What’s In A Name?
Ms. Publicist: Fifteenth of the month and therefore time for What’s In A Name, where Spence discusses a character name from the Chet and Bernie series.
Spencer Quinn: How about a corporate name, actually two of them, from Paw and Order (coming Aug. 5)?
Ms. P: Shoot.
SQ: Here are two that play a role in the story – Terrapin Exports and Preakness Development.
Ms. P: Do I catch Maryland references?
SQ: You do! But when Bernie makes a comment very like the one you just did, a certain character – who should be able to make the same connection – does not.
Ms. P: And that becomes a clue?
SQ: There are all sorts of ways to sprinkle clues in a mystery.
Ms. P: Sounds like fun! See you next month for another round of What’s In A Name! Maybe we can do Barnum, also from Paw and Order.
SQ: You got it!
Welcome Stitch and Wilbur.

Did I just say and moi? I mean the Plunderers, of course!
Cannot Wait for August 5th! Plunder On until then!

Good morning, BSD and everyone! Big storm here last night but never fear, we held down the g-son while he laughed and laughed. Terrapin Exports and 2 friends of the turtle persuasion…almost fishy that one. Mom is getting ready to go to the Library with the g-son.
Have a finely tuned Tuesday.

Storms for the HOH & Howlers…Polar Vortex for B&M.

Aug. 5th can’t come soon enough! Hum, something to do with turtles?
HOH, have fun with the Grand. They can tire you out!
Staff, that is basically the way we did our beans, but maybe next time we will try the mushrooms and onions added in, like Howlers did. Your beans are a big hit around here. Many thanks.
Now off to the salt mines. Taking homemade chicken salad, cottage cheese with chives and a tomato to share with the big boss.
8:56 am on July 15th, 2014
Greetings!
Another tropic-like day here in our neck of the woods! Ick!
I will have to wait for Rio or Siber-H to tell me who won the Home Run Derby.
Derek Jeter will be the lead-off batter for the American League. His last All Star game. sniff sniff SOB
I cannot believe this is the Captain’s last season. Twenty years with the same team! Wish I could be at his last Yankee Stadium game.. sniff sniff SOB SOB
In between all this crumpled Kleenex, I am thinking that with all this baseball talk, there has not been much pie making for HRH, B. Too much reading with Charley on the easy chair. Let’s see…..Cherry, Key Lime, Chocolate Cream, Blueberry….
I think a rescue team must be sent to find my VBFF forever. I hope she sent a sparkly trail.
9:01 am on July 15th, 2014
Staff, read your post from the wee hours of the morn as you sat under the cheetah throw. We believe that our mom won that throw and now we are just waiting.
9:09 am on July 15th, 2014
Good morning! It is still raining Kats and Zeuses here today.

Maryland connection? Hey! I have one of those. Did I miss a clue?
9:32 am on July 15th, 2014
Oh, Kat! That is my most favorite picture of you!
9:40 am on July 15th, 2014
Polar vortex may have lost a little of its punch by the time it reached the Lone Star State, but any break in the heat is welcome in July, and the rain is nice too. I was going to mow the back 40 this morning, but as they say, it was too wet to plow, so I trimmed a little cleaned a little, weeded a little, collapsed a lot.
Tomorrow I start the Texas branch of Rose’s summer camp. Should I pack sunscreen? Probably not.
10:00 am on July 15th, 2014
Heh Heh! Wose, I knew you would love seeing me on that boat on the Chesapeake Ocean again.
10:03 am on July 15th, 2014
ML – aww, what a shame that it is too wet to now the lawn. So, are you ready for camp? Do you have name tags sewn into all your underwear?
Glad you are taking this time for yourself. And all paws crossed that you find peace, calm and solace at camp.
10:23 am on July 15th, 2014
Maryland!…I don’t get the whole Maryland connection in the Whats in a Name bit…grump!…Heck he didn’t explain anything in that post…sniff!
10:34 am on July 15th, 2014
Kat! Sailing on the bay.
Riö: Me too…haven’t a clue.
10:34 am on July 15th, 2014
The lovely picture of purple iris arrived in great shape. Thanks Karen and Boo Bear.
I will get a picture of it and one of the lovely brass plaque that our friend Tom had made for Melanie’ s bench.
Could you guys blurr to the celebration? Zoe
10:44 am on July 15th, 2014
Rio – terrapins is the name of the Unniversity of Maryland football team. And the Preakness is run in Maryland.
Sounds to us like there are some shell( no pun intended) corporations involved.
Hmmm – August 5th will tell

Where’s Professor Emeritus Bee this morning?
10:52 am on July 15th, 2014
T&G: I think she and Charlie are wrapped in a blanket this morning, having a cuppa tea and reading from their favorite book.
Zoë: Of course we can blurr to the celebration!
I can see it now…a plethora of plunderers all around you.
10:57 am on July 15th, 2014
Zoe: Mattie long ago taught me her Teleportation Technique so Bear will most definitely be there, along with the rest of the Plunderer Pack.

