Westminster (Night One)
“Don’t tell me Bernie … ?” says Spence.
“‘Fraid so,” says Admin.
“Forgot Valentine’s Day?”
“But completely. And guess who didn’t? Her old boyfriend, Dylan McKnight.”
“That slimeball?”
“Turns out the slimeball is having some success in Hollywood, doing what, God knows. But he sent her a dozen dozen red roses.”
They go quiet.
“What did you think of Westminster?” Spence says after a while.
“I think the judges should examine the handlers’ teeth, too,” says Admin. “But I liked that Scottish Deerhound. Mary Carillo and that other commentator kept calling her Hickory, but her name’s Hickory Wind.”
“After the Gram Parson’s song?”
“Gotta be. And one more thing. Non-sporting is kind of a grab-bag category, don’t you think?”
“Maybe they need a better name for it.”
“How about Nice Pets?” says Admin.

Oh, Bernie, not again. When are you going to wise up!
We are excited about seeing the end of Westminister tonight. Mary Carillo is doing a good job as announcer. She doesn’t have as much knowledge as the other guy (sorry, name escapes me), but at least she doesn’t make inane comments.
9:24 am on February 15th, 2011
When we watched Marmaduke this weekend, we couldn’t figure out what breed Bosco (Mamaduke’s adversary) was. Barb thought he might be a Dob/German Shepherd cross. Turns out he was a Beauchron, a French herding breed. In last night’s show the Beauchron was the one that they made comment about for his double dew claws on the hind legs. Mary commented about his back legs looking strange.

Siberia-H, thank you for liking me with my short hair, but that Maltese last night had such very beautiful long, flowing hair. I need that when I audition for the part of Princess.
My career is at stake.
9:51 am on February 15th, 2011
Bernie, Bernie, Bernie . . . shaking heads here. Even the Pack.
I’m watching the show now. That Scottish Deerhound is beautiful. So were all the dogs.
Turns out that we know someone who knows the woman whose Beardie won!
Almost greatness here!
9:57 am on February 15th, 2011
Did you see that?
Sam is my Valentine.
**blush**
Happy sigh……o
9:59 am on February 15th, 2011
Third!…The Pug got third!….Wooooo!…What a guy! What a guy!….snort!
10:02 am on February 15th, 2011
I wonder if Spence and Admin remembered Valentine’s Day. As long as Suzie doesn’t become a major character in the novels, Bernie can get her a belated gift.
Never realized there were so many breeds.
Good morning all.
10:10 am on February 15th, 2011
And I never knew there were dogs without tails (sorry T&G). Interesting. What is the purpose of a tail? No tail? Curly tail?
10:58 am on February 15th, 2011
Tail-tell!… My tail tells someone how I am feeling….snort!… If my tail is tightly curled this means I am happy and healthy. If my tail is at half-mast or slightly droopy or unwound, this means I am probably indifferent to a situation or maybe I’m not feeling all that well….sneeze!…When I am depressed, scared or sick I am unable to hold up my tail and it remains down during the day….grunt!…This hasn’t happened very often though….sniff!…That time I hurt my back and recently when I hurt my shoulder I couldn’t raise my tail very much….snuffle!

This is a very good article about Delacroix’s painting, Liberty Leading the People, and the situation in the Middle East.

DOG STORY IN HONOR OF WESTMINSTER
A guy is driving around the back woods and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: ‘Talking Dog For Sale ‘ He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard.
The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.
‘You talk?’ he asks.
‘Yep,’ the Lab replies.
After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says ‘So, what’s your story?’
The Lab looks up and says, ‘Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping.’ ‘I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down.. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals.’ ‘I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired..’
The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog.
‘Ten dollars,’ the guy says.
‘Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?’
‘Because he’s a liar. He never did any of that s**t.

