What’s In A Name?
Ms. Publicist.: A day late, but time for our regular once-a-month feature, What’s In A Name. Who will it be today, Spence?
Spencer Quinn: How about Suzie Sanchez, Bernie’s reporter girlfriend who left the Valley to take a job at the Washington Post. She has a big part in Paw and Order.
Ms. P.: I notice you spell Suzie with a Z, not an S.
S.Q.: Right. I like the two Z’s in her name. Suzie Sanchez: there’s something percussive and musical about it, almost like the name is a tiny piece of music all on its own. Talk about allure! Also it’s an unpretentious name, and Suzie’s obviously not bothered about the diminutive. But there’s nothing cute about her. She’s sharp, determined, self-reliant. I like that contrast.
Ms. P.: Sanchez is a Hispanic name.
S.Q.: She’s from the Southwest, and Sanchez has some heft to it, almost like the opposite of a diminutive. Will she keep it if she and Bernie get married?
Ms. P.: Whoa! Are you telling us something?
S.Q.: Gotta take a call.
Welcome Isabel (detective).

Of course she will keep her name if she gets married. I did. Doesn’t everyone?
9:19 am on December 16th, 2013
Besides then she would be Suzie Little. Talk about diminutive!
9:20 am on December 16th, 2013
Good morning Staff!
9:22 am on December 16th, 2013
Hi Staff and Abbie!
9:24 am on December 16th, 2013
Good morning, everyone! Thanks for the skinny on Suzie, we like her. Staff is out and about early today. And on late last evening (mmm, are you doing a Melanie?) BTW, loved your You Tubes. Mom did, too. Does that make y’all twins? Just like Lucy Stone who was the first feminist to openly defy a name change.
Let’s all have a maximum Monday 🙂
9:26 am on December 16th, 2013
“Mom did too” as in 1) loves You Tubes and 2) not change her name (after all, it’s not like sox, doesn’t get dirty).
9:32 am on December 16th, 2013
Good morning all. Looks like Suzie may be around for awhile. We think she would keep her name.
Snow coming later to mess up evening rush hour.
Got a busy day. BBL
9:48 am on December 16th, 2013
also didn’t change the name (although, interestingly, the husband offered to hyphenate)…
9:52 am on December 16th, 2013
So would it be Bernie Little-Sanchez or Bernie Sanchez-Little?
9:54 am on December 16th, 2013
Hey, Diane. Mom’s 1st hubby pitched a fit and fell in it. #2 offered the same as yours. Ain’t men a hoot ?
9:55 am on December 16th, 2013
B&M, depends on if you do it the hispanic way (male-female) or the English way.
10:06 am on December 16th, 2013
We’ll, you do have to be careful about hyphenating names. We knew someone named Green who married someone named Kelley. And her sister married a guy named Meeney. They both hyphenated female/male. We only wish the sister had been a school teacher. Then, when her students complained about her being a Green-Meeney, the parents would have to agree
Good morning all. And keeping Dawson in our thoughts.
10:09 am on December 16th, 2013
Mom got married before it was common to keep your name, so she has Dad’s name. I know a few others on here do too? Right? Mom doesn’t want to be the token relic.
10:09 am on December 16th, 2013
Perhaps mom should have said the hispanic way is to put male y (for and) then female. It always reminds her of an oral genealogy.
10:13 am on December 16th, 2013
Interesting.
Good morning all.
10:18 am on December 16th, 2013
So Staff, you were BORN N D? Were the books written about you?
10:43 am on December 16th, 2013
Good morning. We have always loved the name Suzie Sanchez. It sounds so film noir to us. (Is that the correct term?)
Of course Suzie will keep her name. She is professionally known by that name. Macy, your mom has company. Mom was known in her field too, and so she wanted to keep her name. At the time, very few women were keeping their names, or at least very few women who Mom or Pop knew. Pop’s feelings were hurt because he thought Mom was ashamed to take his name. Mom relented because she did not want to hurt him over the name thing. Now, though, Pop gets it, and he wishes he would not have pressured mom to change her name. Ironically, mom is now happy she changed it because she finds it confusing to address her friends and their families where the mom’s name is different from the children and husband.
Mom did retain her “maiden” name as her middle name. She never signs anything without at least that middle initial. Those of you on facebook are accustomed to her full name.
10:50 am on December 16th, 2013
Hey Macy,
YUP. N.D. is my birth name. I told Mr.Staff that if he wanted us to have the same name he could change his. He declined. Although there are a few places that think he is Mr.Drew. The VET’s for one. snicker.
