What’s Cookin’?
“Audrey’s hearing is amazing,” Spence says. “But I’m not so sure about her sense of smell.”
“Oh?” says Admin.
“This morning when she went out she spotted a red-tailed hawk over by that leaf pile – “
“The leaf pile you didn’t finish clearing in the fall?”
“Do you want to hear this or not?”
“Don’t be so touchy.”
“Me? That’s a good one.”
“Go on.”
“And Audrey went charging over and the hawk flew off, but kind of reluctantly, I thought, so I looked in the leaf pile – Audrey’s sitting right beside it at this point – and there’s a dead squirrel with blood on its throat. She never noticed.”
“What did you do with the squirrel?”
“I was thinking of a stew.”
Welcome to Watson, Toby, Sundance.

Hi Audrey, you are looking good. And have good taste.
Spence on the other hand?
Stew? Are you procrastinating on that last chapter?
Also . . . the same state and no snow on the ground. Sigh. We still have two feet and that’s after a lot of melting.

Watson, Toby and Sundance . . .
FYI, Watson’s friend, Sherlock Holmes, used a dog named Toby in The Sign of the Four. Just finished reading that a week or two ago.
Don’t know how the Sandance comes in though . . .

Ugh!
Good morning Melanie – up early doing your exercises?
9:32 am on February 18th, 2011
Melanie: That was such a sweet lullaby you sent to Rio last night. I slept like a log.
Forgot to plug the car in but luckily it started anyway. -20 (F).
10:04 am on February 18th, 2011
Jeez Dawson, that is cold. Glad your car started anyway. What kind of car is it?
Yes, I have done the first set of the exercises. I have to do them 2 more times today.

Ewwwwwwww! Audrey may be ignoring that squirrel for a reason.
Good morning all. Bright and sunny here and 48…feels like spring.
10:17 am on February 18th, 2011
Good morning everyone. Wowy zowy +9 this morning. Supposed to snow heavily for the next 3 days. I have kind of given up on shoveling my driveway this last month so it could get interesting.
All my dogs through the years have fanatically hunted squirrels as we’ve walked through the woods. I think they hate how they chatter at them.
10:31 am on February 18th, 2011
The road is pretty clear. Our driveways are ice rinks.
Zoë took Ellie for a walk to see the horses down the street, when a Goldie, coming the other way, barked at Ellie. Ellie is as deaf as a post, but she knew he was barking at her. She just acted like a NYC lady getting wolf whistled on the street.
She was pleased, but hid it!
10:56 am on February 18th, 2011
That’s funny Melanie. Good for Ellie!

Good afternoon, y’all! I’ve never had squirrel stew — but I’m sure I’d like one of those bushy-tailed critters in a stew much better than in a tree! The only squirrel I’ve ever liked was the one who used to live in my house, but Mom and Dad would never let me play with him — not sure why!
12:50 pm on February 18th, 2011
Stew!… Oh no! Please tell me that wasn’t Rockie the Undercover Squirrel in Spencer’s yard….yeep!…He was sent there to do some reconnaissance work before the next mission takes place….gulp! …Audrey may have recognized Rockie and left his little body alone….sob!…I’ll know more after I confer with Agent Wookie…snort!
1:16 pm on February 18th, 2011
That would explain why Audrey didn’t roll on the dead squirrel.
That is a cute photo of Audrey. She looks very happy.
1:22 pm on February 18th, 2011
I don’t know, Rio. Rockie is pretty resourceful — I’m not sure anything, even a red-tailed hawk, would be able to get him! Don’t panic yet. Maybe Audrey knew the squirrel was there, but Spence dragged her away before she had a chance to determine who it was.
1:27 pm on February 18th, 2011
Kirby T.: We occasionally have a red squirrel living in the attic of the West Wing. That’s okay with us, not terrific but he’s a great deal nicer than that rats that lived in here when we first moved in.
By the way. I can just see you running around and around and around after that squirrel.
1:38 pm on February 18th, 2011
Melanie: I didn’t get to run around after him too much. Mom and Dad would let me — and the other dogs and kats — stay in the living room until Taz came out of his cage at night. (By the way, that cage was for his protection because the door was always open — the door was just too small for anyone else — such as dogs and kats — to get in.) When he came out they’d shoo us out of the living room and close all the doors. Sometimes they wouldn’t realize he was out right away — I came close to getting him a couple times, but Mom and Dad always rescued Taz in time. I don’t know what they were worried about — like I said, I just wanted to play with him!!!
1:49 pm on February 18th, 2011
If it is Rocky, his remains would be pickled. That would keep any self-respecting dog like Audrey away.