Ha ha, very good.
11:18 am on February 15th, 2011
BluKat!….heh!snort!heh!….How funny! I’m laughing here and I never laugh…heh!
11:36 am on February 15th, 2011
Bluecat, Very funny. Made us laugh, too.
11:36 am on February 15th, 2011
Wolfie, why did GusPuppy get to go with your folks and not you? Doesn’t seem fair to us. But we’re proud Sam is ur Valentine.
We’re loving the dog show. We’ve been sitting on the TV console watching the dogs go round and round!
11:41 am on February 15th, 2011
Those stupid poodle cuts! Yikes! I would have a conniption (connip!connip!) if someone tried to cut my hair like that.
However, I do have a poufy tail. Mom told me that the word poufy means fierce.
11:44 am on February 15th, 2011
-40 and ice fog as thick as pea soup. Quest mushers dropping like flies including leaders–ten have scratched. One dog has died. One musher fell into an overflow of a creek and has 2nd degree frostbite.
11:52 am on February 15th, 2011
Blue Cat…thats a riot!!!!
We’ve been boycotting Westminster because the Sibes NEVER win the working dog group. Maybe its because we don’t do what humans call “work”. But believe us…it ain’t easy watching this farm all day long.
12:01 pm on February 15th, 2011
MollyPop: Your mom is correct. Poufy means fierce.
C.Harris: I hope you are okay. I’ll have to look at the updates of the Quest.
Bluecat: Snicker. That one is great.
Riö: saw your cousin, he did a great job.
T&G: saw your cousin, excellent work.
12:34 pm on February 15th, 2011
We were so excited about a Shar Pei winning Non-Sporting! First time at Westminster. The whole family applauded. We’re not really all that breedist about things, but they say the Shar Pei gene pool was so small when they brought it to the U.S. to avoid extinction that all us Peis are still probably pretty close relatives. So, it was just kind of like rooting for Cousin Jayne. That’s the way we looked at it.
I do agree that Non-Sporting is a terrible name for a group. Great Companions would be my choice, but so far they haven’t asked me.
12:35 pm on February 15th, 2011
Oh and Bernie – Even my Daddy remembered Valentine’s Day. And he doesn’t remember anything much!
12:40 pm on February 15th, 2011
Very well said, Oleyhowlers–we never win.
C.Harris, two dogs have died now. I know the mushers are heartbroken. We are sad. I can speak for all sled dogs when I say that we would rather die doing something we love. One very experienced musher has come close to buying the farm twice now. This race has been tuned upside down as to who might win. One Siberian team is doing quite well. The other one is plugging along just like we hope they will continue doing.
Sam, I have two words for you–hair extensions (when filming begins)
Bluecat, that joke is funny! I’ll get my dad to read it. He will remember it to tell it again. Mom and I aren’t that talented.
My opinion is the same as Stover’s when it comes to Suzie and Valentines Day.
12:42 pm on February 15th, 2011
We got Frosty Paws for Valentines Day … but we suspect it was kind of a last-minute surprise.
Congrats to Melanie, Rio, and Lola on your friends and relatives winning at Westminster. Please cheer for the Sibe tonite…
12:44 pm on February 15th, 2011
Look! One of my kind won the non sporting group! 😀 Fist time one of us has done that. Champion Miss Jane Hathaway just broke through the glass ceiling. This is very exciting! I wonder if Jane knows Princess? This is so exciting! I am so exhausted from all the celebration. We are going to watch the show again tonight. Although I do wonder why shar pei are in a non sporting group… we are working dogs and are known for guarding, hunting and even herding. You think that the people in charge would get this right! Chet, maybe you and Bernie can set someone straight on this? I can pay in duck jerky….

