Vieques (More)
Tonight we’re going swimming in a bioluminescent bay. What is that? Don’t ask me, but Bernie’s real excited. I’m excited, too. I always get excited when Bernie’s excited, plus swimming is exciting, so there you go.
Another thing about this island: you see members of the nation within the nation at the beaches. No horses at the beach, but they’re everywhere else, eating the grass nonstop. I ran around a whole bunch of them yesterday. We got along great!

Chet,
If you google bioluminescence, you’ll be able to find out a lot more about it. The bay
at Vieques in Puerto Rico is supposed to be the epitome of the phenomenon.
“Hidden along the Caribbean coast is one of the most spectacular Bioluminescent Bays in the world. The mysterious blue-green light is created by micro-organisms which thrive in an environment uniquely suited to their needs. A trip into the bay on a balmy night is a magical experience. Fish flash by in dark water, and a swim is like floating through stardust.” – Captain Sharon Grasso

Yeah. That bioluminescent water sounds like something I’d like to see. None of that here. Just ice and snow.

Good Morning All:
As a child we camped all over the United States and one of our favorite places was the Florida Keys. Totally cool bioluminescence. Of course, this was before all the people moved there.
We camped right on the beach of one of the Keys and could walk out to do snorkeling. Awesome.
I think that to do some of the vacations I did as a child, I would have to time travel back.

Chet: I’m dubious about your last sentence. Please describe the beach tomorrow. I’d never heard of such a thing before. (I’m looking out the window at freezing rain.)
9:21 am on December 30th, 2010
Good morning all.
Tyb: Thank you for the explanation.
Melanie: Can you describe the beach?
Dawson: I know what you mean. We have freezing rain falling on dirty snow.
And Socks (dog next door) just spotted a squirrel on my fence. He just wants to play…but the squirrel’s tail is flipping very quickly.

Bioluminescence!…. Why can’t they just go to Disney Land like everyone else?…gruffle!
Snow!… The snow wasn’t supposed to start till this afternoon…grunt!… Well, it started at 6:00am. I am worried about my friend. She is driving in the dark in the snow….snort!…I’m sure she will die on that highway today….snuffle!…This begs the question, who will feed me?…sniff!

We have SunShine! Might get above freezing but they’re not sure.
The Key was Bahia Honda. FL State gov has it set up differently than it was 40 years ago. (Jeeez) Long thin key. Camping was on the bay side not ocean. We camped on the sand just up from the water. We could walk out of tent, down the beach, snorkel, face mask and fins in hand get into the water, and watch the coral reef activity.
If we wanted waves we went over to the ocean side. No reefs there, just breaking waves up the sand. Great for body surfing.
In the evenings, twilight or later, we would sit in the water near the tent and just wave our arms and light would appear in the water wake. We’d also run and our feet and legs would kick up the light.
Awesome for kid or grownup. Bernie and Chet are right to be excited!

Good morning y’all! Mom and Dad are getting ready to go to the beach, so I won’t be around for a few days. I wish they could take me with them, but the state park won’t allow it 🙁 Instead, I’ll be hanging at the vet’s office boarding area. It’s pretty nice, but this is the first year I’ll be there without Buford. I hope I don’t get too lonely! I’ll have my bed and my new toy, so at least I’ll have something to do!
Rio: I hope your grandma is doing better. I’m sorry I wasn’t here last night to say that, but Mom and Dad ended up going to the emergency room at the army hospital. Last year Dad had an infected saliva glad, and he was sick as a dog! (Not sure where that comes from — I’m doing just fine!) Last night his jaw started swelling, and he didn’t want to go through that again, especially since they’ll be in a remote area. The doctor gave him some medicine, and now he’s feeling a lot better. I hope your grandma is, too!!!
Happy New Year y’all!!!

Good morning, plunders!
Day off! Yep, today and tomorrow are days off and paid holidays for me. Kinda new, the paid holiday thing.
New job is great, the work is very interesting. Can’t wait to really get into the thick of it all. Couldda shot a cannon off in the parking garage yesterday and not hit a thing. Not a lot of people working or cars. Got the phone/voice mail set up yesterday.
Mom! Yes, she is still here. she brought coffee and donuts for the 2-leggeds, just a scratch and hug for me.
Waiting for Ryan, our honey-do fix-it guy. Mom needs a kitchen drawer glued back together, and some other stuff nailed.
Errands! Mom needs a haircut, needs an oxygen sensor replaced on her trusty Toyota Camry. Me? I just need lunch. I’m hungry!
Exhibit! Mom and Grandma are going to the Grand Rapids Art Museum to see the Lady Diana exhibit this afternoon. The tiara, wedding dress and other froo froo stuff are there to see. Me, I just need my red collar with my name on it and I’m good to go.
Son! Kids are back from FL. Spent the evening with me and mom yesterday. They opened their Christmas gifts, mom got a purple snuggie. Mom took it out of the box and I immediately claimed it as MINE! It is in the dryer now getting all soft and sweet smelling (mom loves Gain!) and then it is MINE, MINE, MINE to lay on. Sweet Jasper dreams for me, baby!
Mom says she will put a pic of the kids on her Facebook that shows the ring, so you can see it.
Ryan’s here, gotta go. BBL.

