Congratulations Sky.
Good morning all.
8:29 am on February 12th, 2014
Good morning, everyone! HRH B, you were early. Skye is a good looking member of the nation within! So busy last night with Olympics and Westminster. Someone (B&M?) pointed out we used to say “wire haired ” terrier. Does any one else remember saying “Boston Bull Terrier”? Hope all under the quilt are feeling better if not tip top and that Melanie is resting comfortably. Snowing like crazy here. on locksown for 2 days 🙁
It is a wicked Wednesday.
8:29 am on February 12th, 2014
Sorry Sky, spelled it “bad”.
8:34 am on February 12th, 2014
I love the way Sky has her front legs in the trophy.
9:00 am on February 12th, 2014
Ah, wallowing in triumph!
9:27 am on February 12th, 2014
It’s so cold here that we have hoarfrost covering the trees. Apparently several of the Great Lakes are frozen over.
9:48 am on February 12th, 2014
Winner!…If I had won that big bowl I would have sat in it…heh!heh!
9:50 am on February 12th, 2014
This is a picture of Mackinac Bridge which connects the Upper and Lower Peninsulas of Michigan. It’s a five-mile bridge. Lake Michigan is in the lower bottom and Lake Huron is in the upper top. Lake Superior is frozen over also.
9:51 am on February 12th, 2014
I’ll try the picture again.
9:52 am on February 12th, 2014
Don’t know what the problem is.
9:57 am on February 12th, 2014
Hello All and congratulations to Sky.
It looks like everyone should be under the quilt (maybe pre-emptively) today, gaining strength and on the way to feeling tip-top. (Plus it looks like FOC Josh has already bunked in there.)
Keep warm and well, everyone.
B. Stover–I’ll be back to see if you find a way of loading the picture better; good to know my computer isn’t the problem.
9:59 am on February 12th, 2014
Sky looks like a happy winner. Not sure why the terriers are the biggest winners of the show, maybe because terriers have “attitude” and that really shows in the ring. Still surprising that Goldens and Labradors have never won Westminster.
Yes, we used to say Wire Hair Fox Terriers and Boston Bull Terrier.
The Chinook (new breed) looks like a sled dog, and sounds like one, but actually was bred in New Hampshire.
10:01 am on February 12th, 2014
Can you say “COLD”?
10:08 am on February 12th, 2014
We here in western New York are happy when Lake Erie freezes over. That means no more lake effect snow storms. The lake effect storms happen when the storm moves over open water, pulling it up into its clouds and then dumping it when it gets to land. And that would be on us.
10:09 am on February 12th, 2014
Wicked Cold, HOH.
Sky is going to retire now and become a mom. I think they said last night was her retirement show, regardless. Here’s a question that perhaps Melanie can answer, if she is feeling up to posting today. If an average purebred puppy from a reputable breeder is say in the $1,000. to $1,500. price range; then what do breeders charge for a pup who is from a Westminster winner?
10:11 am on February 12th, 2014
Wow, don’t want to consider that. Snowing like crazy here in s e TN and accumulating. FUN, FUn, Fun,
10:15 am on February 12th, 2014
I thought the Golden won the sporting group last year and was in the final group. Mom remembers really wanting him to win Best in Show.
Good morning all!!!
10:17 am on February 12th, 2014
Barb, have you heard the expression “If you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it”? I’m sure that applies to Westminster puppies for sure!
I may have been reading every other word, but is Melanie still in the hospital?
Mom got a lovely rabbit fur neck warmer thingy for her trip at our church resale shop for only $1 brand new. Fur is not normally her thing, but anyhoo, SOMEBODY found it in her suitcase and made extra sure it was dead. Mom is giving us all the silent treatment this morning, something about “you guys never let me have nice things”.
10:22 am on February 12th, 2014
oh, oh…We are having the same trouble here. We want to KILL the owl hat mom got at the auction, she thinks we are over reacting.
10:23 am on February 12th, 2014
Boobear, What we meant is that the Golden and Labradors have never won Best In Show. They have probably won Best in Group.
10:28 am on February 12th, 2014
Macy, Good point about the puppy price. It was just idle curiosity, as Barb will never buy another puppy anyway. At her age she is only going to adopt of foster rescue dogs, and probably only older ones.
Melanie had her MRV (I think) last night at 6:00. Amalia reported later that she was tucked in and resting. We are assuming that she meant she was tucked in to a hospital bed.
10:55 am on February 12th, 2014
RIO! Heh! You would have filled that big bowl with beer and done a cannonball into it.