12:47 pm on February 15th, 2011
We only caught the tail end, saw the corgis “not a small dog, just extremely short”. snortle
12:48 pm on February 15th, 2011
C.Harris – Mom worries about so so many things and now she will also worry about the Iditarod. The humans but more for those beautiful dogs.
12:53 pm on February 15th, 2011
Congratulations on the Shar Pei win! One of us won!!
Rio, third for the pug is a good win!
This won’t happen for the Sibes, but if they are like the Siberians I know, they don’t care.
12:59 pm on February 15th, 2011
They sort of explained the group thing last night, but we are foggy on the details. Think there were 2 groups to start with, and they might have been sporting and non-sporting. Then they started dividing up more, and had terriers, toys, etc. When they eventually finished with the 7 groups, the ones that were left from the original were still callled non-sporting. That is why there is some much variety in the nonsporting group. Does that sound right? Melanie and Zoe probably know for sure.
1:00 pm on February 15th, 2011
Shame on you, Bernie!
Wolfie, you lucky dog, having Sam as a Valentine!
1:01 pm on February 15th, 2011
Mollypop, The Yukon Quest is much tougher than the Iditarod…the terrain is more difficult, and the weather has been deadly for the last half of the race. There are rumors that the trail maintenance has been very poor once the mushers crossed from Canada into Alaska. All of this has contributed to the problems.
1:15 pm on February 15th, 2011
Mollypop: a few mushers try to run the Quest and the Iditarod back to back. Dogs are better trained and better taken care of these days. It used to be a disgrace. Still, dogs die {{{sigh}}}
1:21 pm on February 15th, 2011
I thought this current race was the Iditarod. Duh!
All I know is that the dogs love to do this and so why couldn’t they have better weather to ‘play’ in?
1:38 pm on February 15th, 2011
Iditarod!….When does the Iditarod start? Or did I miss it?….sniff!….I don’t remember this Quest thing from last year. Did you watch it last year SiberH?…grunt!
1:49 pm on February 15th, 2011
The Iditarod begins March 5
http://www.iditarod.com/
1:52 pm on February 15th, 2011
Bluecat: That is a good story.
1:54 pm on February 15th, 2011
Yes, I followed the Quest on the internet last year, Rio. It is not nearly as well known as the Iditarod, but it is a tough 1000 mile race. Just like the Iditarod, a lot of the mushers don’t do it to compete, they do it for the adventure and to see if they can finish it.
1:57 pm on February 15th, 2011
Fun!…Oh Brother…grunt!
2:02 pm on February 15th, 2011
OleyHowlers: That’s an interesting site. Thank you for posting it.
2:20 pm on February 15th, 2011
Rio: ha, ha, your tail would definitely be at half-mask after 1,000 miles. Probably after one mile, in fact. I’m not really a fan of either race but everything is carefully monitored these days.
So what were Pug’s bred for…what is your purpose in life (besides being cute and eating and sleeping).
2:43 pm on February 15th, 2011
According to the Wikipedia article on pugs, they were “Bred to adorn the laps of the Chinese sovereigns during the Shang dynasty (before 400 BCE).”
2:57 pm on February 15th, 2011
Rio, You can claim royalty just like T&G.
3:21 pm on February 15th, 2011
Macy – you caught the “tail end”???? Is that a Corgi joke?
Grrrrr.
And we’re NOT short – we just long for our height. So there!
3:31 pm on February 15th, 2011
Purpose!… My sole purpose in life is to adorn my friends couch, watch baseball and eat as much as I possibly can everyday …snort!…Everything else is Filler….grunt!
3:45 pm on February 15th, 2011
Okay, Breed groups are different depending on where you live and what kind of dog show it is. The American Kennel Club usually is in charge of the big American dog shows, but dogs can be registered under other dog registries: The American Stock Dog Registry (Border Collie and Australian Cattle Dog), The American Canine Association (Health Tracking registry, lots of different breeds, a few dog shows), The American Dog Registry Association (all purebred breeds), The United States Farm Dog Registry (Working Border Collie) and The American National Dog Registry (for the American Pit Bull Terrier) to name a few. And that’s just in America.
If you go to http://www.ask.com/wiki/Breed_Groups_(dog)?qsrc=3044
there are lists of the Breed Groups. There you can see how the different countries divide up the groups.
3:47 pm on February 15th, 2011
Hmm that link didn’t work unless you cut and paste. Let me try another.

