What a great island, even though there are parts where you can’t go. Too dangerous, they say.

Maybe they don’t know that danger is my business. Mine and Bernie’s. We’re partners in the Little Detective Agency, in case I haven’t mentioned that recently.

Right now it’s very windy and we have to pick up all the stuff that got knocked down. So adios, which is what they say down here.

Good morning! Looks like the gang is still on vacation. An island where some areas are dangerous. Windy and rainy. Where do you think the are?

Repeating a post that we did late last night for Rio and Kirby

Don’t give up on the gift. It hasn’t come back this time, so I assume it’s getting closer and closer to delivery. Since the card had problems going through the mail, I put it in the box with the promised cookie. You should get it soon.
Kirby and Andrea–Congratulations. the portrait is magnificent

Aha! Vieques is an island that is part of Puerto Rico — means “little island.” According to Wikipedia, it’s been used by the Navy as a bombing range. Protesters eventually caused the Navy to depart in 2003. Known for some of the top beaches in the Caribbean — “azure-colored waters and white sands.” Sounds great — except for the rain and dangerous areas, of course!

I’ll have to look the island up on Google Earth. Totally cool software.

I sent OTAS’s F (Andrea) the url for yesterday’s posting so she can see that Kirby T was able to figure out the details of posting it.

YSAS and GF did not go out for their 1st year dating anniversary. It took her over 5 hours to drive the 3 hour trip. For some reason she didn’t want to get back in the car. So they are going out to eat tonight.

The night before last F and I were trying to figure out the new “Aperture 3” software I received. My guys were figuring out what they needed in weaponry and plans to get YSAS out of the city to NJ for a stand off against . . .

    Wait for it . . .

    My guys are weird.

Still trying to hook up the Kindle. Doesn’t seem to like the fact we have a Mac. The upstairs computer has some microsoft software on it. I’m going to try it up there.

We use a Mac also and had no trouble at all syncronizing the computer and the kindle.

  26. B.Stover
    1:57 pm on December 29th, 2010

Melanie and Tyb: I have the same question that Mollypop and Rio have. Why are you syncronizing the Kindle with the computer? Whispernet is what is used to download things from Amazon and that and the WiFi are built in. ???

  27. Riö - The Evil Pug
    2:00 pm on December 29th, 2010

Clarkson!….That’s what I thought too. What a big fat waste of money! …grunt!…. Unless, of course , it is an ingenious marketing ploy. After the “bad” publicity of actors being hurt time and time again, people who normally would not go see it will be lining up for the blood and guts that gets spilled at varying performances. …snort! …Hey, it might work!

  28. Melanie
    2:12 pm on December 29th, 2010

Hmm. So this is what is happening. It gives me the wifi here in the house, but will not work with that wifi even though I put in the correct password. YSAS is also having trouble with it (he has a Compac ? lap top).

We don’t have a wireless router. Our Mac works as a wireless router, wifi thingy. All the cell phones that the younger generation have, work off it seamlessly.

What happens is there is a lock next to our wifi and I can’t open that.

Do I have the wrong password? But then, why would it work for Blackberries, Droids, iPhones and mac laptops?

Is there something I can download to make it happy?

  29. Melanie
    2:36 pm on December 29th, 2010

Riö: YSAS thinks that just might work. Also . . .

GF found the following link about it. They think you would like it.

It is from a “sore” actor.

  30. Mollypop
    2:39 pm on December 29th, 2010

Melanie – You need to find out why there is a lock. Is that the same thing happening to YSAS? Is there a maximum of devices that can run on it?

  31. B.Stover
    2:41 pm on December 29th, 2010

Melanie: I’ll have to let Mollypop answer because I don’t know why you need a password.

  32. Melanie
    2:44 pm on December 29th, 2010

Okay . . I don’t think there is a maximum because a lot of the devices have left (with OTAS and F) and still not working.

I’m going to see if there is a different wifi lock on this computer.

  33. Tyb
    2:54 pm on December 29th, 2010

This is getting way beyond my understanding, but to answer your question B., I did the synchronization because someone (maybe Mollypop’s mom, maybe not) told me that I could. I’m glad I did because now I can pick up whichever one in handier and read from either the computer screen or the kindle. I prefer the kindle itself, but if I’m working on the computer and waiting for something to happen, I just open another screen and read.

  34. Mollypop
    3:06 pm on December 29th, 2010

Melanie – This might be your problem:

Select “connect” to connect to a network. If you see a lock symbol next to “connect,” the network requires a password to connect. If necessary, enter the Wi-Fi network password, and choose “submit.” Press the Symbol key to enter numbers or characters not present on the Kindle keyboard.
Once you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, Kindle automatically connects to it again whenever that network is in range. If more than one previously used network is in range, your Kindle automatically connects to the network that was most recently used.

When I helped Typ connect to the network for the first time, he had a problem (besides his big paws) with the password because of the SYMBOL key. You might not be entering the password correctly.

  35. B.Stover
    3:06 pm on December 29th, 2010

Tyb: You did that at right?

  36. Melanie

MollyPop: I gave up on the wifi. And the 3G? Snicker . . . I looked at the coverage map and we are right in the middle of REALLY big blank spot.

Soo . . . I went on the site got Kindle for Macs (free) then somehow or another was able to download from the site on to the Kindle when it was hooked up by USB cable.

Whew. So now I have the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes on the Kindle!

Now if I can just figure out what I did???

We don’t know much about computers, so we are going to stay out of that conversation.