A Pet Squirrel!
Ohhhh. . .
2:05 pm on February 18th, 2011
Pickled!…heh!snort!heh!….Do you mean because of all the hillbilly liquor he has consumed over the years?….snort!….You may have a point there….sniff! … Agent Wookie will help me get to the bottom of this Squirrel Stew mystery….snuff!…I sure hope it wasn’t Rockie though. He
was is one of my best undercover agents…..wheeze!2:08 pm on February 18th, 2011
Oops!….snort!…I meant to write: He
wasis one of my best undercover agents…..wheeze!2:25 pm on February 18th, 2011
yes, Rio…white lightening can’t be beat as a preservative, and Rocky has drank more than his fair share of it. This could explain why the hawk flew off…one taste, barf
We had better locate Agent Wookie.
It might make for some very tasty squirrel stew, though

Report to Commander Rio
From: Secret Agrent 00WOOKIE
I think Rockie is far too clever to be killed and snacked on by a hawk and then wind up in a stew. I have been in contact with Audrey but, because of her poor sense of smell, she doesn’t know for sure if it was Rockie or not. All that she can confirm is that he was not wearing his standard-issue undercover outfit. She had tried to play dumb and ignore the body so Spence wouldn’t find it but, as that didn’t work, there are no remains now left to make a positive id. Also sounds like somebody may be having Brunswick stew for dinner tonight. (I prefer mine al dente.) Will hopefully hear from Rockie soon that he is okay.
3:04 pm on February 18th, 2011
Unbelievable!….I can’t believe the guy got off so easily….snort!…. At least he wasn’t treated very well in jail…..heh!…A little consolation for that poor Kats ordeal . I can’t wait till Liz reads about this!….sniff!
3:15 pm on February 18th, 2011
Wookie!….Too bad about Audrey’s poor sense of smell. Now we still don’t know if that is Rockie Stew spiced up with a hint of white lightning or not….grunt! … One encouraging bit of information is the dead squirrel was not wearing a disguise. I’m quite certain Rockie would be undercover at all times while
sneaking around and spyinger, canvassing the Quinn grounds….snort!3:21 pm on February 18th, 2011
People that are charged with animal cruelty more often than not get off easy. This is just one more example of that, and it needs to change.
3:24 pm on February 18th, 2011
Spence,
Hawks have to eat too. And if it was reluctant to leave it was probably very hungry. Put the squirrel back on the leaf pile for goodness sakes.
Staff, the bird watcher.
3:48 pm on February 18th, 2011
Hmm Staff, do you think the hawk will want cooked squirrel?
4:17 pm on February 18th, 2011
Melanie, Probably not. Especially if lots of spices have been dumped on it.
Raw meat is preferred by most raptors. Years ago I rescued a immature Red-tailed who was sitting by the side of the road. (He had a concussion and was unable to see out of one eye. (I snuck up on him and put a large box over him and took him home in the back of the van.)
I talked to the Raptor Society at the U of MN and they told me frozen raw chicken was the best food for him. Chicken with the bones in it, not boneless chicken.
The next morning it was a two hour trip to the certified rehab person near Fergus Falls MN. It is sort of strange to drive around with a hawk in a box, scrabbling around in the back seat.
That was in the fall and I called the rehabber and kept track of the hawk all that winter. He lived in their large barn until spring while they helped him get back in shape and then they released him. He hung around for a while and then went off on his own.
I like hawks and don’t get upset when they decide to come to my ‘bird feeders’ and get some lunch. They are just doing what they are supposed to do. I consider myself an equal opportunity bird feeder/watcher.
4:27 pm on February 18th, 2011
I guess I’m not an equal opportunity bird feeder/watcher (that’s funny Staff!). I scare the hawks off to save the birds. I know hawks have to eat but not in my garden.
There is grass all around (albeit winter-killed) instead of snow. It’s 52 with blue skies and sun. I’ve been out and about in it. Should be able to see the full moon tonight. Of course by Sunday we’re getting rain and snow and on Monday a “wintry mix.”

