Does Westminster include racing through snow, hauling a musher around? If so, we’re in!!!

Well, I doubt that the breeders recoup the expenses thru stud fees or puppies, so it must be the prestige that they are after.

Good morning all. Still bitter cold her, but getting better. 30* tomorrow.

Barb is on her way out to spend her gift card. We need some sort of spring flowers or something to visually warm things up around here.

    Greetings!

It is not a fit day out for man or beast here in my neck of the woods!

It was amazing to see pictures on the news yesterday of the frozen Niagara Falls. On the bright side, the Falls have seen an uptick of 67% in tourism because of this.

Forgive my ignorance, but if it costs between $50,000 and $100,000 dollars to enter a dog in Westminster, what the F does the owner of the dog get if their dog wins????

Time to get out of my pj’s, shower, and wash my hair. BBL.

    Good Friday to all!

Rio: One Wonders whatever were they thinking.

To those who wonder what the Westminster winner gets – nothing but the big, ostentatious ribbon and bragging rights.
    No money prizes.
Big shows are a rich person’s game, which is why you see so many celebrity owners.
Of course there are small independent breeders who show without doing the whole show campaign thing. Our own Zoe showed one of her wonderful dogs at Westminster, and did quite well in the breed class.

Good Morning and warm wishes to those of you in the cold parts of the country (I saw photos of giant icicles hanging off buildings in MA in today’s paper).
If you think of the dogshow thing as a hobby rather than a business, no–it still doesn’t make much sense–you could buy serious art instead…
That said–it’s always good to see a picture of Scrooge McDuck (used to love his money bin as a child).
I’m off to spread wisdom and knowledge in class–later, y’all…

    Good day all.

Well my brand new furnace a little over a week old stopped working yesterday morning but by the time I figured it out, it was after hours. The company I used has no emergency number to call. Even though it is after 8 am here, I get voice mail when I call the work number. I seem to recall that their crew only works 10 hour days M-Th. Heh.

My house retains heat well so even though I think the furnace stopped working in the morning, it is 62 inside (21 outside). Good thing Sadie and cat have fur coats.

  18. O'Howlers
    12:43 pm on February 20th, 2015

Hobbit! They have to have an emergency number. What kind of furnace is it? If it’s oil, call your oil company.

    12:43 pm on February 20th, 2015

yeep – furnace problems all over this cold, bitter winter.

Hobbit – sounds like a good reason to curl up with a quilt and a good book – except tha it is FRIDAY!! Do they work on weekends? Doubtful.

  20. c.hobbit
    12:58 pm on February 20th, 2015

Evidently the furnace I ordered is from Canada. One of the panels has imprinted written instructions–all in French. Heh.

I got brave and found the reset button and hit it. Furnace is in process of firing up. The reset button is black in amongst other black buttons and dials. It would have helped if it had been red as I am sadly familiar with red reset buttons from my years up north.

Still having “hot-to-us” weather up here…it is to be almost 40 today and tomorrow and 45 on Sunday. It is to rain Sat, Sun and Mon. Phooey.

I felt silly wearing a coat yesterday but it feels awkward without it. However, some people are breaking out the shorts and sandals.

Fairbanks is to range from +21 to +35 next week.

Those Westminster bragging rights do not come cheap.

    Whew!
CHobbit: I’m glad you found the reset button. I did not want Canada to get a bad rap regarding your furnace. Still, I agree the reset button should be red and the instructions should be in English!

Rio: Sarah Canary. This book has me feeling a sense of impending violence and death. I need a Miss Julia book to lighten up the pressure in my chest.

It snowed yesterday, then rained, then snowed more overnight. It is a mess out there and supposed to go above freezing,/b> off and on, this week and next week. Not good.

  32. Barb, Maggie and Lucy
    3:02 pm on February 20th, 2015

Wose, That wasn’t the price of entrance. That was what the average cost would have been by the time they compete at a major dog show. In 2006 the Bull Terrier who won had been competing for 3 years, and they figure it cost $700,000 by that point. (I just read that). That is why some of the dogs are owned by LLCs or Corporations. They are figuring the cost of having the dog professionally groomed, boarded and handled, after the original puppy cost. Some times the announcer will say owned by…and handled by…. Or if they say bred, owned and shown by…then you know it is just one person showing one dog. Did you notice Carlos Puig showed several dogs at Westminister? You will always see that handler at the big shows.

  33. Barb, Maggie and Lucy
    3:06 pm on February 20th, 2015

Oh, yeah, and I forgot the cost of entry into a show-some of these dogs have been shown 100-150 times before they get their championship and get an invite to Westminister.

My dearest Masquers, you are too kind.

Our Alaska trip almost did not happen. I remember Grizz not wanting to go, and me doing my best to sell him on the idea. I told him that Rebecca and AJ were kind enough to offer a spare bedroom for us. Grizz still did not want to go. Then I told him I was going by myself. Well, that did not go over well at all. I guess Grizz thought if I went by myself and stayed at Snowhook, with people that I had never met, that AJ would chop me up and feed me to the dogs. Silly man!

I think I finally wore him down by telling him that the trip could serve as both my birthday and anniversary present. We brought home such wonderful memories. I am so glad for youse that have gone and will go to Alaska for the Iditarod!