And I was born about 16 years after the series of books started. That was in the early 30’s. So no, they didn’t write those books about me.
Dawson was always grumpy that I had the name since she had the blonde curls.
11:08 am on December 16th, 2013
Dawson,
I’m so sorry to read of your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
Peace.
11:11 am on December 16th, 2013
We see Spence has chosen B’s very favorite character for the “what’s in a name?” segment. snicker.
11:16 am on December 16th, 2013
Dawson: Just read of your loss. We are so sorry. You and yours are wished comfort now and in the coming days.
11:23 am on December 16th, 2013
I was trying to think of something clever about Suzie and name changes or my name change, but I have done used up all my thinking power for the day.
Saturday I received an important piece of mail about appointments at the clinic. Not speaking their language I was disturbed that things had been taken away and added.
I called the main part of the clinic this morning. That appointment person sent me to another appointment person who sent me to the wrong appointment person, but she decided to help me and put me on hold BEFORE I COULD GET WHICH DEPARTMENT IT WAS AND THEIR PHONE NUMBER.
I was on hold for 30 minutes. I finally hung up. There was a message from the woman I had to talk with about the appointments. Aaaaaarrrrrrrggggg
So I talked with YSAS instead. Got my balance and called the correct department.
Turns out I don’t have to be raced down the corridor in a gurney wearing only a hospital gown.
Isn’t that nice?
MORE COCOA!
11:27 am on December 16th, 2013
Cocoa for all!
11:33 am on December 16th, 2013
Melanie: Is this the Good News we hope it is?
We will be joining you and Macy in that cup of cocoa.
Because the past 2 months have been spent in a environment of Time Distortion, we have give up hope of changing our hours to normal and will just have to wait until the Sun makes a return to our Northern skies.
11:46 am on December 16th, 2013
Just read last night’s post and learned of Dawson’s MIL passing. She mentioned earlier that she was not doing well. We are so sorry to hear the sad news. God’s speed to her on her journey.
11:47 am on December 16th, 2013
Suzie!…She seems to always be flying off the handle…grunt!
11:50 am on December 16th, 2013
We know a lot of people with the last name of Sanchez. Some of their ancestors arrived in NM before the Northern European types.
Macy, My mom is another relic, but she also thinks hyphenated last names are too much trouble to use either verbally or in print and refuses to use them.
11:52 am on December 16th, 2013
Dawson, we are thinking of you. These holidays are rather bittersweet, aren’t they? Bah
11:52 am on December 16th, 2013
Dawson, Hugs…have a safe journey and we are so sorry about your MIL.
11:59 am on December 16th, 2013
Dawson, thinking of you and the Man of the House.
BearSpiritDog, no news as of yet. Just getting ready for appointments.
12:08 pm on December 16th, 2013
Staff: Funny the reference to ND earlier…#1 son looked at a card you sent and remarked: “Wow. You know ND?”.
Why yes, Yes I do. Heh, heh.
Speaking of name changes…a former DIL insisted on keeping her own name after marriage (maybe this is why she is now the Former DIL) A quirky side note: Grand has her maiden name as his middle name. She, a girl, was the only child so this is her way of carrying on the family name. When he was taking Karate lessons his instructor remarked that he shared this unusual feature with him.
12:13 pm on December 16th, 2013
Now that the Stamps are here we can Mail Cards.
Also, time to get ready for an Appointment in an hour.
And we haven’t even had Breakfast yet.
THAT will never do.
12:36 pm on December 16th, 2013
Dawson, so sorry for your loss. Purrs and hugs to you and the man who lives in the house.
BooBear
12:37 pm on December 16th, 2013
Feed the Bear. Quick.
I keep forgetting to mention to #1 daughter, who loved the books, that I know ND. She will be so impressed.
J D Dawson, so sorry for your loss, and that of the man.
1:07 pm on December 16th, 2013
I learnt two things today.
1. When using you sonic toothbrush pay attention so you don’t knock it out of your hand and it keeps going all over your robe, nightgown and sink.
2. When making up chicken noodle soup using bullion and noodles – haven’t been to the store for a while – the microwave will boil the pretend soup out of the container into the microwave and on to the counter. The silver lining is the part that boils over seems to have been the rest of the fat from the bullion.
Sigh
1:09 pm on December 16th, 2013
Many famous people on this here blog. Grand, age 7, was very impressed that we got a package from the North Pole. She is a bit too young to know ND.
