What’s In A Name?

Mrs. Publicist: As promised, What’s In A Name, a little late, but here! What character name should we discuss, Spence?
SQ: I believe I saw a reader (from the reknowned Plunderer subset) question about Bernie’s Porsche, and the Porsche – actually 3 so far in the series – is a sort of character. The name was already in place, of course, but the big decision was to make the model not a brand new Carrera, but an old and dinged up relic.
Mrs. P: Because that tells us something about Bernie?
SQ: Either way it would, but brand new wouldn’t be him, even if he could afford it.
Mrs. P: And each one in the series is older and more dinged up than the last?
SQ: Exactly. Which opened the door for a mechanic in the stories – Nixon Panero.
Mrs. P: Who painted martini glasses on the body of the most recent one. Meaning C&B were sure to get pulled over. So that led to the role of the motorcycle cop, Fritzie Bortz?
SQ: You see how these things work! Should we go into Ferdinand Porsche’s Nazi past?
Mrs. P: Maybe not today. I’ll see you next month for more of What’s In A Name.

    Greetings!

    Wow, Spence is up early!

The heat and humidity are gone, and the next few days should be very pleasant here in this neck of the woods…Perfect for my visit to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. I also discovered the home that Humphrey Bogart lived in until he was 23 is not too far from the cathedral, so I plan to stop there.

Off to a wonder-fluffing appointment this morning.

    Good day to all!

Thanks, Spence for choosing my question!

Good morning, Wose and everyone! Really like the What’s in a Name? (especially without the facebookie add covering part of it) Wose, enjoy the wonderfluffing. Wish the temp and humidity here would break! Mom is getting ready for Toddler Tuesday,
Have a too-too tinsely Tuesday (especially for Belle).

The Wikipedia article on Ferdinand Porsche is very interesting. He also designed the Volkswagen which means “people’s car.”

And now for something completely different…

Loons. Diving. A minnow is eaten. Not for the minnow lovers. I love the bass guitar music.

BStover Why is a bass (fish) pronounced to rhyme with past and a bass (guitar) or (voice) to rhyme with base? grump.

I read the name segment yesterday. Always fun. I agree that Bernie wouldn’t drive a new Porsche, but why that make at all? Why not an old Mustang or another “muscle car”?

Have fun Rose. I am also going to get wonder-fluffed this morning.

Tomorrow it is back to work. I may be quitting. Boss guy still has not addressed the issue of more money since my work load is now double. This new guy said he would prefer not to talk to his clients, we should handle their calls. What? Isn’t he supposed to be their agent?

Good morning all. We are having a grand day barking and running in circles. Seems that there are some repair guys on our roof, fixing something called “flashing” All we know is – they hammer, we bark. They roof, and we woof.
    We are driving Mama crazy.

Barb – stand your ground. You are well within your rights, and if you leave, they will be in a tough position. Therefore…..

Then if the new guy still doesn’t cave you can retire again! I would plan to retire just before the nasty winter weather. LOL

BMAL: When I asked about Bernie’s car, I meant the question you posted…Why a Porsche? Why not a Gran Torino, a Grand Prix, a Mustang (like the one in the film “Bullitt”)?

As for work, they are lucky to have you…Do what makes you feel right.

Staff: Bass (the fish) is derived from Old English “baers.” (The “ae” is the ash and should be written as one letter but I don’t have that on my laptop keyboard.) It has a short “a” sound as in “ash.” It is also interesting that we have deleted the “r” sound just as we did in “arse. (The Old English word is derived from the German for perch, “barsch.”)

Bass (the sound) is derived from Middle English “base.” (It was derived from German “bass.”) During the Middle Ages, scribes put an “e” on the end of some words to indicate that the vowel was pronounced “long.” (Other examples are “not,” “note,” “hat,” “hate.”)

    Fun!

Word derivation is certainly lots more fun than listening to the political jibber jabber.

Porsches and VWs. Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche, son of the company’s founder, made the first Porsche-the 356. He also designed the Beetle. Both cars had a four-cylinder, air-cooled engine right at the back and they shared several parts.
We always said the Porsche is just a classy VW Bug.

The thing is, I did some checking around since John has procrastinated on talking about job issues. I am much closer to starting rates than those for experienced assistants. Also permanent p.t. employees are entitled to some vacation and sick time, usually about half what a full time person would get. I only get paid for time worked, period. I think John has a sweet deal and I am feeling under valued and under appreciated.

Unfortunately the company has created a problem with the young agents. They are assigned a “book of business” when they start, but are not paid for servicing it, only for business they write. Therefore, they are not overly inclined to spend much time talking to these assigned clients. One told me she had not met him in the 5 yrs he has been with the company!

She has soooo many family issues (daughter, pre-teen who is cutting herself and in therapy, mother in law in a psych ward, and on an on. There is so much dysfunction that she does not pay attention to her job.
