Viva Italia

“Here’s something you’d like, big guy,” Bernie says. I hurry into the office, thinking: treat! Wouldn’t you? But there’s no treat. Bernie’s at the computer. “They’ve got a whole team of dog lifeguards in Italy, 300 of them so far, all trained at the Italian School of Canine Lifeguards. The dogs wear a harness or tow a buoy or raft that swimmers in trouble can grab onto. Sometimes they even leap out of helicopters or speedboats.”

Wow! Where’s Italy, again?

“Says here that the school will train any breed as long as they weigh at least 66 pounds – no problem there, Chet – but they work mostly with Labs, Newfs and goldens – well, you’ve got all that and more, except maybe not the golden part. Any golden in you?”

What was the question? More important, when were we checking out this school?

Hat tip – Wookie.

    Ok, confession time,

Yesterday, when I went in for the procedure to remove a stent they had put into me somewhere near the new kidney, I was very nervous. I took two books.

When I got there they were backed up an hour. (Their computers had crashed) and I finished the non SQ book. So I was forced to read TFAT.

I was on chapter 11. Now I am on Chapter 23. I managed to nap all the way home or there would be nothing left to read at all.

Staff, It's okay . . . Wöökie's mom and you are doing a beautiful quilt. You are forgiven about everything.

Though I'm not sure Wöökie's involvement with the quilt is going to save him from the wrath of Riö.

Wookster, You might have gotten a hat tip from someone up there, but I bet you are on Stover's and Rio's SOL list for creating another distraction.

Once on Animal Planet, I watched an Italian Newfie named Mas that leaped out of helicopters to save people.

Staff, you are forgiven for your momentary loss of self control, regarding those 12 chapters.

SOL doesn't begin to cover the list Wookie et al are on.

I'm glad things went well Staff. You read as much of the novel as you want to read. Do you have any interest in the audio books of C&B? I'm thinking that they might help during doctor visits. I have the cds which I prefer to the mp3 type. I agree with Rio, that you and Debbie should sign our lovely quilt. Both of you did a wonderful job on a many layered and difficult project. All of us greatly appreciate your work.

That phenomenal quilt makes such a great start to my day.

    Then the Wookster strikes again!

This is a vast improvement over Lois. Mom and I love anything dog related. We are happy with Chet's post today. Uh, I don't think they will be enrolling any Siberians in that lifeguard school unless the water freezes over.

Staff, yesterday was a day you deserved to read as much of TFAT as needed. We are glad the procedure went well and that you had TFAT to read.

We agree with everyone that Staff and Debbie should sign the quilt.

Personally, we really liked today's post…don't really care too much about Astrid anymore and we love when Chet goes off on a tangent (except for tin futures…sorry, Maggie…know your Mom tried to explain them but it went over our cat heads).

Rio, we will try to ask SQ any question any of our bloggers want, but it will be very crowded and may not get called on. But Mom has promised to stand in line and get a copy of TFAT signed to Gus&BooBear from Spence and Chet! How cool is that!

There are definitely two factions on this blog. There are those who are mystery buffs, and there are those who enjoy the books more because of Chet's persona. We fit into the 2nd group. We love the books primarily because of Chet's unique narration of the story and his observations of all things human and animal. The mystery aspect is the secondary enjoyment to us.

Dawson, I am not sure if they will help with your mortgage, but that is how they originally got their name. This guy named Charlie, who came up with this variety back in the Depression, sold these plants for $1.00 each and paid off his mortgage. Or so the story goes. I will be sending Staff some of these, plus Cherokee Purple, Black Brandywine and Paul Robeson. Those were my 4 favorites from this year. ML being #1.

Those chipped teeth can be contagious but knowledge is power…or something like that. Thank's WWWWW's Dad and hope you don't have to mortgage the farm to get that tooth fixed. But, if you do, Barb will give you some of her Mortgage Lifter seeds. With that funny grin of yours, you will sell a million tomatoes in no time.

There are breeders who specialize in brown or silver. It's recessive so they might have a litter of black with a pup or two that are brown or gray.

Bess's undercoat is brown, though she is a black dog. When her outside coat is in she's black, when we shave her for the summer she's brown.

A cool looking dog I saw was a silver with black markings. This was a mismark. You can't show those. You can show brown, gray, black, Landseer and Irish Spotted.

Well, Maggie, I wrote that sentence like I knew what I was talking about (shouldn't have done that). Your guess could be as good as mine. It could be a $650 dental bill Rio was talking about. Of course, $650 wouldn't get much done by a dentist these days…maybe one x-ray. We'll get this figured out before Rio ever returns to the computer.

Rio – Your friend should get season's tickets from the Rockies. She's their good luck charm.