11:00 am on February 12th, 2014
Hello from Club Med
Melanie did have her MRV last night. Unfortunately, it did not give as clear a picture as they need, so now this morning she has to have an ultrasound.
She is pretty uncomfortable as she does react to the contrast dye they have to use, and she has now had three doses of it in two days. They have had to treat her for an allergic reaction to the dye with benydryl and fluids, and poor thing has a rash from here to eternity.
We have been giving her your messages and she thanks you all.( As a note from me – if you send pics, please be good enough to send paper pics and not email ones. Melanie won’t be at her computer for some time and won’t be able to print them out. She wants to have pictures of her friends smiling down on her from her bedroom walls)
We will keep you posted as the day goes on.
Oh- and by the way, a pup from a Westminster BIS would go from 10 to 20K, depending on breed and family history. Most are purchased by syndicates or celebrities.
11:11 am on February 12th, 2014
Here’s a link to the Mackinac Bridge Authority site that has three pictures of today’s conditions.

11:33 am on February 12th, 2014
oops, forgot to smile in fotos e sent to her 🙂
11:40 am on February 12th, 2014
Surrounding Melanie with healing prayers. Thank you Amalia for keeping us updated. We all appreciate it.
11:44 am on February 12th, 2014
Southeast Tn snow and here is our “Dog Cabin”

11:47 am on February 12th, 2014
Rose!…snort!….I would need a little bigger bowl to do my full double somersault correctly…chuffle!
11:47 am on February 12th, 2014
We noticed when they were announcing owners and handlers during the show that often there were multiple “owners”. Guess that is why.
Sky is on The Today show right now.
12:05 pm on February 12th, 2014
Tupper!…Have your Maw check her SDD when she is up and at-it…snort!
12:09 pm on February 12th, 2014
HOH, You have more snow on the ground in that picture than the one A.J. posted of the trails around Willow.
12:11 pm on February 12th, 2014
T and G–thank you for the update. Prayers are flowing forth as I type this.
Master Rio is in a very good mood this a.m.
12:14 pm on February 12th, 2014
B. Stover–Thanks for trying again with the picture. Is that entire body of water (or strait, or whatever it’s called) frozen over? (And what is it called?)
HOH–Brrr–I hope you’re keeping warm. (If it’s any comfort, I thought a Skye terrier had won at first, so an understandable error…)
12:24 pm on February 12th, 2014
No way could Barb drive across that bridge. It looks like going to the top of a roller coaster. She has trouble just crossing a flat bridge.
12:24 pm on February 12th, 2014
Congratulations to Sky!
Does anyone remember the name of the breed in the finals with the Tall & Lanky build, light coat and black head? Loved it.
Teddy RR: A Golden coming in third in Best in Show was Great to see.
Hounds: You mean to say youse have your very own Little Cabin in the Woods?
Sending Melanie Lots of Love & Bear Hugs.
Royal Mum: Thank you for the Updates…they are Much Appreciated.
Missing the O’Howlers.
12:33 pm on February 12th, 2014
Congratulations to Sky!
Sibers never win Best in Show, but we here think that is a good thing.
Princess Sam, I just learned a neat weather fact from you ….I didn’t know that about frozen Great Lakes and lake effect snow.
Love and Hugs to Melanie. We hate that she is having to deal with that contrast dye once again.
12:36 pm on February 12th, 2014
Bear, I don’t remember a dog like the one you are describing in the final class. Here are the 7 dogs competing for BOS:
Standard Poodle (white)
Portugese Water Dog (black)
Irish Water Spaniel (black)
Bloodhound
Cardigan Welsh Corgi (sort of a dark brindle and white)
Min Pin (red)
Wire Fox Terrier
The Terrier class or group has won 46 out of 105 times at Westminister.
12:51 pm on February 12th, 2014
So many good looking dogs…
HOH: Nice log cabin!
T&G: Thank you for the updates on Melanie. I’m sad she has to undergo all this torture. A picture and book were sent last Thursday via snail mail. She will probably have it by the time the snow melts in the Spring.
I’m going for an routine eye exam.
I am worrit about Dima and family. My prayers going out to them and to Truman and family too.
12:58 pm on February 12th, 2014
Bear, There was an Anatolian Shepherd that was tall and lanky, looks a little like you. The Akita had a dark face but I wouldn’t call him lanky. The Great Dane was black and white with a black head. He was magnificent looking. Other than that we haven’t got a clue.
1:00 pm on February 12th, 2014
We sent a book to Melanie last week and received a nice email thank you from her last weekend. Didn’t have any current pictures to send.
Time for lunch, tuna fish sandwich on toast.