1:15 pm on December 16th, 2013
Macy the Min Pin and Mom,
I have discovered what we need. If others want to join us, great. Room for all.

1:24 pm on December 16th, 2013
Mama will go for that as long as it includes a ski lift to get back to the top.
1:37 pm on December 16th, 2013
Our mom is too afraid of heights 🙁 The grands here turned up the already turned up noses at mom’s N D books until they found out that their abuelita knows N D.
Dawson and man. There are only so many words of condolence. Hope you both find acceptance and serenity soon. BSD, we like hearing from you “early” your time. Oh, and mom’s reason for keeping her last name? It is Dutch, didn’t change when ancestors arrived, got tired of hearing she was supposed to be a boy and she is a little STUBBORN 🙂
1:55 pm on December 16th, 2013
Melanie, Mom will definately go for that. Where is it? Do you know?
BTW, I am not going with her.
1:59 pm on December 16th, 2013
Melanie, I would so do that!
2:08 pm on December 16th, 2013
Melanie: We here agree with the Herbkats…must have a ski-lift or elevator to return to the tippy top.
Also, like Siber, I’m not too fond of agua other than as a beverage.
2:13 pm on December 16th, 2013
I’ve been snuggling Melanie all night. At some point Dawson made her way to the Quilt and I snuggled her, too. Tenzing warned me about playing cards with Dawson, so for now, I will continue to snuggle her until her heart feels better.
I was given my very own dog pillow last night. I’m still figuring out how it works. What I do know is nothing beats laying my head on my Lady’s lap.
2:21 pm on December 16th, 2013
We will have them make an elevator for us guys! I’ve always seen Mattie as an Elevator Person. Little hat . . give her a treat and she works.
Wyatt, thanks so much for the snuggle. I was amazed that you could get in-between me and the Newfs. That is the sign of an excellent snuggler.
Time to rest again. Doing better than the last two days.
2:32 pm on December 16th, 2013
Melainie FOR Sure! Mom loves water slides, but like others will require assistance to get to the top, and a ski lift seems like a fun way to do it.
Mmm, tacitos left from Sat nite party, excellent finger food lunch. If I had fingers.
2:54 pm on December 16th, 2013
Thought for the day.

2:56 pm on December 16th, 2013
Dawson — So sorry about your MIL; thoughts of prayer for you and your husband. Loss at any time is difficult, but even more so around the holidays.
2:58 pm on December 16th, 2013
Macy! You are making me Hungry!
3:04 pm on December 16th, 2013
Dawson, so sorry about your loss.
Many years ago a wedding announcement was posted on the bulletin board at work. There was a picture of a bride and the announcement had some words marked with highliter pen. Eileen forgot last name married Benjamin Dover. Seems fine.
So, Ben Dover is now married to Eileen Dover. What a hoot!
3:05 pm on December 16th, 2013
Hey everyone.
I had another play date on Saturday with my best gal Zeta. Some more photos to come. The first is me chasing Zeta.

3:06 pm on December 16th, 2013
And this is me and Zeta standing together.

3:07 pm on December 16th, 2013
And the last one is me in full flight.

3:13 pm on December 16th, 2013
Teddy, you sure know how to pick the ladies. And you are quite a looker yourself.
3:14 pm on December 16th, 2013
Teddy RR, you handsome dog you! You and Zeta make a lovely pair of non-hounds (like we are non-hounds). Wow, fun was had by both, better than a dog park!
3:16 pm on December 16th, 2013
Teddy RR: You and Zeta are having so much Fun!
3:27 pm on December 16th, 2013
Darah the darling decorating dozer here. I feel left out, different, inadequate. Pookey with only 3 legs kilt a rackety coon this spring. In the past 3 days, Lucy Lou has brought in a dead 1) vole, 2) baby wren, 3) mole. I’m more of a lover than a hunter (although I wouldn’t mind some sushi out of that pond). What’s a little newf to do?
3:50 pm on December 16th, 2013
Thanks Teddy RR! Glad you two were able to have another playdate.
Mom says the two of you together are beyond cute.
Zeta has lovely eyemakeup.
3:53 pm on December 16th, 2013
Those are some great shots, Teddy RR. You have good taste in woman, my boy!
All of a sudden the snow is coming down, just in time to mess up the rush hour. Good thing we are in for the day.
100 cookies baked so far today. About 20 more to go, so will have an even 10 doz. That is the end of our Christmas baking.
4:33 pm on December 16th, 2013
B&M: I’ve never had cookies before, but I’d be happy to help you taste test them, for quality assurance purposes, of course.