Spence posted on Facebook that Dog Who is finished!!!!!
5:04 pm on February 18th, 2011
WOO WOO!!!!
5:13 pm on February 18th, 2011
YaaHooooo! Now we wait for what? rewrites? and editing? and a cover? Sounds like the name is firm, even if it is too long.
We have little edges of earth showing at the sides of sidewalks and driveways. They are edged with huge tall piles of snow though. Still at least 3 feet on the sides but only about 1-2 feet in the center of the yards.
5:23 pm on February 18th, 2011
Our temperature today is 77 degrees, and our snow melted off long ago.
(Sorry I threw that in there, but during their weekend away, Mom and Dad sat on the riverwalk and called Grandma and Grandpa to tell them how much they were enjoying the warm, sunny weather. Dad says having nice weather isn’t as fun if you can’t brag about it to someone whose weather isn’t as nice!!!)
5:29 pm on February 18th, 2011
Kirby T,
Those of us who live in Minnesota and North Dakota do this just so y’all will have someone to phone in that type of an emergency. That said, no one sends as many postcards home as one of us who travels ‘down there’ in the winter.
Teehee
5:32 pm on February 18th, 2011
Conversly no one has more fun than a Minnesotan watching someone from the south trying to drive in snow. We are quite scornful of the attempts. It is the only way we have of getting ‘revenge’
5:53 pm on February 18th, 2011
Here is what Spence posted: “Just to clarify: Yes, The Dog Who Knew Too Much is now finished, but that doesn’t change the pub date, which is still first week in Sept.”
When someone wrote “bummer” he replied:
“Well, the publisher has lots to do. The manuscript goes through editing and copyediting, there’s design, cover art, marketing, publicity, three martini lunches – it’s endless. Just kidding about the martinis – those days are long gone.”
6:26 pm on February 18th, 2011
Rio: How are those baseball cams doing?
6:35 pm on February 18th, 2011
What is ground? What is grass? We can tell things are melting because it sounds like a hard rain is coming off the roof.
Woo Woo! Congrats to Spence!
Glad I danced in the moon last night, it’s raining. That means that in the morning the driveway will have more ice. Yikes.

Katy likes the Kindle.

It’s working, though slobbered and chewed.
7:05 pm on February 18th, 2011
Kirby!….The Kamera’s are still not working….snort!…We have a technical problem that only Molly can solve by doing some paws-on debugging….grunt!….With the fate of Rockie hanging in the balance, there is no way I feel comfortable sending anyone out on a Mission just yet….snuffle!
Katy!… She must have jaws of steel!…grunt! …Or is that just the soft outer cover?….sniff!
7:27 pm on February 18th, 2011
Riö, though Katy does have jaws of steel, just in case you ever need anything like that for a mission, that is a cloth over cardboard over hard plastic.
7:43 pm on February 18th, 2011
I just got off the phone with Katy. She told me she didn’t do it; the squirrel is guilty. Katy says she was framed, and I believe her.
7:51 pm on February 18th, 2011
Culprit!….The real culprit is the person who left the Kindle within chewing reach of poor Katy…snort!….Who can blame her if she sees a nice blue chewy just asking for it!…heh!…Or maybe she just prefers real books over the Kindley thing…grunt!
7:53 pm on February 18th, 2011
Oh Katie, For goodness sakes. Just admit you did wrong. You don’t get anywhere lying about it. We all know it was you. Well all of us except Mr.Husky.
7:54 pm on February 18th, 2011
And, maybe, there were extenuating circumstances. Heh
8:13 pm on February 18th, 2011
C.Harris: What? You were +9 this morning! That was 30 degrees warmer than here. Oh well. You deserve it. It never got to -50 here this winter.
Melanie: I have a Nancy Drew car. A 4 door Dodge sedan circa 1986. Whoever chewed that Kindle has a cast iron gut.
Woo Hoo! Dog Who is done!

