Waiting For News
“We were going to post a Snowhook update,” Spence says. “Snowhook’s ‘our’ team when it comes to dog sled racing in Alaska and right now they must be close to the finish of the Northern Lights 300.”
“Love that name!” says Admin. “But since we don’t have news, there are some out there who don’t believe a random number generator picks Chet’s Friend of the Month, so why don’t we show it to them?”
“Well – “
“Here it is, East German army surplus, circa 1956!”
Welcome Haley (at last, but well worth the wait!).

Good morning and Happy Egg Day.
Woo Hoo !!!!! AJ crossed the finish line at 3:04 am Alaska time. It looks like he was still in 5th place (and just ahead of Jason Mackey). The leaderboard has not yet been updated, but they are reporting on facebookie as teams finish.
8:06 am on January 27th, 2013
Oh! It is official. They did update the leaderboard, only now they put the Finish up top, above the Start. Go figure.
Congratulations to Snowhook! Well done!
8:30 am on January 27th, 2013
Nice work Snowhook! Whoo!
8:43 am on January 27th, 2013
Ummmmm. The Random Number Generator looks like a meat grinder to me. My mom used to have one.
I have to go out to the leaderboard.
Good morning all.
8:46 am on January 27th, 2013
This just in, the team has arrived back at the kennel. The did indeed finish in 5th place! I am pleased to report, Junior came back with both eyebrows. I’m working on a theory that I have perfected yet, but the jist is if you end the day with only one of your eyebrows, things did not go your way. Everyone is happy and are getting soup before the Giant and my Lady go inside to get some sleep. AJ was asleep five minutes into the drive home. Good thing my Lady was driving. This is Whitey-Lance signing off from Race Watching Central.
8:52 am on January 27th, 2013
Another good update, Whitey-Lance. Can you tell us who was dropped at the last checkpoint, and if all are well?
We received donation pledges for Louisa Mae from Staff, Bear, and Wolfie. If we missed any others while we were busy howling at the Wolfie Moon and enjoying our new Winter Tavern, please let us know.
8:56 am on January 27th, 2013
Howlers: I have some more reporting time, while the Giant and my Lady wait for the meat to soak for the race dogs so I can answer your question. Marco, my son, was dropped for a sore wrist. He is still at the checkpoint waiting to come home. He will be brought to Willow by plane, and the plane will wait for light to fly. Both Marco and Elim should heal up just fine.
9:00 am on January 27th, 2013
Thanks once again, W-L. Yours has been some excellent reporting.
Oh, one more question (well one more of what will probably be many 🙂 ): did Twig and Quig lead thru the entire race?
9:03 am on January 27th, 2013
Howlers: Good question. My Lady said Quig and Twig were in lead when she saw the team leave the starting line and were in lead when she saw the team cross the finish line, but that doesn’t mean AJ didn’t switch things up a bit on the trail. He did say, before falling asleep on the ride home, that Quig was in a passing mood on the first day of the race. AJ said Quig would see a team up ahead, put the hammer down just so the team could pass.
9:11 am on January 27th, 2013
Cool! Good for Quigley…a racing mentality. Must be tough on the Giant to keep him chillin’.
9:18 am on January 27th, 2013
Great race! 5th ain’t too shabby!
Another question (and I am sure we should already know this). Is it called the The Northern Lights 300 because it is 300 miles in length?
9:39 am on January 27th, 2013
Oh oh oh pick me Barb I know this. One. The race is indeed called for its length, but due to trail conditions that had to be dealt with it was more like 250.

9:58 am on January 27th, 2013
Whooooooohoooo!
What a way to wake up! Go Snowhook! Whitey-Lance and Macy, very nice reporting from you both!
Belle Starr, before you come to pick me up at the airport , please make sure you take good care of your two-legged. She needs to feel better. And take good care of the Giant, too.
Royal Mum, I hope you are feeling tip-top soon!

Good Morning Everyone! I’m up early(er). Great Race reporting from Ace Reporter Whitey-Lance and our newest reporter in the field, Macy Min-Pin of the Small Dog Iditarod Team.
Everyone was up late last night (even Melanie). Hope you are all feeling much better this fine Sunday morning.
Terry: Thanks for the assist to Haley’s mom. The photo is Great!
At last…a picture (on the blog…facebookie has already seen it) of the infamous RNG. Quite the invention I must say.
(whispering) it looks very old.
10:20 am on January 27th, 2013
Macy, thanks for the top notch reporting from the field.
Hope Amalia is feeling better this morning.
Egg day here too. Soft boiled on crusty whole grain artisan bread. Yum!