1:11 pm on February 12th, 2014
B&M: Luv when ypu post meals…here tonight chicken/rice casserole, tomorrow is tuna noodle casseroole
1:16 pm on February 12th, 2014
Diane: The water surrounding the Mackinac (the “c” is pronounced as a “w” and the name is sometimes spelled that way) is called the Straits of Mackinac and it connects Lake Michigan (west) and Lake Huron (east). All of that water is frozen and that apparently has not happened in twenty years.
1:16 pm on February 12th, 2014
Sammie & BooBear: We had paws crossed for the Golden also.
Rose: If Riö had won he would be saying, “That’s all very good, but where’s the beer?” Heh, heh.
B: Those photos of the Mackinac Bridge are something else.
Can anyone say The Day After Tomorrow?
B&M: What did you think of that movie? The other one you mentioned was probably better, but this one we thought was apropos.
T&G: We can’t send anything to Melanie until Friday when we are home again…as she prefers physical photos, not emails.
1:24 pm on February 12th, 2014
Forgot: The Mackinac Bridge is actually fun to cross. Because it’s five miles long it has a gradual arch and doesn’t really seem like a bridge. I’ve never crossed it in winter however. (Crossing the bridge into Canada does scare me–it’s short and seems to move in the wind. I usually take the tunnel while trying to forget that I’m in a tunnel.)
1:26 pm on February 12th, 2014
RIO! That could be your new beer bowl.
1:28 pm on February 12th, 2014
Masquers, We thought the movie was good, special effects were great, so it was a good recommendation.
They mentioned the Best in Show movie on The Today Show this morning. I imagine everyone has seen it, but if not it is a hoot. They make fun of the people and not the dogs in the movie and it a nice little quirky film. Well worth watching.
We watch Spielberg’s Lincoln this last Sunday. Daniel Day-Lewis becomes Lincoln in the movie and Sally Fields does a very good job as Mary Todd Lincoln. It was very dark – don’t know what you call that lighting technique. One of their 4 boys died at age 4 or 5, one at age 12 and one at 18. No wonder she went off the deep end.
1:35 pm on February 12th, 2014
Best In Show has sort of a cult following. I think we are going to watch it again. Just looked it up and they said most of the dialog is improvised. It would be interesting to watch it again after learning that fact.
HOH Barb loves tuna casserole. One of her favorites from childhood.
1:41 pm on February 12th, 2014
I loved my outdoor gardening when I had my house. Now that I’m in an apartment, I thought I’d try my luck with a house plant. In the past, my outdoor gardens flourished and my indoor plants all died. So, a few months ago I bought a baby orchid, a phalaenopsis, and it’s still alive. Three weeks ago I bravely bought a big one. It has just finished blooming. Then if it makes it to next fall, it might send up new spikes and bloom. I can always hope.

1:48 pm on February 12th, 2014
MPM: The orchid is beautiful. (Loulou doesn’t seem impressed however!)
1:52 pm on February 12th, 2014
LuLu!…Is that Little LuLu I see sitting in the lap of luxery?…snort!
3:11 pm on February 12th, 2014
MPM, Beautiful orchard, and the rest of the décor is lovely too. Not to mention darling little LouLou. Is that a step for her on the side of the sofa?
3:18 pm on February 12th, 2014
News from Club Med.
The news is that there is no news. Melanie had the ultrasound this morning, and a couple of docs have stopped in to say hi, but the test results haven’t been correlated with all the docs yet
We will keep you updated.
3:29 pm on February 12th, 2014
No News!….Bummer!…grunt!
3:32 pm on February 12th, 2014
No news from Club Med? How can that be? Melanie…Melanie, where are thee?
3:37 pm on February 12th, 2014
T&G — Thanks for the report on Melanie, although when I first read it, I wasn’t sure if you meant that a couple of doctors had stopped by or that a couple of dogs had stopped by. Of course, if it were the latter, the test results would have been fully correlated, so it must have been the former.
3:42 pm on February 12th, 2014
Teddy’s Paw!…snort!
3:42 pm on February 12th, 2014
Dad is having chemo treatment #2 today. Mom took him to the Medical Center early this morning and they are still there. Dad did really well the first time so I hope he does as well today.
I sent Melanie a pic of Mom and me. It should get there any day.
3:48 pm on February 12th, 2014
B/bear, sent to Melanie, in the hospital????? Will never et there.
4:21 pm on February 12th, 2014
Bear, Did you ever figure out what breed of dog it was that you really liked?
Thanks T & G for another update, even tho there was no real news yet. Strong prayers from here.

My beloved Derek Jeter will be retiring after this season!!!!
SOB!
SOB!