I will have 3 days of good fun stuff with Sam's Dad and Boy. They do stuff that their Mom would never allow. It will be great food galore. Maybe we can have a toga party like Staff did.

Mollypop and Sam: My Mom and Dad used to live in that neck of the woods, when Dad was stationed at Fort Drum in Watertown. Luckily, that was back before I came to live with them. My Mom remembers walking Cassie — the dog they had then — when it was 30 degrees below zero! And they were there two years, and both winters they had more than 20 feet of snow! Not exactly my thing! I used to complain about winters here — sometimes it gets down to freezing, and we might get half-an-inch of snow every year or two — but that's nothing compared to the stories I've heard Mom and Dad tell. How do you stand it???

Thanks for keeping up with the baseball, Dawson, while I was away. This is bad, really bad. What has gone wrong with the Rockies…oh crap

Maggie, I guess Rio got his figures right after all yesterday. He was making a point about the outrageous prices they charge at MLB games.

Kirby and Staff, the badge is so cute!

Kirby, dear Kirby – Your family did not live anywhere near here. We're probably a good 4 hours away. No one lives in Watertown, population 0. Take a look at the map. Watertown is located way north and at the end of Lake Ontario. They get maybe 300 inches – yes over 20 feet – of snow each winter.

That doesn't happen in Buffalo. We're in a northern suburb and Mom never even had a plowing service for our driveway. Every few years we get dumped on big time, always before Lake Erie freezes. That makes the news! Again look at the map – the snow belt is south of Buffalo where Mom and I really live at the ski/golf place. Most of their snow is made by the snow machines.

    4:14 pm on August 25th, 2010

Oh, and the temperatures need to be below freezing if we're going to ski, but they seldom even get down to zero. 20 degrees mostly. In geography class, we learn that the wind comes over a lake that can't go below freezing so we stay way warmer. Great in the summer because that same wind comes over a 75 degree lake and is so pleasant.

Mollypop: Mom says you need to look at your atlas again — they lived on post, but Mom worked in Watertown, and she says there were lots of people there! She said they never got down to Buffalo, though — she just knew about lake effect snow and figured since you're on a lake, you got it, too!

Hey Rio! I hope you can work the remote control, or are you still stuck on the baseball channel? We're watching Top Chef right now — they're showing the past shows so we're catching up, then we can watch the new one in about 10 minutes!

Yes, I hope Dan gets unkinked before they have to operate. Wonder what makes you get kinked in the first place. Same kind of thing happened to my mother a couple years back. She has the scars to prove it.

I'd sure like to hear Rio crowing barking about the game like Siber H. but also have to get up early for work tomorrow. Oh there he is!

Foul Balls!… When the first ball hit really close to her and the Braves fan just a few rows down, he said, “Wow! That’s the closest I’ve come to a ball in 2 years!”….snort!… My friend said, “That’s why I always bring a mitt, because they always come way to close to me.”…grunt!…Then when the next several balls came really close he said, “You weren’t kidding! You must be a lucky charm! I want a ball!”… heh!… He did not get one, but they came close all day long! … wheeze!…She would love to catch a ball, but I think the mitt is more for protection than anything!…heh!

Wired!…We are too wired to go to sleep yet!…snort!…Goodnight to Staff and SiberH!…. pug-kisses!

Wow, what a day!!! I hope that Rio's friend can figure out a way for Rio to see a game live. Of course, we'd never hear the end of it so maybe it's just as well…..

Here is a Wolfie prayer, not as good as Rio's but Rio is pretty wired up right now….

Dear Lord of all creation, healer of hearts and souls and flesh, tonight we ask you to watch over Dan and help him toot. He has been through so much. We also thank you for our humble blog, for Chet's fine teeth, and for an exciting win high up in the Rockies. We ask you to be with each of us, and with those we love, and keep us safe from harm and close to your heart. And we give grateful thanks that September and TFAT is almost here! Amen.

And for Dan: we wish for the best outcome possible – and we mean that in more ways than one.

Kirby, you are a handsome doggie in your own way, just as all the other blog-doggies are. Stand up straight and tall! Be Proud! It's the Fatty Kitty Way.

Hecks O’ Fire we even got Fatty to say a “WOOOOOO” tonight!…Who’d a thought!…heh!

Melanie!… Many Pug Prayers will be said for Dan’s surgery tonight before I go to sleep in my oohh so soft bed filled with baseball toys!…snort!… It has absorbed many a fart in its time…sniff!… She has tried to wash it, but I keep guard over it during those ‘times’….grrrrrowwwl!… I was truly hoping it would not come to the Knife for Dan, but those surgeon guys know what they are doing and they live to perform surgeries …wheeze!…So please do not worry tonight and do get some sleep!…grunt!…Both you and Zoe I mean!….snuffle!…Good night all!….What a day!…