10:37 am on January 27th, 2013
East Germany circa 1956 was Communist East Germany.
What does the term “hammer down” mean in sled racing?
10:46 am on January 27th, 2013
Barb&Magpie and O’Howlers: Egg Day here three…a poached egg on Cracked Wheat Sourdough toast. Let’s hope Princess Sammie is enjoying her egg this morning also.
After chow time it’s off to the market to replenish supplies.
B: Hammer down…my guess would be “putting the pedal to the medal” in sled speak.
BBL.
10:47 am on January 27th, 2013
that would be metal……
10:54 am on January 27th, 2013
Bear, I did NOT get an egg today. My family mistreats me. Molly’s Mom is coming later and I will get my egg tomorrow.
11:02 am on January 27th, 2013
Bear, I’m just glad I didn’t have nightmares after watching that movie.
Barb, I will be sending strong healing prayers to you this week. You are in good paws with the Smoochers watching over you. Belle Starr may convince the doctor to glue some pink sparkles on his signature. : )
11:02 am on January 27th, 2013
A lovely morning with good news and good breakfasts. I had french toast with fresh ground nutmeg on it – and bacon! Whoo Hooo.
Dad had an egg, olive bread toast and bacon, with Tea. I had water.
Dad says he doesn’t feel bad after his fall yesterday. He says he feels about the same. That is good news.
11:18 am on January 27th, 2013
Sammy, what’s up with that? Doesn’t anyone eat eggs except MPM? You are deprived over there!
French toast with bacon sounds really good too.
We will be getting bacon with our pork order from the organic Berkshire pig. Can’t wait to try it!
11:21 am on January 27th, 2013
They don’t make those random generators like they used to do. Nice machine. I wish it would pick my name.
Whitey-Lance & MacyMinPin: Thanks for the reports. All the dogs came home with their eyebrows intact.
Snowhook Bella: Great race by our team! I hope Elim and Marco heal up fast. That Quigley! The rest of the team kept up with him.
11:28 am on January 27th, 2013
A good morning to everyone! Things did not go well with my boy Cody, and mom Is feeling a bit down. The race was a wonderful diversion. If mom were a drinking gal, she would have been tossing out donations in the millions of dollars. “I bid $2,000,000 to the Feed the Giant fund. Do I win all the prizes?”. Heh. Luckily, mom’s drink of choice is diet Dr. Pepper.
11:31 am on January 27th, 2013
Dr. Pepper, drink at 10, 2 and 4!
Do you want to share what happened with Cody, or is it too personal?
11:32 am on January 27th, 2013
And congratulations to Team Snowhook and their 34 eyebrows. WL is an excellent reporter and keep us on the edge of our seats!
Sammy, whoever said that eggs are just for breakfast? Aunt Mollypop’s mom should give you an egg as soon as she arrives today.
11:34 am on January 27th, 2013
Barb, I’m off to church but I can post later.
11:38 am on January 27th, 2013
Alice & Abbie: Yum! Staff’s french toast sounds good.
Good news about her dad. We are very relieved to hear he is okay after his fall yesterday.
The sound of zzzzzzs coming from the kennel.
Good job Snowhook!
Not so good news from Wolfie. Waiting to hear more.
11:44 am on January 27th, 2013
Congratulatins to Snowhook!!
Thank you Whitey-Lance and Miss Macy for your excellent reporting.
I hope Rebecca can get some rest now and start feeling better.
I promise never again to make money pledges here on the blog. I will send emails to those in charge of a particular fund.
11:52 am on January 27th, 2013
So Quigley “floored it”?
11:57 am on January 27th, 2013
Congratulations to Snowhook! Good “shake out” run.
We are hoping that the so-called random number generator will “grind out” our names as FOM. tee hee
11:58 am on January 27th, 2013
from the Northern Lights 300 web page

AJ at the start.
12:02 pm on January 27th, 2013
Fellow Sibers!!!
A team of Siberians has entered the Yukon Quest! His name is Rob Cooke and he is a rookie, but he and his Siberians made a fine showing in last year’s Yukon Quest 300. He is British and a member of two different British Siberian Husky clubs.
I am going to send him an email from the Yukon Quest’s website.
12:06 pm on January 27th, 2013
Thanks Staff, That is a great photo of our team in the sunshine.
Happy Dogs!

