What’s In A Name?

Mrs. Publicist: Well, we’re a bit past the fifteenth of the month, but since we’re here, how about another episode of What’s In A Name – where Spence discusses a character name from the Chet and Bernie series. Can we do Shooter, Spence? Some readers asked.

Spencer Quinn: Why not? The moment Chet heard she-barking in DOG ON IT, Shooter’s existence was determined, even if I didn’t know it at the time. But grasping these possibilities is the novelist’s job.

Mrs. P: So at the end of DOG ON IT, when Chet jumps the gate at the back of their place on Mesquite Road … ?

SQ: Exactly. Although we don’t actually see the resulting puppy and learn his name until book 4, THE DOG WHO KNEW TOO MUCH. Shooter finally plays a big role in book 8, SCENTS AND SENSIBILITY.

Mrs. P: Those scenes where Chet is held captive and Shooter –

SQ: No spoilers! As for the name, you know I (along with C&B) like country music. The late Waylon Jennings, a great country singer and a member of the outlaw faction (along with Willie and Merle), named his son Shooter. I liked that outlaw part – the fact that it’s an in-your-face type of name. The character was all laid out for me right there.

Mrs. P: Thanks, Spence. See you June 15 for another episode of What’s In A Name!

Shooter…what a great name! I always enjoy the “What’s In a Name” posts.

RIO! I was reading your posts from last night. Windows 10 will never be spoken in our house again. About 2 months ago, The Prof’s computer was hijacked by that nasty program, and completely disabled his laptop.

Cost to repair laptop: Several hours on the phone with Microsoft and $150. What many people do not realize about Microsoft is that when these updates are pushed through, they have not been tested by Microsoft, so we, the users, become the guinea pigs for an unwanted update with all the bugs and problems that come with it.

    Stepping off my soapbox…

    Create a good day!

    Good morning everyone.
Yup, Shooter is kinda cool for a name. Mind you it isn’t on the same level as Tuppence, or GillyFlower, but it’s not bad.

MUCH better than, let’s say, Basil. Or Sage. Those are stupid names. Therefore…..

Good morning! We here loved Waylon (and Willie and The Boys). So therefore, Shooter is one cool dude.
We stil prefer the name Dima. Just sayin’.
Windows 10 works just fine for us.

I am glad Chet helped create Shooter; however, Bernie is not being being 100% responsible. Wonder if he is one of those guys who covers a part of his anatomy when the vet mentions neutering? Any thoughts?

Cold here, AGAIN. Did I mention that I am sick of this weather? Now off to get wonderfluffed.

Good day all. Cool and cloudy here.
Waylon Jennings named his son Waylon Albright but called him Shooter. Waylon, by the way, had six children via four wives.

Thanks for those who recommended Shooter for the What’s in a Name posting. An interesting explanation for the choice and it got me listening to Waylon Jennings songs all morning which means there is no time for painting the fence before my afternoon cribbage games.

Tupper and Gilly: Thanks for posting the happy picture of your Mum and Bobbi in green chile land.

Banned! And well she should be…anyone who would return not 1, not 2, but 3 kats…as if they were items to be casually disposed of…then proceed to a shelter to adopt another, is a miserable excuse for a human being.

Good afternoon all! Mom just got home from toddler Tuesday. She ran into a friend (90 years old and still lives on her own). She is frightened as she was just diagnosed with cancer in one eye. I asked if she would like to be remembered in pawrayer when she goes to the doctor tomorrow. Mom said she got a huge hug and a loud, “YES!”. Please y’all, at 11 a.m. EDT tomorrow, put Fran in your prayers.
We think Shooter is a cool name and loves that he lives with Charlie now ๐Ÿ™‚

Masquers, we have heard of people who go to another town for the summer, rent a house/cabin and adopt a dog. In September when they go home, they just leave the “summer dog” behind. Disgusting! People who return or leave adoptees should be treated the same!

T&G’s maw looks fantastic! So does Bobbi.
We are furious with that monster who turned in her adopted kittens who are now adults. Thank Dog she is banned from any more adoptions.
HOH,we will think of Fran at 11am tomorrow.

I just talked to someone last week who had had cancer in her eye. She was about to go to Florida to receive her final “A-ok.” Evidently it is one of the curable kinds especially if caught early.

We will keep Fran in our thoughts. Cancer most definitely is scary!

T & G, Your mama looks fantastic. Look how slim and trim she is! Impressive! And her friend looks very nice.

People who leave their pets behind are disgusting. David Rosenfelt talks about people doing this in southern Cal. He and his wife were at a shelter when someone came in with his son and dropped off their old dog, then wen to the back to pick out a puppy. What a horrible lesson for that kid- animals are disposable. Rosenfelt and his wife took the old dog home.

If someone wants a dog just for the summer, why not sign up with a foster agency that needs to place a dog short term?
Otherwise – get a Beanie Baby and leave the live dogs and cats alone!

Fran will be in our prayer tonight.

http://nature365.tv/may-17-2016/ Marsh marigolds. Many years ago when I was first taking birding classes at the U of Minnesota we went “up north” to a bog for a little birding. That is when I first me the marsh marigold. A lovely plant and one of the very first to bloom.

I have spent many hours the last 5 days trying to get my new cell phone up and running with my old phone number. Finally done but I have very little idea how to use it. Heh. I couldn’t even answer the phone. Mr.Staff kindly phoned me so I could practice. Yeep.

Now all I have to do us put all my phone numbers in it. My old phone was not smart enough to transfer them…grump.