Have to go make me some breakfast now. Youse guys play safe. And HOH if you tell me you have sent your moola to Snowhook I will put that lovely Cheeta throw in a box and mail it out.
BBL
Quilting tonight!
11:00 am on July 15th, 2014
This reminds me of the Preakness Stakes (thoroughbred horse race). I wonder why the character couldn’t make the Maryland connection. Perhaps an impostor in disguise! This is going to be fun!
T&G: I’ve been gardening. It’s a lovely 69 here with sun and big fluffy clouds. I have the windows open.
Rose: It looks like I’d better start baking!
Good morning all.
11:05 am on July 15th, 2014
Zoe: I will be on the road visiting my late m-i-l’s partner but will definitely take some time to blur on over. What time should I plan on being there?
T&G: Thanks for explaining the Maryland connection.
I’m not sure how I’m going to order a signed Paw and Order. I just hope some bookstore will send it to Canada with no goats involved.
We are sweltering up here. Humidity and all!
11:05 am on July 15th, 2014
B: You’re late. Please disregard that last SDD.
btw: The second season of Elementary is looking very good. Some new characters are being introduced.
Thanks for the link, Staff. If I ever have to write a letter to BSD…..
11:08 am on July 15th, 2014
Dawson: Never Fear. BSD is on the case. Signed copy of Paw And Order coming up! (soon)
Wose: Thank Dog you reminded Prof. B about the Pie!
11:10 am on July 15th, 2014
Bee – so that Polar Vortex did get to you. As much as we love summer, 69 degrees sounds lovely to us right about now. As it is, we are living in a tropical rainforest – hot, thick humidity with bouts of downpours.
But you should see our zucchini plant! It is loving this, and just for fun, we are letting it do what it wants. It is now over 20 feet from the furthest blossom back to the main plant body. We have counted over two dozen blossoms. And that is just so far.
Shades of Little Shop of Horrors. tee hee
11:14 am on July 15th, 2014
Tupper&Gilly: Careful! Those Zucchini and Pumpkin plants will take over the garden if you let them. Little Shop of Horrors indeed.
11:30 am on July 15th, 2014
Kat is making me laugh. (Sorry.) How is your ark?
Masquers: I’m going to catch up on Elementary tonight.
Rio: I caught up on Murder in the First. I can’t decide whether the Tom Felton character is innocent or guilty. He’s a bully of a different sort but as with the Potter films, there is something pathetic about him. (I think he sent the video to Wilkerson’s wife. Also, since he is a computer wiz, perhaps he somehow “wrote” the suicide note found on Mark’s laptop.)
11:55 am on July 15th, 2014
Bee, The ark is coming along nicely. I am planning to sail it on the brand spanking new Oley River.
Grump
12:18 pm on July 15th, 2014
Zöe, my momma was supposed to drive me me me up to your celebration, but she said that date is booked by something important to the rest of my family. So I will just have to use my blurring skills, and I hope I can locate those mountains.

Zoe, Abbie, Staff and I have plans to be there. 2 p.m. Eastern is 1:00 our time. We will be on time. This is our virtual veggie contribution. Gluten free as requested. It is also in the Chet the Dog Dishlickers cookbook.
Vallie’s Potpourri Veggie Salad
Mr. Staff’s cousin Vallie was known far and wide as a great cook. This is one of her recipes. It is like a 3 bean salad on steroids. It keeps for several weeks in the fridge and serves 15. Great for Potluck or Church socials. You will get asked for the recipe.
1-1/2 Cups white vinegar
1 Cup salad oil
2 Cups granulated sugar
6 teaspoons salt
Boil syrup until clear and no longer grainy. Cool.
While syrup is cooling cut up veggies:
1 small head cauliflower cut into small pieces
3 raw carrots, shredded
1 Cup celery, sliced
1 Large Onion, diced small
1- 2 oz. jar pimento’s, drained and chopped
1 can garbanzo beans, drained
1 can sliced water chestnuts, drained, cut in half if large
1 can WHITE corn. (Vallie was firm about WHITE corn)
1 pkg frozen french cut green beans (Vallie was firm about french cut) (canned not nearly as good)
Pour sauce over veggies and refrigerate for 24 hours before serving. I usually put it in an ice cream pail for storage. They have good lids. If it gets eaten up too fast just add more veggies for tomorrow.
12:50 pm on July 15th, 2014
Note, I can’t always find white corn so I use the white/yellow corn in a can. I wonder if I can find some frozen white corn these days? I haven’t made this for several years. I am getting hungry for it NOW!
1:19 pm on July 15th, 2014
Good morning all. Thanks for the recipe, it sounds great.
The bruising on my back and butt are downright amazing. If I was a teen, I am sure I would be taking selfies and posting them but I will spare all of youse. Trust me when I say that it is spectacular (the bruising, not the butt). heh
1:44 pm on July 15th, 2014
C.Hobbit: All we can say is Ouch! and you have our Sympathy.
1:51 pm on July 15th, 2014
Staff: Cousin Vallie’s Recipe looks Yummy.
But Nana saw “sugar” & “salt” as two of the ingredients she has vowed to avoid and is wondering if these can be omitted.
Or will this ruin the recipe? Can she use Stevia & a tiny amount of Sea Salt instead?
1:52 pm on July 15th, 2014
Sorry, Alice. I now see it was you posting (minus your avatar).
2:01 pm on July 15th, 2014
No Bear, I don’t think it would be as good if you eliminated the sugar and salt. Stevia? Maybe. And remember you don’t usually drink the sauce. Drain it well as you take your serving and most of the sugar/salt will stay with the water in the container. That is what I tell myself as I eat it. However I must admit I haven’t indulged in it since I had to be careful of my salt intake. grump.
I usually end up using lots more veggies than the recipe says and so I figure it gets even more diluted. cough cough cough
2:02 pm on July 15th, 2014
Home again, home again…40 toddlers invaded the library today. WE love ’em fricasseed, broasted, b-b-qed, on toast points…. Mom is ready for a nap BUT g-son has Lego building in mind so I have another skill to add to my résumé 🙁 🙂
Love the looks of the recipe for pickled veggies, very similar to our marinated ‘maters.
2:18 pm on July 15th, 2014
Good recipes, blur on over any time after 2 PM..
2:28 pm on July 15th, 2014
Alice&Abbie: Please tell Staff her package has been wrapped securely, but not too neatly (unfortunately Bear’s big paws aren’t made for these kind of tasks) and is in a sturdy box ready to fly off to that state in which Far-Go is a city of some renown.
Thanks, Zoë! We will be blurring in around two-ish with food & grog.