Rio wants to know a few things about goats. Well, lets see, they like to climb on anything that presents a challenge to them. Along the same lines, they play king of the hill. They have 4 parts to their stomachs like cows, so they can chew their cud while relaxing. Goat milk can be made into a wonderful high quality soap. Goats are smart – much smarter than sheep. Male goats, Billys, like to pee on their front legs and beard, because the smell attracks female goats. Not sure why, but it works. Goats make great companions for horses and donkeys. Some companies, like Google, hire goats to clean up weedy areas. They are cheaper than human labor, and more environmetally friendly than using chemicals.

    Does that help?

    3:39 pm on December 29th, 2010

Melanie – I’m happy to see you got a book.

The more I think about it, however, the more I’m convinced that you weren’t entering the password correctly because of the SYMBOL key. Maybe YSAS could try that later for you. Curious minds want to know.

Tyb can tell you he had the same problem until we figured out this stupid symbol key.

Hey y’all! Mom and Dad just got back from taking everybody bowling and out to lunch. They brought back a doggie bag, but do you think I’ll see any of that grub? Me thinks not! They also had a “champagne” toast (with sparkling grape juice!) and gave my boy presents for graduation from paralegal school. One of the things he got was a law dictionary that weighs as much as I do! Then my girl and all the visiting dogs left to go back to Clemson. Now Mom has to run some errands to get readyy for their trip to the beach — including the things they forgot when they went grocery shopping this morning! I wish they’d just stay here and pay attention to me!!!

Just to satisfy your fascination with goats:
I am (I hope) attaching an incredible picture of goats on the face of a dam somewhere.
It is almost hard to believe that the goats actually walk across the face of this dam.

Barb and Maggie say that goats are good companions for horses. As a matter of fact it is believed that goats have such a calming effect on horses that they are often kept in stables with thoroughbreds in Kentucky to help the horses relax. The expression “to get one’s goat” comes from the fact that unprincipaled individuals would often break into the stall of a horse that was to compete with them in a race and steal his goat so that the horse would be upset and not so stiff as competition in the race. This I heard from an old friend in Lexington who used to breed and race horses. I don’t know whether they still keep goats with the horses; it wouldn’t surprise me if they do.
You have to look closely at this picture to see the goats. Since I heard once that someone doesn’t like us to attach two pictures at once, I’ll send this one and
do another post with a second shot that shows the goats better. All of the dark
spots on the face of this dam are goats.

B – You should have no concern with cell phone towers around your Kindle. Melanie was talking about going with 3G. I think yours is Wifi, correct?

  46. Barb & Maggie
    5:19 pm on December 29th, 2010

Bee, Feta originally was made with sheep or goat milk, but I think they use cow’s milk alot in the U.S.

TYB, Horses are a herd animal, so they are calmer when they are with other animals. I think they started putting a goat in the stall with race horses, because the goats are easy to get along with. They don’t want to take a chance with a valuable horse getting kicked by another horse, and the goat is small, so it isn’t too crowded in the stall.

That was very interesting about “getting your goat” Didn’t know that.

Rio, knew you would take that little pee tidbit and run with it!Not only are billys smelly, but their long beard turns a golden yellow color!

Mom doesn’t have an e-book yet, but she’d like to get one. When she does, though, she’s not going to get a Kindle, since her library’s downloadable books do not work with Kindles. Sony E-readers, Nooks and others are supported by OverDrive, which is what her library has. It also works with some of the Apple products, and more are being added soon. When she flew to Washington for her dad’s operation, she took a stack of paperbacks with her, then donated them to the family waiting room for others to read. Then she bought some more books for the trip back at the bookstore in the airport. An e-book would have made that trip much easier!!!

We have been busy here Rio, but we just read through the blog so you will not have a Kat free day. 😀 So not sorry…

All us Kats and Staff are putting our prayers up there for Grandma. I know she is strong strong strong and our prayers will help. Cuddle close to your friend tonight and keep her happy. I am glad she has you to comfort her as she has gone through a lot this last year.

One of the reasons I have not gotten an ereader is that in North Dakota our house is in a spot that is difficult to service. For some reason most service providers do not want to put up lots of cell towers when there are only a few houses every few miles. Snort!
Even our cell phone is roaming at home. And only Verizon works. So no ATT or Apple IPhones. It used to be that we could only get service up on the second floor but now I can get it downstairs too, but it is still ROAMING.

Our little phone company has it’s own network and so we have DSL at home. They only had to pull it a mile for us. (Their limit is 2.5 miles) I assume that as long as we were hooked up to the computer we could download books. WhisperNet? Never heard of it.

I’m glad the package finally got there and that you like it. How about Wait Until Dark. Is that a great movie or what? We, too, are sending our prayers and positive energy for Grandma.

More cat prayers for Grandma, Rio. Hope she feels better very soon.

We just spend 2 1/2 hours catching up on the postings since Christmas Eve. We had family come on Christmas day and stay through Tuesday morning. But what fun for Mom and Dad! Not so much for us. We were locked up in the bedroom since a couple of the folks are allergic to cats. Mom has been working longer hours this week and has been so tired when she gets home that she hasn’t turned on the computer at all.

But now we are back! We kept thinking about all of you that live in the Northeast because the news here made it sound like the entire eastern seaboard was covered in mountains of snow. Hope Audry got to go with SQ to his tropical island and isn’t home alone in all that mess.

Rio, love on your friend a little more than usual. It has been a tough year for her, and we know she worries about Grandma even though she will be fine.

    Good night, all.