5:10 pm on December 16th, 2013
Wyatt, you must demand cookies as your retirement right. You didn’t get to touch the burled arch, so cookies must be had.
5:21 pm on December 16th, 2013
Melanie, could you please check with GLAD and see if she got the pictures of Gus that Mom emailed her? Mom bought one of her special pastels that she offered but when she sent the pics with a note, she got an error message from Yahoo about the text. She tried from her work computer and got the same message. Just want to make sure she got the pics. Thank you.
5:35 pm on December 16th, 2013
Barb says we are not going to eat the cookies. Evidently they are for her kids, some neighbors, the postman, wonderfluffer, and so on. Sounds crazy to me!
5:35 pm on December 16th, 2013
We started watching The Paradise today. We only watched the first episode, but so far we really like it. We remember some of you mentioning it when it was broadcast. Who has watched it?
5:48 pm on December 16th, 2013
Teddy is quite the little heartbreaker, isn’t he? And his girlfriend is no slouch either.
We are having a few post op issues with Callie. Pawsitive thoughts would be helpful.
5:50 pm on December 16th, 2013
And Darah- Newfs RESCUE. They don’t just small furry things.
Just ask Franklin. He “rescued” Zoe’s birthday cake from that dangerous counter.
5:51 pm on December 16th, 2013
Lots of smooches to Callie.
5:55 pm on December 16th, 2013
Dozens of dainty licks as needed, Callie. And Grandpa, too.
5:59 pm on December 16th, 2013
Good thoughts and prayers for Callie and Grandpa
6:12 pm on December 16th, 2013
Callie, we send you are very best, most pawsitive thoughts.
6:16 pm on December 16th, 2013
Callie, not quite sure how to be a pillow for long but am willing to try to learn. Pawsitive thoughts from the HOH.
6:23 pm on December 16th, 2013
Callie, pawsitive, loving thoughts coming to you.
6:25 pm on December 16th, 2013
Teddy, Zeta is very pretty and you are growing into the most handsome dog. The two of you make a fab couple!
And boy, can you run fast!
6:27 pm on December 16th, 2013
Holidays!…This Christmas season is stacking up just like last season – which was horrible…sniff!…Sorry for your loss Dawson. I hope you will not be too sad this Christmas….sniffle!….Which is worse, being sad or mad during the season to be jolly?…grunt!
6:33 pm on December 16th, 2013
BooBear, working on it. Just not sure is she is working right now. Have messages in to her!
Totally sill and Zoë and I have to watch it every year.
Ernest Saves Christmas
6:38 pm on December 16th, 2013
I think being mad is harder on your body and more stressful than being sad. Anger in harmful mentally and physically, so how can you minimize it? I know you can’t eliminate it!
6:38 pm on December 16th, 2013
purrs and hugs to Callie! Hang in there, girl!!!
6:43 pm on December 16th, 2013
Tonight for dinner we are having a small bacon wrapped fillet, Caesar salad, roasted Brussels sprouts with garlic, and sweet potato fries. We will share it with Callie if that will make her feel better.
7:06 pm on December 16th, 2013
Callie & Gramp: You are in our Thoughts and Prayers.
Sending Lots of Love.
7:09 pm on December 16th, 2013
Macy: Received your lovely card which was sent to the wrong address. Fortunately our carrier knows us well and re-directed it.
7:34 pm on December 16th, 2013
Sad!…My friend is more sad than mad…sniff!…She says she misses her grandma very much. Grandma told her to never ever move in with her mother…gruffle!…Someone here should have listened.
7:35 pm on December 16th, 2013
Post-Op!….What is wrong with Callie?…sniff!…I remember when Cassie The Butt Sniffing Dawg had post-op issues…wheeze!….What a nightmare.
7:57 pm on December 16th, 2013
So sorry to hear about your MIL, Dawson. You are in my heart. And so is the man who lives there.
7:58 pm on December 16th, 2013
Licks and prayers for my special friend Callie. I know you will pull through just fine.
8:05 pm on December 16th, 2013
I am trying to say this with a straight face, but it may not be possible. Both my boys art fired up with excitement because they are going to be on the Maury Provich show and are leaving on Friday. Snicker.
Neither Cody or Breena have Government Issued IDs. xnay on the lyingfay. And I can’t believe that that show will be in production next week. Still, mom has learned to be relatively supportive and let them learn on their own.
8:06 pm on December 16th, 2013
Thinking also of Callie and sending healing thoughts.