Thanks Zoe, I’ll be there with bells on!
The contents of the shed are strewn all over the back yard. The shed has been hosed out and is drying. I’m hot and hangry! I’m turning my back on the whole mess – going to play cribbage…or should I have a nap?
3:31 pm on July 15th, 2014
Boarder in the basement just called from WY to say he doesn’t think he can’t take Blondie on the road 🙂 Wowser we say! Blondie is officially a member of the HOH 🙂 Twirls, wags and howls.
3:38 pm on July 15th, 2014
Hounds: Great News about Blondie! (she never did seem like a truck’n dog.)
Dawson: Someone here is doing the same…Turning-Her-Back-on-the- Mess and taking a nap instead.
3:39 pm on July 15th, 2014
Where’s that Siber? He’s late to the blog.
3:40 pm on July 15th, 2014
Our mom is excited but exhausted and thinks a nap sounds grrreat!
3:52 pm on July 15th, 2014
Wose, Yoenis Cespedes won the Home Run Derby.
I know you are sad about Derek Jeter. I would be too.
It rained so my internet went down about the time the Home Run Derby started.
I’m with Rio…I don’t get today’s post by Spence. My brain could be fogged with humidity. gah
3:56 pm on July 15th, 2014
Hi Masquers, They really did get the internet fixed quickly this time. I am surprised.
I’m driving my old, borrowed Porsche to Zoe’s house. Rio can ride with me if he contributes gas money.

Road trip!
5:04 pm on July 15th, 2014
Gah. I just posted on a blog from the past by mistake.
a real faux paw, so to speak.
5:18 pm on July 15th, 2014
Hello All–I was catching up and am now something of a wreck from the Ikette emotional roller-coaster. (I was hopeful, then excited, now feeling strangely lonely…)
I hope you’ve all been having a better week than I have, although it sounds like several of you have had significant challenges, so know that you (and various HH members) are in my prayers.
On the bright side, we succeeded in shaving under Conan’s tail (although not without a struggle).
BSD–Was it A Dog’s Purpose?
C. Hobbit–You have probably burned enough karma lately for the rest of the decade (not much comfort, I know, but something). I hope your troubles are all behind you.
5:21 pm on July 15th, 2014
Thanks you for the info, Siber-H!
5:23 pm on July 15th, 2014
ML: Good luck at summer camp. My good thoughts are always with you.
5:58 pm on July 15th, 2014
Hello, Diane. We have been Wondering Where You Were.
And…Thank You…Yes, it is A Dog’s Purpose. Nana liked the book and wanted to send it to her sister in Montana but couldn’t remember the name.
7:41 pm on July 15th, 2014
Back home and starving to pieces, as they say. So a burger is being cooked as we speak.
Here is a picture of Lily that Kelly sent over today. That girl LOVES her horse! Isn’t that a picture of total contentment?

Sorry, it is right side up in our file!
7:43 pm on July 15th, 2014
I just clicked on the picture to enlarge it and it turned right side up!

So, what do we do? You tell us.
7:19 am on July 16th, 2014
WE love love love that picture of Lily and her Iowa. Now Mom wants to get right on her Annie. Unfortunately, there are bills to pay, and mouths (ours) to feed, so she will get on her work instead. Hah!
