What’s In A Name?
Ms. Publicist: Way past the fifteenth of the month so we’re overdue for What’s In A Name – where Spencer Quinn discusses a character name from the Chet and Bernie series. Spence, what about Nixon Panero, the auto mechanic who keeps those old beat-up Porsches on the road?
Spencer Quinn: And at some point in the past was busted by Chet and Bernie. First, I liked the contrast between prename and surname, two cultures coming uncomfortably together. I liked the sound, too – the blunt Anglo-Saxon Nixon with the melodic Latin-derived Panero.
Ms. P: You could have chosen many blunt Anglo-Saxon names. Why Nixon?
SQ: I believe it’s in A Fistful of Collars where Bernie guesses that Nixon was not exactly a wanted child.
Ms. P: Thanks, Spence! See you next month!

Good morning, everyone! What’s in a name, at long last. Like Nixon the character and his evolution in the books.
Have a springing in to summer Saturday 🙂
9:51 am on May 17th, 2014
See previous day. Macy first. Sharon, how did you like my “haiku”?
10:02 am on May 17th, 2014
ML, you are so creative and will never let mom live down her fear of tunnels. But a good haiku none the less.
10:13 am on May 17th, 2014
ML – good luck on the weeding out and cleaning up.
We here are trying to get some more work done on the raised beds. Today it is prepping the ground where the beds will be sitting and making a path so we can go all around the beds without stepping in mud.
One step at a time.
Our quest over the weekend was another sewing machine collector. I had a great time showing off my machines. Now that she is gone I am having a great time eating the raspberry jam and the homemade maple syrup she brought as a gift. Today we had french toast so we could have her maple syrup on it. Delish!
10:15 am on May 17th, 2014
“…the blunt Anglo-Saxon Nixon with the melodic Latin-derived Panero.”
Interesting.
Good morning all.
10:17 am on May 17th, 2014
Oh, Sharon, forgive me. I would never make light of someone’s phobia. Oh wait, yes I did. Mea Culpa. Mine is scorpions, feel free not to send me one.
Oh Staff what a bounty!
Now I have a guy coming over to look at Rick’s tools and knives. Life is getting interesting over here. And if Annie does not stop scratching the metal door, I am going to trim her claws up past her knees.
10:27 am on May 17th, 2014
Good morning all. We always think of the ex-Pres when we hear Nixon. We don’t remember reading that Nixon P. was an unwanted child.
Finally some decent weather here, 60 for a high, but at least it is improving. A hungry bunny cut the new Kitty Willow down from 3′ high to about 18″. Didn’t eat the branches, just cut them off and left them lying on the ground. Now some plastic fence, before it gets even shorter.
ML, is the buyer interested in your entire stock? Hope he makes a decent offer.
Lawn mower still is not fixed here. Josh has been back and forth to the lawn & tractor store trying to get it working. Have a feeling a new mower is in our near future. Shouldn’t a pull cord be an easy fix?
10:45 am on May 17th, 2014
Good Morning.
Thank You, Spence & Admin for catching up on the names. Nixon is a Favorite Character.
Staff: Maple Syrup & French Toast? Yum!
Barb&Magpie: How old is the mower?
Macy’s Mom: Good luck with the sorting and paws crossed for good offers.
10:52 am on May 17th, 2014
Good morning all–I like Nixon Panero’s surprising depths (e.g. the film buff side), although I wish he’d get over the tobacco thing.
Apprehension about tunnels is simple good sense, but I’ll have to go look at that haiku.
Everyone, keep cool and be well.
10:55 am on May 17th, 2014
We were up very late
But missed the haiku on the blog
Reading a scary Stephen King
11:16 am on May 17th, 2014
Whoa! Not one, but many haiku!
Three picky dogs here.
Disdaining wholesome kibble,
Hoping for chew treats.
When kibble is gone
Chew treats will be provided.
Saturday again.
11:18 am on May 17th, 2014
Good one, DianeC!
11:31 am on May 17th, 2014
We like haiku too
But we prefer fresh catnip
Rolling in green bliss.
See, Kats can play with the Big Dogs. HA!
ML – could you put boots on Annie’s front paws? We will hope for a good offer too.
Today is lovely weather. Birds singing everywhere, the chorus of chirps, twitters, and whistles far preferable to the normal Saturday sounds of lawnmowers and blowers. We think this calls for an afternoon of sunbathing.
11:45 am on May 17th, 2014
Greetings!
Who knew there were so many poets on this here blog!
12:06 pm on May 17th, 2014
Rose:
Unfortunately
This poet does not have haiku
Rhymes quite right, not yet
12:19 pm on May 17th, 2014
We refuse to try
Haiku is not our forte
Will be back later
Rose,we got another birthday request from you. Did you update some thing-a ma-gig again?
12:36 pm on May 17th, 2014
Now where are Riö, Howlers?
12:51 pm on May 17th, 2014
One of the better birthday reminder websites is Birthday Alarm dot com, which offers e-cards too.
We here have used it for years.
1:06 pm on May 17th, 2014
Gag! Have we missed someone’s b-day?
1:21 pm on May 17th, 2014
HOH: Not that we know of……
1:53 pm on May 17th, 2014
Good Afternoon
We are not doing Haiku, but we are working on the AC (swamp cooler) today.
1:55 pm on May 17th, 2014
Oh, maybe it is that auto matonic sign up announcement that was e mailed!
4:09 pm on May 17th, 2014
Masquers–Thanks.
Basil and Sage and Barb and Maggie–Really nice!
This is total fun. I hope to see more later.
AC/swamp cooler is that thing you pour water into, right? (Anyway, good luck with it.)
4:10 pm on May 17th, 2014
Wait–I forgot to ask: any news about the Meashka/Zeusikov situation since yesterday?
4:22 pm on May 17th, 2014
Diane: No News is Good News?
4:31 pm on May 17th, 2014
Put on to-do list: Re-read A Fistful of Collars to see if that really is where “Bernie guesses that Nixon was not a wanted child.”
Very nice weekend, tempting us to plant, plant, plant the garden.
Love all your haikus – seems that occasionally the blog breaks out in haiku.
Reading the Zeusikov/Meashka/Kat saga with great interest.
4:53 pm on May 17th, 2014
HOH, No you didn’t miss anyone’s b-day. We were commenting that we received another of those requests from Rose asking when our b-days were. Remember when everyone was getting them about 2 weeks ago?
BSD, No idea what the age of the mower is. Josh had it for a few years, then gave it to us last year to cut the grass. I bet it is 5-6 years old at least. It worked fine till the pull cord broke off. Who knew it would be so involved to replace a piece of rope!
5:14 pm on May 17th, 2014
B&M, GAH! I am sorry that my mistake is causing so many problems. Please delete the message.
Anyone else who gets that message DELETE!
5:17 pm on May 17th, 2014
Wolfie Wigglebutt is one of Chet’s Friends 🙂 B&M, yep we got that spam/email after the comments began. We remember mom reading something about Nixon being the last in a long line of children…maybe an “oops”.