Good morning! We learn so much on this blog. Melanie, you were lucky to get to do vacations like that as a child. Barb’s vacations were of 2 types: travel across Missouri to see grandparents, or fishing trips to the Rockies. Both were fun, but the ocean once or twice would have been nice, too.

Rio: It does not beg the question; it raises the question. You’re just being difficult.

B.Stover and Kindle people: I found it took me about 20 minutes to get used to the Kindle. I’m liking it now. Though I think I’ll get some sort of case.
B.Stover: Tana French is very wordy in the beginning of “In The Woods.” The Prolog, used to set the scene, and then most of Chapter One, is a snore. But then I like description of place and people through dialog.
Now that I’ve reached Chapter Two things are moving along.
I just find it amazing that a woman in the theater would use SO MANY words.

Thank you Melanie.
Here’s the Wikipedia article on bioluminescence. Apparently the same chemical reaction is what brings about the light in fireflies and glow-worms. Cool!

Riö, my Pug! Stay strong. Your friend will be okay and be back to feed you.
You need to stay strong for your friend. She’s been through a lot this year. Maybe she could sneak you in to Grandma’s place and have you lick her face. That would make anyone better!
Zoë took Franklin to see Dan. It took her forever to get Frank to Dan’s room. Everyone wanted to see the BIG BLACK DOG! When Frank saw Dan, the tail went and went and went and then he licked and licked and licked Dan’s face. If Dan had a tail it would have been going a mile a minute.
Big meeting today with Zoë, Dan and all the Rehab people. Will let you know how it goes.

Melanie: Amazon does sell covers for the Kindle. You can also get lights. However, the cover that I really like is from http://www.oberondesign.com They are really beautiful. Leather in various covers with various designs and nice silver clasps. The one for the Kindle 3 is $69 I think. You can order online and they usually send a thank-you gift: a silver charm.

Forgot–Melanie: I’m going to try to find the French novel that I read so I can figure out what I didn’t like.
Kirby: I hope your people have a great beach vacation. Sorry you can’t go.
Jasper: I’m glad the job is working out well.

That’s a good site Melanie. Of course, I had to look up “dinoflagellates” since I couldn’t imagine something half plant half animal. Here’s the Wikipedia article that contains a picture.

B.Stover: I looked at the site. I sort of remember all of that from college. I took Marine Biology and Oceanography for some of my “hard” sciences. I had a lot of fun.

This is one member of the nation within a nation you wouldn’t find on the beach, but I am glad you are enjoying your vacation, Chet, and telling us a little bit about it.
WOO WOO We are getting some snow and Arctic air is moving in. This is my idea of a holiday! WOO WOO

Barb is going to the librry after she gets off work at 1:00, and will try to pick up another Tony Hillerman book. Has read 3 so far, and she likes them. Thaks to Wookie’s dad for the recommendation.
She is reading this book about dog miracles. Not a great book, but there are some interesting stories in it. One is about a dog named Bobbie, part English Shepherd, like me, and part Scotch collie, which is like a cousin. In the 1920’s he was on a road trip with his people and got left in Indiana. They tried to find him, but were unsuccessful. 6 months later he showed up at home in Oregon, 2800 miles from where they lost him. There were some books written about him and his unbelievable journey home. Part of his trip was during the winter, so he went thru alot. TYB, that is a good example of ES smarts and devotion.

Unfortunately, I have some very sad news to report. My Dad got a message from Rio’s friend; her grandmother died this morning. His friend is on her way home from the not-so-busy-place, braving the snowstorm as well. My Mom helped me look back at some of the more recent posts Rio made about his friend’s grandmother, and I know that Rio and his friend did so much to make her last few days very happy ones, from the Thanksgiving “jailbreak” to Christmas dinner with the cottage cheese and green onion recipe. Nor, as Rio told us, could grandpa resist his big brown eyes and little yeep (or not so little yeep). Rio’s friend also made a very special Christmas present for her grandma, the beautiful quilled flower portrait that Rio shared with us on the blog, which I have copied below and which I am sure meant so much to her. I don’t think Rio will be posting today, but it would be very special for everyone to say a little prayer for Rio’s friend and Rio at this time of loss.

Wouldn’t it be grand . . .
to swim in warm bioluminescent water where for every move you make there is light. Light surrounds and caresses you as you float.
Every worry gone, every distress gone, every pain gone.
Then the water disappears, and you are still there, in the light.

Thank you all for being here more me and each other. Some people I know do not understand how you can feel so close to people that you have never met, but I know more about some of you than I do about my reclusive sister. Be kind to yourselves in the new year. If I did not have you guys, some days I would not have anyone to talk to at all.
Macy’s Mom.

I’m remembering some of the funny stories you told us about her and her spunky ways. Grandma will be remembered with love.

There is a whole sub-business inside the discipline of the mobile mobile phone sector place associated to the jailbreak or unlocking of the mobile phones so that they can be applied on any cellular network, and latest Supreme Court decisions in the USA handed down have confirmed that the jailbreak business is legal and legit. That is, conclude-user clients are rather inside of their legal rights to do what they wish to their mobile cellphone handset to permit the mobile phone to do the job on other network carriers which is generally recognized as jailbreak or unlocking the network block.