4:43 pm on February 12th, 2014
Rose!….Your team is falling apart at the Jeter seams…snort!…Didn’t they just sign some big dude from Japan?…grunt!
4:59 pm on February 12th, 2014
Tanaka-san!…He just signed for a measley 155 Million bucks for 7 years…snort!….Don’t worry Rose, the Yankees will buy you another team…heh!heh!
5:20 pm on February 12th, 2014
The Yankees will rebuild their team. I think I just said what Rio said, but in a different way.
Wose, We know how you feel…we lost Helton to retirement.
5:34 pm on February 12th, 2014
Barb&Magpie: We are looking at photos from A-Z of Members of the Nation Within. Never fear Our Guy is in there Somewhere!
MollyPop&Loulou’s Mom: Nana received an Orchid and eventually killed it, either by placing it too near a heat source, or not watering it enough, or both.
5:45 pm on February 12th, 2014
RIO! I believe you mean the Yankees sold their team…Swish, Granderson , who knows if Texiera will come back. Who could they possibly buy? And I am not happy about the addition of this guy to the pitching staff. I will be under the Rose quilt for an extended period of time.
RIP: Sid Cesaer. (Sp)
MPM: Lovely orchid. Beautiful home.
5:54 pm on February 12th, 2014
Bear: how is Nana doing? I know youse are taking good care of her.
5:57 pm on February 12th, 2014
Bear, If you can remember which group he was in, then you can Google the groups and watch a rerun of the entire thing. Was it the 2nd night? They only had 3 groups the 2nd night. Terriers, working, and one other.
5:58 pm on February 12th, 2014
I didn’t even know Sid Cesar was still alive…until he wasn’t. RIP Sid.
6:02 pm on February 12th, 2014
Ha ha bear. Molly’s mom will kill that orchid for sure. My mommy suggested to her that she get an artificial one.
6:06 pm on February 12th, 2014
Green!…My friend has a green thumb when it comes to plants – Not tomato plants – but other plants and she was involved in an Orchid’s murder…sniff!
6:23 pm on February 12th, 2014
Macy, Barb didn’t know he was still alive either. Sid Caesar had to be in his 90s.
Bear, the 3rd group the 2nd night was the Sporting Group. We are trying to help you out here!
6:34 pm on February 12th, 2014
MPM–the orchid is beautiful.
Michigan–I guess scary bridges and frozen lakes are the price you sometimes pay to have enough water. I’m envious but also happy to live where it’s warmer.
Conan and I took a shower today without bloodshed. There was some yowling initially, then resignation, then what looked like enjoyment followed by running through the house to dry off. thank you all for your thoughts and advice–you helped us get through Step 1 with all of our digits (although one claw was briefly caught in the drain cover).
Prayers for Melanie and Dima and all of you…
6:38 pm on February 12th, 2014
…and special warm thought for BooBear’s Dad.
We lost Sid Cesar? I remember my parents raving about him when I was REALLY tiny…RIP..he had a long life spent doing what he enjoyed and did well.
6:51 pm on February 12th, 2014
No, HOH, Mom mailed the pic to her home address. She actually mailed it before we found out about the hospital trip.
7:04 pm on February 12th, 2014
Hi everyone. We appreciate everyone’s messages of love and concern. Dima had some excellent days and some so-so days, but he is plundering on.
The ‘rents will not be going Way Up North this year, but are talking about next year.
Right now, we are scurrying around before the coming ‘noreaster that is supposed to dump 12-18″ of snow. We don’t mind at all. We love snow, and the ‘rents will be snowbound with us.
We need prayers for Melanie. Please, Creator, hold her in your loving arms and make her strong. And we want the same for Zoe.
7:08 pm on February 12th, 2014
And pawrayers for Amalia and Leonard too.
7:29 pm on February 12th, 2014
Howlers, Amen and we are praying for Dima also.
8:12 pm on February 12th, 2014

OH: love you and yours and Barb and Blue Kat and Siber and Staff and Boo and Diane and Rio and and and… going nighty night now
8:57 pm on February 12th, 2014
All of you–Prayers, peace and good seasons. Keep warm–going to work.
9:05 pm on February 12th, 2014
We found Best In Show on tv tonight – the movie, not the dog show. Night all.
Wishing peaceful night for all.
9:10 pm on February 12th, 2014
OHs, I am glad you are back. I love youse guys, and you are always in my heart, good thoughts, and prayers. How are your chickens?
9:17 pm on February 12th, 2014
I have not been feeling too well lately. I will be lurking for a few days, but I just want you to know that those who are under the quilt, I hope and pray for your return to good health. I hold everyone on this here blog in my heart always.