12:08 pm on January 27th, 2013
And you can see their BOOTIES!
12:16 pm on January 27th, 2013
Staff, that sounds sort of naughty.
12:16 pm on January 27th, 2013
Great photo of Team Snowhook!
12:25 pm on January 27th, 2013
Great photo of our team, and thanks to W-L’s expert reporting we can now identify many of who’s who. Is Quigley to our right (AJ’s left)?
The rents just had their almost-regular Sunday late morning breakfast of banana walnut pancakes and Caw Caw sausage. Yummy. Smelled good, especially the maple syrup.
12:34 pm on January 27th, 2013
Haley is adorable. She really is well worth the wait.
12:37 pm on January 27th, 2013
We got our official Iditarod map in the mail yesterday! How very cool. It will hang over the desk and have little push pins in everyplace we know AJ has passed!! It’s neat to win something. YEA!!
Great race yesterday! We are so proud of the new team members and the Giant and BDHW!!
Hope Rebecca starts feeling better as well as Wose’s Prof! Not long until the race.
12:42 pm on January 27th, 2013
Photo!…Wow! I can even see Juniors eyebrows when I click on the photo….Woooooo!
12:43 pm on January 27th, 2013
T&G: How is Mama feeling today?
G&BB: You are right about that, not long until race time.
Good thing Shake Your Booty is fully funded.
Now on to Feed The Giant!
12:46 pm on January 27th, 2013
Siber, Don’t ever do that again or you will have to have a time out, or go to the Listening Bench. Could you have made a better choice? That is how with-it parents talk to their children today.
12:54 pm on January 27th, 2013
Barb, I am laughing, but you are correct about modern parents.
1:09 pm on January 27th, 2013
Siber, Thanks for letting us know about Rob Cooke. Wasn’t Mike Ellis in the Quest last year?
Louisa Mae is 26% toward the Iditarod start.
1:18 pm on January 27th, 2013
Yes, Mike Ellis was in the Yukon Quest last year. He dislocated his shoulder and had to drop out of the race because he couldn’t take care of the dogs with one arm. It was the year before last that he and his Siber team did so well in the Quest.
1:47 pm on January 27th, 2013
We are still cracking up at Whitey-Lance calling Marco, Garrett, and Abe the fruiit of his looms. :>
2:45 pm on January 27th, 2013
T&G: Give your mum some cuddles.
Melanie: Have a great visit with Zoe.
Haley is a strikingly beautiful dog.
Poor Princess Sam: I will eat an extra egg in your honor.
3:41 pm on January 27th, 2013
Staff went to the Yukon Quest site. She found this neat link where you can fly over the Yukon quest route. The only thing is it sort of made her sea-sick. heh. But it was really cool. They also have an elevations map. Geez! Those dogs have to go up high!

3:46 pm on January 27th, 2013
We had freezing rain and now it is snowing. Going to be messy tomorrow morning. Poor Mr.Staff. If he can’t get the van doors open(it sits outside)poor Staff will have to drive him in the little Toyota. Mr.Staff’s leg brace does not allow him to drive in the Toyota. He has to slide in the back seat from one side and scoot all the way over to the other side so his leg can stay straight.

GAH!
I meant to say hope Elim and Marco are feeling tip-top soon.
G&BB: I hope your dad is continuing to feel better.
4:44 pm on January 27th, 2013
Alice: perhaps a hair dryer if you have a long extension cord? For future reference…before winter hits I often armoural the rubber gaskets around the car doors so they don’t freeze.
5:16 pm on January 27th, 2013
Siber-H, I “friended” Rob Cooke on Facebook about a year ago. He’s an interesting fellow.
I am now going to go under the quilt. It was a difficult day.
5:27 pm on January 27th, 2013
Yuji is glad to finally see his friend Haley up with the others.
Today we drove to Queens so Bob could watch Yuji while we took the 25 minute train ride to Manhattan. We got off at Greenwich Village and wandered south through Soho, finally realizing that we’d end up in Tribeca, where I worked for years. Just north of Canal Street, I saw the perfect setup for a shot of Donna looking mysterious on a gritty street.

