgiving. Great fun. I love big mutts and I cannot lie.

I looked up the book and the author and wondered if anyone else is familiar with Thomas Perry. I’m thinking of buying Metzger’s Dog. What’s in a name? Well Dr. Henry Metzger is a cat and when his owner (a petty criminal) and his gang steal a literal junk yard dog, the only one that can control the dog is the cat, hence the title. Metzger’s Dog. (Dr Henry Metzger was a German-born American Immunologist.)

With Dave and Carol in The Old Man, I’m wondering if Thomas Perry has a soft spot for big, black dogs.