Youse guys are the best.
G’day, Liz.
I’ll be back!
9:17 pm on February 12th, 2014
Cold but no snow. They are still saying it will snow tomorrow (but they said that about today also). Getting excited to see the travelers but am so sorry to miss out on the O’Howlers. However, the Hobbit Hotel is open all year round so I hope they come another time.
Hi Wose and Siber-H! Always glad to see you two on the blog. Sending pawsitive thoughts for the perfect job for Rose. And kudos to Siber-H for becoming so techie. My sister offered me her HP desktop computer but I’ve always been a Mac person and will stick to my laptop especially after hearing from all of you with window problems. My family (including me) own an HP computer store so I am the odd duck/black sheep in the family.
Sadie is finishing the last of her medicine so I hope she will be in the clear with whatever is going on with her bladder.
9:22 pm on February 12th, 2014
CHobbit, I am worried about Sadie being upset by having to move out of her home during our visit. I hope she will be OK and the change doesn’t upset her too much. She has had a lot of changes in her life lately. It would sure be nice if she, and you were able to stay. sniff.
9:33 pm on February 12th, 2014
Why is Sadie moving out?
9:33 pm on February 12th, 2014
Zoe!…I worry about Zoe being alone in that big house tonight during the storm, with only two Newfs to look after her…wheeze!
Sadie!…Why is Sadie leaving when all youse guys go to visit?…snort!….That does not seem fair at all.
9:39 pm on February 12th, 2014
Rio – MAma made Zoe PROMISE that she would not try to shovel or snowblow herself out tomorrow. She made that promise and said she will call their go-to guy and her nephew. Martha is at the house with her tonight, and the generator is ready for business if necessary. So, she should be snug as a bug.
And Mama is only a couple of miles from the hospital, so if the snow stops she should be able to get there and make sure Melanie is behaving herself. HA!
We are going to bed here. Gotta be rested up for the big shovel-out tomorrow. G’night all
9:48 pm on February 12th, 2014
Tupper!…Relieved to know Zoe will not be alone tonight…sniff!…I think these guys here need to buy a generator for when the power goes out…grunt!
9:50 pm on February 12th, 2014
O’HOwlers,
CHobbit mentioned, sometime during the beginning exchange of info, that she would be moving to her sister’s house so that all the plunderers could stay at her, Sadie’s, house. So I theorize that Sadie will also be moving over to sis’s house also. Things have been so fluid lately that those plans may have changed. But it has been on my mind, given Sadie’s recent illness.
10:06 pm on February 12th, 2014
My Giant and that Damn Pixe have been busy all day. First, they dropped off the drop bags in Anchorage, high tailed it to the kennel to load up dogs for vet checks of the race hopefuls in Wasilla. Wheeze!
I would give all my sparkles to Melanie if it would make her feel better. I would only complain a little bit in the beginning.
Beau: Can you lay paws on Melanie and command her to heal?
10:21 pm on February 12th, 2014
Bellie!…Beau would do that in a flash if he could. Beau believes in Miracles….sniff!
10:38 pm on February 12th, 2014
Bedtime for Bonzo here. Night all youse plunderers, A very emotional day.
11:04 pm on February 12th, 2014
Guests of the Hobbit Hotel: Staff, Dawson, and MPM. Is that all?
11:10 pm on February 12th, 2014
That is what we thot. Did we miss someone?
12:25 am on February 13th, 2014
Hobbit Update: c.hobbit and Sadie will be in residence at the Hobbit Hotel afterall! A young relative decided to visit Alaska and will be staying with my sister in her guest room (formerly to be mine). Don’t worry: there is enough beds for all. I’ve been brushing Sadie daily so hopefully the dog hair will be under control and I know she will enjoy the extra pets and playtime.
P.S. a couple of days after everyone leaves, another young relative is showing up with 5 college friends “to see Alaska.” They plan to be gone a lot–I have been trying to educate them as to how big Alaska is in terms of driving to Fairbanks, to Homer, to Valdez, etc. during the course of a single week. It is like they did no research. They want to stay overnight in Denali Park thinking that “off season” they would get cheap rates. However, Denali Park is closed October-April. They want to snowshoe in the wilderness but have no concept of moose, bears, wolves {{{sigh}}}.

Thanks a lot.

This is a great site. Are you active in any sports? My dad love to play various darts games at pubs with tungsten darts. If you are interested in the game of darts please get more info. You will navigate to an excellent dart site.

Appreciating the dedication you put into your website and in depth information you present.
It’s good to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date rehashed
material. Fantastic read! I’ve bookmarked your site and I’m including
your RSS feeds to my Google account.