5:32 pm on January 27th, 2013
Terry: Nice photo of Donna looking mysterious!
Melanie: I can only imagine. Get some rest if you can.
5:33 pm on January 27th, 2013
SnowBella: Yark! Please check your SDD.
5:42 pm on January 27th, 2013
There is a musher long overdue to the finish line. AJ is firing up the snowmachine to go look for the mising team. Me? I’m going out to do dog chores. Wheeze.
5:52 pm on January 27th, 2013
Whitey-Lance, paws on the ground reporter here, we just received word the overdue musher arrived safe at the finish line not long after AJ fired up the old snow machine. This is happy news. I know first paw what it is like no one knows where you are but you.
5:56 pm on January 27th, 2013
Melanie, That is neat that you”friended” Rob Cooke on facebookie. Mom won’t let me do that. Gah
Prayers going out for the missing musher and dogs.
5:57 pm on January 27th, 2013
Thank Dog the missing team is safe. We were all set for a Search & Rescue.
6:12 pm on January 27th, 2013
Machine! …That circa 1956 machine looks sort of like the machine that is now down in my basement…grunt!…What the hell!
6:45 pm on January 27th, 2013
Molly’s Mom is here and she brought Rachel Rays treats with chicken. Also, I’m growing my hair again. I escaped Jacqueline’s clutches this time.

6:47 pm on January 27th, 2013
Hairy me again.

6:58 pm on January 27th, 2013
Sammie!….Looking good!…snort!….Even if you are upside down…heh!
6:59 pm on January 27th, 2013
Sammie – would you quit being just so darn cute? You are making it hard for the rest of us to get any attention.
Mama is getting better. She had a bad kidney infection, and the combination of the meds for that along with another med she has to take were a bit much. Plus, the same day she was getting a shot in her wrist cuz she has a carful of tunnels or something like that.
Wonder if the Snowhook dogs with sore wrists have carfuls of tunnels too?
7:00 pm on January 27th, 2013
Sneeze!….That tail! Look at her tail….snuff!…I wish I had a tail like that…sneeze!
7:02 pm on January 27th, 2013
Tupper!…I’ve been worried about Golinka so I am glad you are reporting in on her progress…sniff!…She better be up and at-it for the month before the Big Race! It gets pretty exciting around here the month of February….snorkel!
7:05 pm on January 27th, 2013
Sammy, we like your longer hair.
I think I just heard thunder. In January! Ice storm now, 60 degrees on Tuesday. Everyone say Global Climate Change!
7:06 pm on January 27th, 2013
Rain!…Her mother told us that we had a really nice rain through the night last night…snort!…I did not hear it over all the snoring that Beau and my friend were making…grunt!…But I could tell it rained when I smelt the spring-like air this morning..heh!…Love it!
7:08 pm on January 27th, 2013
T & G, Are those tunnels due to all the pottery work she does? Or can we blame it on the gym?
7:18 pm on January 27th, 2013
Supper!…Spaghetti and meatballs tonight…sniff!sniff!…Although, it is not my friend making supper so everyone is on guard…grunt!….There is lots of banging and slamming of cuppard doors going on upstairs right now during the creation process….snuff!
7:19 pm on January 27th, 2013
Stover!….When is Shakespear on Tour going to be rebroadcast?…snort!…Seems like you said this Sunday, which by my calculations is today..wheeze!
7:33 pm on January 27th, 2013
SnowBella: Belle Starr informs us she was on a mission to intercept a parcel post delivery yesterday when you saw her sprinting through the trees. For some reason they were reluctant to drop it off in her care. She claims she was only trying to save her Lady a trip to the post office.
7:44 pm on January 27th, 2013
Rio: The TV Guide indicated that “Shakespeare Uncovered” was going to be repeated today at 4PM EST but it wasn’t. I haven’t been able to find any other information. Blast!
8:06 pm on January 27th, 2013
Grump!….They are not re-showing Shakespeare here either…sniff!drat!
8:14 pm on January 27th, 2013
Rio: PBS always repeats programs so I’m sure it will be rebroadcasted. I’ll keep an eye out.
8:52 pm on January 27th, 2013
Turning in early. Night all.
8:59 pm on January 27th, 2013
Good night here too.
Going to catch up on some shows we missed – Bear
8:59 pm on January 27th, 2013
Night Barb – we are not far behind you.
p.s. – Those tunnels are not part of pottery. They just happen sometimes to some folks. Pottery actually helps keep things flexible.
So – now Beau is chasing Sammie’s tail, huh?
tee hee

Sammie, you are just the cutest thing! I like your short hair. Your look in the short hair picture should be quite effective in getting an egg very day!
