What’s In A Name?

Mrs. Publicist: Fifteenth of the month and time for What’s In A Name, where Peter Abrahams, aka Spencer Quinn, discusses a character name from the Chet and Bernie series. Here’s one I’ve been wondering about – Georgie Malhouf in THE DOG WHO KNEW TOO MUCH.

Pete: President of the Great Western Private Eye Association?

Mrs. P: Exactly. The one who offers Bernie five hundred bucks to give that memorable keynote speech at their convention.

Pete: Well, Georgie’s one of those characters we don’t know what to think of for a while, so I thought I’d give him a name to match. “Georgie” is a somewhat comic name for a grown man. Nothing to fear from a Georgie. But “Malhouf” has bad in it.

Mrs. P: Mal being bad in French?

Pete: Précisément! “Houf” reminds us of “hoof” – so bad foot, like – watch out, he kicks! That’s the side of Georgie we see more of as the story progresses. But the comic part never vanishes completely, and is still there at the end when Bernie makes him eat the –

Mrs. P: No spoilers! See you next month for another edition of What’s In A Name!

    Greetings!

RIO! First! What the heck are you doing up so early?

In keeping with “What’s In a Name”, I was supposed to be named Rosemary (because Rosemary Clooney was my dad’s favorite singer at the time), but the hospital where I was born filled out my birth certificate incorrectly. So instead of Rosemary, I became Rose (first name), Marie (middle name).

    A good day to all!

Another fascinating glimpse into the workings of OFA’s brain!
Now I will have to re-read the ending of The Dog Who Knew Too Much to find out what Bernie makes Georgie eat.

Rio: What are you doing up so early?!

I’m watching a bit of ice skating, a bit of hockey, some curling, luge, and skiing.

Mom is watching Olympic reruns the next day… curling, hockey, downhill and giant slalom. Why? The DDD and s-son seem to claim the TVs when the sun goes down.

Rio! You hit the nail on the head with the observation that the winner of Westminster didn’t project personality. That was my problem with him, too. I almost forgot he was even there.

    Good morning, all.

I can’t remember what Bernie makes Georgie eat either.

Thank you for that link Rose. “Rose of Mary”–very interesting. I used to grow the herb. It smells like a pine tree.

    Good morning all.

CHobbitz: Today in the mail I got a Christmas card returned that I had sent to you from Montana last December. It did not have a stamp on it! I wonder where it has been all this time.

I did have one other Christmas card returned. It was one I’d sent to the Fourhawks (it had a stamp on it) which is weird because I sent a small package a little later to the same address and it got through.

What an action-packed book. Now I remember what Bernie made Little Boy Badfoot eat. Heh, heh! Georgie was no match for Bernie!

What I appreciated about Biggie is that he got carried around like a football in some of the footage I saw. He is living the dream. My Lady refuses to carry me around under her arm. Grump!

Carried!…I have to think all Pugs get carried around like a football. All Pugs except me and Beau. I can’t stand being carried and Beau was altogether apposed to being lifted up in any way shape or form. Even though he does love football…heh!heh!