Bee – have been pondering today on your early post about the Delacroix and a truly universal democratic ideal perhaps a possibility. In our lifetime? Wouldn’t it be nice if nations could coexist like Chet’s nation in a nation and those at the Westminster?
4:51 pm on February 15th, 2011
Bluecat: When Jones writes that it’s “corrupting conservatism and disdain that sees human nature as divisible” he’s claiming that it’s only a minority of people who don’t want universal democracy. I agree. Even though the nation within the nation has “alpha” leaders, they don’t divide other dogs into “classes.” It’s only humans that do that. I don’t really understand why that is but we see it happen throughout human history. In its own way, the tv series Downton Abbey demonstrates that. Still pondering….
4:54 pm on February 15th, 2011
That last link worked.
They were talking about the judges checking teeth – let’s see what happens tonight when they check the teeth of the cane corso! Also, yesterday the announcers said the the shar pei that won was the one the bakers used as the model for the cake contest.
5:40 pm on February 15th, 2011
Barb & MagPie: Teeth can be part of the breed’s standards. I can remember one judge was known as a “tooth fairy” because that judge would pick a good set of teeth over all the other standards of the breed. So you could have a perfect dog except for one tooth lose out to a dog with many problems in conformation but have perfect teeth. No one liked to show under that judge.
5:59 pm on February 15th, 2011
Rio. My dad just read me something very important in the Wall Street Journal of all places (he reads that sort of stuff a lot; me not so much). Do you know what yesterday was? And the answer is not Valentines Day. It was the official first day of spring training. Woo! Woo! Go Rockies. Wookie
6:38 pm on February 15th, 2011
WOO WOO WOOKIE!!!
6:50 pm on February 15th, 2011
Spence: Hickory Wind. Gram Parsons. Never heard of either…but the pedal steel guitar work was nice.
Saddened today by news from the Yukon Quest about the loss of 2 sled dogs. But heartened by the heroic actions of one musher who helped another team who’d run into difficulties
Lola and Franklin: That’s a nice review of Chet and Bernie’s books on your website. You two are good looking wrinkly dogs.
Bluecat: Thanks for the humor – I needed that.
Kaia: And I thought I had wrinkles! You make wrinkles look good.
Oley Howlers and Siber H: I will definitely cheer for the Siberian Huskies today. Mush!
Macy MinPin: You missed the minpin last night. Very nice looking but kind of scrawny compared to you…just saying.
Now I must check out the links posted today. Delacroix, what?
7:12 pm on February 15th, 2011
Staff had a sore throat and was very tired this morning and didn’t go to work. She stayed in bed all day like a slug and wouldn’t even turn on the computer so we could play.
However now she turned it on for us and is having a hot cup of lemon tea. She says she will go to work tomorrow but won’t go to sewing or go down in the cold basement to watch the Westminster show. She thinks that is how she got the sore throat today. I hope you guys keep her updated tonight during the show.
I am sorry to hear about the 2 dogs who died and the musher who fell in the creek. This sounds like a really hard race.
7:20 pm on February 15th, 2011
I do not like to ride in the car. I get car sick. I’d rather stay at home with Baxter and Teddie and the dog sitter and sit in my chair, looking out the “winder.” I am much happier when I can stay at home.
But Gus Puppy loves to go in the car. Now that he is not so squimy, he is a pretty nice guy. I think we’ll keep him!
Wolfie
7:25 pm on February 15th, 2011
Glad to hear you are beginning to like Gus Puppy.
That’s great Wölfie!
7:27 pm on February 15th, 2011
We just scrolled through the pictures of all the past winners of the Westminster Dog Show. SiberH, did you know a Siberian Husky won best in show in 1980 and the following year, a pug won!! Newfs have won 2 times…1984 & 2004. There was ALOT of terrier winners and alot of a certain breed over and over again. Makes us ponder on the judging process.
Direct TV’s guide isn’t showing the dog show on A&E. Can someone verify that the show is on A&E and what time? Thanks.
G&BB
7:30 pm on February 15th, 2011
Staff wants me to ask a question.
So do those handlers tease the dog with food during the showing? And do they keep it in their mouth when they are not teasing the dog with it? And sometimes do they let the dog think he/she is going to get it but don’t give it to him after he slobbers on it, and then put it in their own mouth AGAIN?
7:34 pm on February 15th, 2011
Bluecat, Mr.Staff really liked the dog story.
7:37 pm on February 15th, 2011
Gram Parsons was a songwriter and singer who died of a drug overdose in Joshua Tree in the early 70’s. He is considered by some to be one of forces to create (what some consider to be) country rock. Emmylou Harris was his sweetheart and their voices blended beautifully. Emmylou wrote “Boulder to Birmingham” for Gram Parsons.
There. That’s more than you wanted to know, eh?
7:41 pm on February 15th, 2011
Alice: You’ve got it . . . they are really doing that.
7:49 pm on February 15th, 2011
Gus&BooBear: Wow! No, I didn’t know that a Siberian won in 1980…Thanks for the info. There is hope after all. I knew a Newf had won once, which made my family happy.
Wolfie, you refreshed my memory on Gram Parsons. Thanks
Staff, stay warm and get well.
Gus&BooBear Alert! I just noticed that no one had answered your question. The dog show is on the USA Channel in less than 15 minutes.
7:52 pm on February 15th, 2011
Thanks, SiberH!! That’s what we thought and what the Westminster website says, but our guide shows another show. Hopefully, the guide isn’t right. We have it tuned to A&E already so we don’t miss a minute.
7:55 pm on February 15th, 2011
Gus&BooBear…Turn it to the USA Channel. It is 242 if you have Direct tv.
7:59 pm on February 15th, 2011
Duh!! Do we feel stupid or what?? Everything (including you) said USA and we kept thinking A&E!! It is now on the correct channel and we are ready to go.
Thanks SiberH!!