Dawson, is your sedan Blue?
8:19 pm on February 18th, 2011
Yes. How did you know?
8:19 pm on February 18th, 2011
We are not telling who left the Kindle ON TOP OF THE DESK!
Katy is ignoring all, she’s gone to sleep.
Dawson: I first thought you wrote “A 4 door Doggy sedan”.
getting tired. 🙂

Sam and I just came back in the house from getting our moon dust. This stuff had better work.
8:32 pm on February 18th, 2011
Melanie: Mom said a lady came in the library the other day to pay for a book her dog had chewed. The good news is that she gets to keep the book. The bad news is who wants a book after a dog has chewed it???
8:41 pm on February 18th, 2011
Molly!… What are you talking about? Moon dust?….grunt!… We are watching Brad Meltzer’s show about the end of the world as we know it…gulp!…. Seems we don’t have much longer to play about on this here blog if the Hopis and the Mayans are correct….snorkel!

8:59 pm on February 18th, 2011
Kirby T: You should see our home library. Not many people want to borrow our books for some reason. snicker.
Also Zoë stopped going to the library, because she would then have to pay for the books anyway. I love to research things in libraries. Awesome. The one down the west side of the hills has a whole section of the history of this area. Pretty cool.
9:01 pm on February 18th, 2011

Strangest thing here in Chevy Chase. My mom and dad were out in the back yard dancing in the garden just a little while ago in the moonlight. What’s up with that? They sometimes do the most unusual things. But they sure seemed to be having fun. Wookie
9:04 pm on February 18th, 2011
Well there is only a little edge of the backyard that was in the moondust and had earth showing. I stood on it with my feet sideways like a picture from a Egyptian tomb. I also stood on a tiny bit of earth right by the back door.
The rest of the yard was full of snow and I would have had to dive over the 4 foot high wall of snow that turtlemanfred, Dawson and E constructed early in the winter. I wasn’t willing to do that.
Maybe later the moon will be high enough to stand on some earth in the front yard. If I am not asleep before that. chances aren’t good.
9:06 pm on February 18th, 2011
Wookie, I am jealous of your folks ability to dance in the yard.
Rio, What’s going on pal?
9:09 pm on February 18th, 2011
At least your people had both their feet on the ground. Staff was out there balancing on one foot by the back door and muttering to herself. People can sure be strange sometimes.
9:19 pm on February 18th, 2011
Alice – don’t tell anyone, but we figured we were closer to Katy and Melanie’s house than you. We went there just to cause a little mischief..you know…just stuff that would make Melanie and Zoe and Dan wonder “who put that there”, and “where did this go that I just put here”. Just for giggles.
But Katy was in a bad mood. She had heard that Dog Who was finished and she was trying to download it so she could read it before everyone else in the house was fighting over it. We tried to explain that it was finished but not published, and Katy just got so frustrated that she figured she could just chew the kindle open and get the book out.
Don’t tell Melanie…she’s pretty forgiving, but if she knows WHY Katy was chewing the kindle, she might not be so understanding.
9:23 pm on February 18th, 2011

Dear T&G. You are very welcome. There are some people who don’t like Raptors for some reason. One of our favorite places is Hawk Ridge in Duluth MN. It is only about 200 miles east so it is drivable. We really like to go there and watch the raptors.
http://www.hawkridge.org/
I was driving the back roads in ND because of a repaving project when I saw the hawk. I went to the nearest town with a store and asked for a box. When he asked me how big I said “big enough for a hawk”. (Just one more example of why they think I am a goofball.) They gave me a box and so I got to rescue the hawk. The rehabber said it probably glanced off a vehicle when it got the concussion.
My cousin Mike told me of the time he rescued a Raptor down in Iowa. It was freezing rain and he found the bird grounded by ice frozen in his yard. He too brought it in and put it in a box. This was in the kitchen. (I had to put mine in the spare bedroom as I don’t have doors to close to the kitchen and Alice was way too curious.) He defrosted the hawk with a blow dryer. I can’t believe it let him, but it must have been very close to death. It was released the next morning and flew away. Mike has lots of cats and dogs that live with him. He did say he had a little problem with curious pets but it didn’t affect the final result.

Thanks, Rio. I had almost forgotten about King Harvest back in 1973. Great song!
We get it on most every night
When that moon is big and bright
It’s a supernatural delight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight.
We get everybody here is out of sight
The don’t bark and they don’t bite
They keep things lose and they keep it tight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight
Dancing in the moonlight
Everybody’s feeling warm and bright
It’s such a fine and natural sight
Everybody’s dancing in the moonlight.