5:40 pm on May 17th, 2014
The swamp cooler is now working. I may live, after all.
Diane, The water is automatically pumped into the swamp cooler with a little pump. Once they are up and running for the season, all mom has to do is flip switches in the house to turn it on and off. They do a great job of cooling the house because the humidity is so low here.
Wose, you aren’t causing any problems. It takes but a second to hit the delete button.
5:47 pm on May 17th, 2014
Agreed, Rose, it isn’t any problem. We were just wondering if you updated something again that caused it. We got an Link update on you yesterday, I think. Maybe that did it.
6:31 pm on May 17th, 2014
I wish we had a cooler for the swamp. Something that turns the humidity into cool air and yard water. That would be the ticket.
Another morning of working on The Man Cave. Made some progress, and the girl who was helping me took a bunch of CDs off my hands. The tool guy, my friend Tommy, mostly told me you can’t have too many tools. Thanks Tommy, but yes, yes you can, especially screwdrivers. Gah, they are everywhere.
I envy those of you who go out at night and do interesting things. I have not gotten the hang of it yet. Only 5:30 and I am counting the hours until bed, sigh. I think I need to take a tour of the country, hitting all the high spots, such as Massachusetts, Washington, Tennessee, Colorado, New Mexico, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, North Dakota, and…everywhere. Sorry Dawson, no passport.
6:32 pm on May 17th, 2014
Oops, that was not Macy.
6:37 pm on May 17th, 2014

8:51 pm on May 17th, 2014

Hello everyone! We have been busy busy busy. This morning, Pop had a trainer work with Ned and him. Then the ‘rents went shopping, and Mom bought SHEWS SHEWS SHEWs. She is tired of her feet always aching, so she got some super comfortable shews at out friends’ health food and shew store. Later, Mom went to our pork and chicken guy for … Wait for it … Pork and chicken. Then she came home and rode Annie. It was Zeus’ first big test without a leash, and he was very good.
Last night’s Wordplay and Michael Ronstadt concert was wonderful, and Zeus and the Reds were very good in the house. Zeus likes being kept inside. Go figure.
10:05 pm on May 17th, 2014
Oh, and they had fresh-picked lettuce from the garden with the ‘shroom burgers.

Barb and Mags, we are pretty sure you are in IL right? Oh, MPM, I knew we were leaving off someone important. Just add NY to the list and that will cover Rose too. Macy is washing her collar in prep for the big trip. Nobody tell her it is a virtual tour.
It is finally late enough to go to bed. Niters.