8:50 pm on February 15th, 2011
T&G, we always liked the Clumber and Sussex!!
8:54 pm on February 15th, 2011

So many beauties. And a few uglies. Sorry, but the Neopolitan Mastiff….ewwww.
We do love that Newfie. Wonder what Melanie’s family will say.
9:26 pm on February 15th, 2011
Loved the Newf!!! Had an outgoing playful side and SO pretty. And the Siberian Husky…very pretty, but you could tell very independent!
9:27 pm on February 15th, 2011
They called the Siberian “headstrong.”. I thought SiberH just always knows the right thing to do. Wookie
9:29 pm on February 15th, 2011
Hissssss. Pffftttttt!
Phooey. the Newfie was the best…or the Siberian…..or the Pyr!
Looks political to us!
9:30 pm on February 15th, 2011
The judge is a democrat?
9:31 pm on February 15th, 2011
Well, that was another major disappointment! First the cocker and now the waterdog. There were so many other, better looking dogs out there! So far, we’re pulling for the Scottish Deerhound or the SharPei to win but our luck hasn’t been very good tonight.
9:31 pm on February 15th, 2011
Behaviour!….The Siberian was the only one that acted up before being run around the ring…heh!snort!heh!….It figures. Plus, now we all know why those guys never win the big trophy….snorkel!

9:35 pm on February 15th, 2011
We here love the POTUS and his Bo, but did not think the PWD should have won. Barb got a phone call and missed the runnerups after watching the whole group, so please fill us in.
9:35 pm on February 15th, 2011
Terriors!….This is Kirby’s group!….snort!…Wait, some part of Kirby probably belongs to each of the groups in the show…heh!
9:37 pm on February 15th, 2011
Siber H: Yes, I thought the Siberian was going to take off and run all over the rink. Heh.
9:37 pm on February 15th, 2011
The word terrier comes from the Latin terra, meaning earth, so you know what that means!
9:37 pm on February 15th, 2011
We were impressed with the Great Dane, too. Way better dogs than the waterdog. And we’re with Rio, UGLY hair!

Our friends that have terriers insist that they should be called terrior – ists! They say that there isn’t a minute when they aren’t looking for some kind of trouble to get into.
9:50 pm on February 15th, 2011
Bull!…. My friend is now in love with the Bull Terrier…grunt!…There are two of them showing tonight!….wheeze!…What she doesn’t know is they are kids in a dog suit!…heh!