8:12 pm on December 16th, 2013
Oodgay orfay ooya, olfieway. You go girl!
8:24 pm on December 16th, 2013
Received Precious packages today from the Royal Mum and BooBear. Hurray!
8:49 pm on December 16th, 2013
Found a tardy Library Book. See youse tomorrow.

Rebecca!…If you are around and about, check your SDD…snort!…Then turn around and about and go your merry way!…heh!
9:11 pm on December 16th, 2013
We got our chickie hot pads! Mom is twining! Me? Meh
9:13 pm on December 16th, 2013
Kat!…I hear ya. Just more chickens lying around the house…sniff!
9:20 pm on December 16th, 2013
It took me an hour and a half to get ready for bed.
Had to get the house ready for the -1 degree tonight. That’s without the wind chill factor. If anyone wants to get ready for the big trip North blur on by.
Bluecat, heard from GLAD. Her mailbox is not full. Try replying to an older email of hers. If that doesn’t work send it to me (email with 2 last names) and I’ll try tomorrow.
Headed under the quilt. I think almost every will be there!
9:22 pm on December 16th, 2013
Melanie!…I am never under the Quilt..sniff!…I may be mad and sad at the same time like my friend, but I am never under the Quilt with some disease…grunt!
9:27 pm on December 16th, 2013
Thanks for the encouraging words to Callie and Gramp. They both feel better knowing the Plunderers have their backs.
Wolfie – we do love you. That’s all, pure and simple.
Rio – tell your friend to decide to be happy. The spirit of Christmas is one of joy, of hope, peace and goodwill. It us not a message of frenzied shopping and the “gimme” attitude of some unevolved troglodyites. It is a time to share and love and see the inner glow in ourselves as that brilliant star over Bethleham. We cannot make others be happy, but we can determine our own feelings and reverence and sing from the heart – JOY to the World.
9:32 pm on December 16th, 2013
Tupper!…sniff!…We here will try very hard, because you are so very right in what you say….wuffle!sniffle!…It is hard when one is living in the moment though…gruffle!
Meanwhile!…On a happier note, has anyone noticed how Teddy’s back legs are in front of his front legs when he is really zipping around…snort!…Amazing! No Pug could ever do this!
9:33 pm on December 16th, 2013
Melanie, Isn’t it Boobear who is trying to contact GLAD and not Bluecat, or are we confused?
9:38 pm on December 16th, 2013
Zeta!…Have you noticed that she has strange Eyes!…snort!heh!
9:42 pm on December 16th, 2013
Dawson, our condolences as well.
Which seems like a rotten time to also talk about names, except I just read through all of these posts.
Melanie didn’t want to keep her name. She also didn’t want me to take hers, which I would have totally done. She agrees that hyphenating is too much bother. So she’s also old-fashioned. Huh.
Lots of snow. They closed school. A thing that’s never done here. Ever.
Now I have to go look for all the other whats’ in a name posts.
9:44 pm on December 16th, 2013
Buddy!…Hi Bud, hope you are doing well…snorkel!…Stay out of the snow. It’s not good for anyone, you know…sniff!
9:56 pm on December 16th, 2013
Believe me Rio, I’m staying out of the snow as much as possible. They don’t call that stuff “blind man’s fog” for nothing, you know. Impossible. All the curbs are invisible. Well, covered, anyway. And everything sounds wrong, either far, far away or right on top of you. When between dogs once, I got lost in my neighborhood for like an hour. Wouldn’t happen with Leno though. Or with Chet before him. Karl retired shortly after we moved to Erie. Anyway, walking in the snow is lots easier with a dog, but still, I’d rather not if I don’t have to.
And. Umm. Wolfie? People…on the Maury show…on purpose? Oh dear. It, umm, at least doesn’t sound like a “Who’s really the father” show, which most of those seem to be, so that’s something. I guess let us know when and I’ll have to break my strict rule against watching that. Well, I geuss it isn’t Springer…wait….is he even still on? Never mind, at least it’s not him.
10:00 pm on December 16th, 2013
Springer!…Gah!…Trash TV….sniff!…We pride ourselves on never watching one episode of Springer or that other Maury Show….grunt!…Donahue was bad enough. Don’t get someone started on Merv Griffen….gasp!
10:20 pm on December 16th, 2013
Good night all. Sweet dreams, and D’day Liz.
10:21 pm on December 16th, 2013

Hey there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your content seem to be running off the screen in Chrome. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. The design look great though! Hope you get the issue resolved soon. Many thanks