OK so if we do like a terrier, it would be the Dandy Dinmont
9:54 pm on February 15th, 2011
Patton had a Bull Terrier.
9:58 pm on February 15th, 2011
Dandy Dinmont does have an irresistibly cute face.
10:02 pm on February 15th, 2011
Rio, the colored bull terrier was cool!
10:08 pm on February 15th, 2011
Terrior-ists!… My friend thinks all the Terriers are adorable and she says none of them could be as bad as I am….cough!….I beg to differ…sniff!
10:09 pm on February 15th, 2011
Those bull terriors in both sizes and colors do personify the expression of “so ugly, they’re cute”. They are adorable and so loving and friendly.
And we still say the Neopolitan Mastiff is just butt ugly!
10:13 pm on February 15th, 2011
Do you think the judges ever get tired of these handlers who spend so much time fussing with the dog’s coat right before their promenade? Why do they have to comb out the face before they go for their trot? Its not like the hair is gonna stay put!
10:16 pm on February 15th, 2011
Westie!….The Westie is soooo white…heh!…She says soooo cuuuuuttttteeee…oooooo!…grunt!
10:21 pm on February 15th, 2011

Hey Dom! Bernie here. You DID get my bet on the Westminster Dog Show, right? That’s right…I had $1000 on the Scottish Deerhound to win. So, looks like we have a winning bet, huh?
Yup, I’ll be by tomorrow to pick up my winnings. Gotta go down to the store and get some jerky treats for someone.
What’s that? How did I pick an obscure dog like a Deerhound? Well, Dom,sometimes when you need advice, you just gotta go to the dogs….

Goodnight all!
I am getting up in the middle of the night to see who wins the Yukon Quest. I set the alarm so mom will get up and turn the computer on for me.
11:23 pm on February 15th, 2011
Good night all. We voted for the Deer Hound and the Bearded Collie. Would have been happy with either. As long as it wasn’t the Peke! Sorry, but dogs should be able to walk at least.
11:23 pm on February 15th, 2011
Siber H: I was just trying to decide if I should stay up for a couple hours to see who comes in first…or get some sleep. Hmmmm.
11:27 pm on February 15th, 2011
We are just exhausted from cheering. G’night all. Thanks for sharing all the fun of Westminster!
11:45 pm on February 15th, 2011
Retired!….Was it just me, or did I hear that strange Peke is going to retire after this year??….grunt!…Thank dog if ‘it’ does….sniff!…Weirdest damned animal I’ve ever seen year AFTER year in my Group!…growl!…Peke Be Gone!…sniff!
11:56 pm on February 15th, 2011
Tupper!…Pretending to be Bernie is funny, because Tup you are funny. I think you should stop doing this. There is only one Bernie and you, Tupper are NOT Bernie and it sort of ticks me off to no end when you pretend to be Bernie!…grunt!…Just my honest Pug opinion….sniff!…Tupper down, down! Now!…grunt!
12:06 am on February 16th, 2011
Good Night!…She finally got everything done and we are off to our beds…heh!…Life is good again, until we have to get up early again tomorrow …growl!
12:49 am on February 16th, 2011
Corgis – sorry, no tail joke, in fact I did not know that you did not have tails. The one on the show had a tail. Were yours lost in a tragic tail incident? Don’t answer if it is too painful to talk about. I don’t think I could go on without my tail.. Plunder on, you poor, brave, tailless friends.
6:20 am on February 16th, 2011
Wow!
Siber H: A 23 year old rookie has won the Yukon Quest under some of the all-time worst weather conditions ever in the history of the race. Congratulations Dallas Seavey. Also congratulations to Sebastion S who came in 2nd despite stopping to help out a fellow musher and his dogs who had slipped into a creek. He is my Hero. Now I’m going to see where my personal favorite, Kathy Griffin is.
7:20 am on February 16th, 2011
T&G, imitation is the best form of flattery. We all know that you are not trying to be the real Bernie, so imitate on….we like your active imaginations! Just like we love Rio’s detailed mission reports!!
7:28 am on February 16th, 2011
Once again we are disappointed with the results. Our mom & dad watched it but we were bored and slept right thru the working group. No self-respecting Sibe is gonna prance around that ring for the judges.
We love Port. Water Dogs, but that one’s haircut was horrible. We think the Scottish deerhound was cool.
