Veterans Day
Bernie’s walking around the house, trying to memorize some kind of speech. Here he comes now, forehead all wrinkled. Memorizing speeches doesn’t look easy. Just one more reason why being me seems to be working out fine.
“Hitler knows that he will have to break us in this island or lose the war. If we can stand up to him, all Europe may be freed and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands. But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, This was their finest hour.”
Thanks for your service in WWII, Dad.

Go Bernie! Go PSQA's Dad! Go Dan! Go Harold (my Grandfather)! Go Arnold (my Great Uncle)!
Go all those who have honored us by honoring our country!
3:40 am on November 11th, 2010
Ditto those above, plus thanks Barb's dad, Bill, and her Uncle Tom, both WWII veterans. And thank you to all those who have given of their time, or even their lives, for our country. We are so fortunate to be able to live here.

The funeral for my Boy's friend and college roommate, Blake Whipple, who was killed in Afghanistan, will be on Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a care package be sent to any deployed soldier.

Honoring all our veterans and their families and friends for their many sacrifices, and with the utmost sadness, especially to those who have given their lives.
4:31 am on November 11th, 2010
A veteran is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America ' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'
Thanks to all and their families for their sacrifices.

Echoing the salutes to all our brave Veterans who made our world as safe and comfortable as it is today. Our Guild participates in the Home of the Brave Project – making quilts for families of fallen Veterans. The quilts are based upon the Civil War Sanitary Commission pattern. Very moving and a small thank you for the sacrifice those families have made on our behalf.
Staff, you might be interested in this project – each state has a coordinator for this initiative and contact information is on their website if "googled." Hope the things from Houston were spectacular.
Today is our local Quilter's Quest – visiting 11 quilt shops in our area for a prize! Woo-woo.
5:01 am on November 11th, 2010
You have all said everything so beautifully.
5:14 am on November 11th, 2010
Debbie LM – How lucky you are to live in an area that has 11 quilt shops. We have a few small ones, here and there, but we do have one that went online in addition to the store.

Today!… It is very snowy and cold outside…snort!… I felt sorry for her when she had to leave and drive that long drive to the not-so-busy place….grunt!… She emailed me and said the drive was very scary to say the least. Cars were driving off the road because they were going too damned fast. Happens every year, everyone has to re-learn how to drive on the snow and ice. … yeesh! …Some of them never do learn and then they put the rest of the commuters at risk….grunt!
5:57 am on November 11th, 2010
I will say thank you to Mr Staff and join my sister's in saying thank you to both our parents. Maggie, our Mom was a WAC and stationed in India where she taught instrument flight (radar, our secret weapon) to the pilots going 'over the hump' to get supplies into Burma.
Dad was on a troop ship going east to invade Japan when the bombs were dropped. He ended up spending his time in Korea.
Mr Staff was in Vietnam.
11 quilt shops in your area! DebbieLM now I am jealous. If we didn't have Faye's we would have to drive over 100 miles round trip to visit a quilt store. Yes we have a group here doing the Veteran's quilts. We have done quite a few as my good friend, also named Deb, is the regional coordinator.
5:59 am on November 11th, 2010
Oh, by the way BStover,
Our parents met at Wayne State in Detroit where they were both getting educated on the GI bill. Maggie was going for her Master's in English when I came along and interrupted that. Dad had to finish his degree at night school and by the time he finished he was supporting 3 kids.
6:31 am on November 11th, 2010
Staff!…Very interesting that both of your parents are Veterans of WWII…snort!…How wonderful that you will get to spend Thanksgiving with them this year…wheeze!…Thanksgiving will be quite different for my friend and her mother this year…grunt!… Her brother has to work so it will just be the two of them and ME ME ME!..heh!…More for me I betcha!…sneeze! Grandma may or may not be with us at that time…sigh.
PTSD!…. I worry about all the guys and gals coming home from the war these days….snort!… It seems to me this PTSD is a very serious issue right now and affecting tons of veterans…grunt!
6:46 am on November 11th, 2010
Staff: I got my PhD from Wayne State. Was your mother ever able to finish her master's degree? Your dad did well getting his and supporting three kids. I know how hard working full time and going to school part time can be.
Sorry about the snow elsewhere. It's sunny and 52 here.
6:58 am on November 11th, 2010
Staff, That is so cool that Maggie was a WAC. Those women were amazing and didn't get all the credit they deserved.
Woolfie, You said the boys were MIA, and you mentioned Mom and Dad. Is Dad back at home? We hope so. What are they going to do about the boys? It seems like things have been almost overwhelming at home.
Rio, Barb really likes Kevin Spacey, too. The Bobby Darin project was one of Barb's favorites. He wrote, directed, and starred in that one, as well as doing the singing. What talent!
Abbie and AJ, Any more luck with your mouse hunting? What do you do with the critters after you catch them? Myself, I never eat the big mousies that I catch. Not even any body parts. I bet you girls do a little disecting. Barb lets me keep the big mouse (i.e. rat) out in the yard for a day after the catch. When I go outside, I always remember where I left it. Usually I run over, throw it in the air, and then bark at Barb a couple of times till she tells me what a good girl I am. I like lots of praise.
7:04 am on November 11th, 2010
Hey!…That cruise ship, The Carnival Splendor, has finally docked…snort!… All those people are finally going to get off the ship…sniff!….I wonder how many of them will go on a cruise next year….heh!
7:15 am on November 11th, 2010
MagPie!…Too bad you and Bard did not hear the hour long interview with Mr. Spacey yesterday on NPR…snort!…It was excellent. They did play a song he sang for that movie…grunt!…Too bad the movie was kind of a flop. His singing ability is amazing. Have you ever heard him sing “Mack The Knife”?….wow! … There for a while he was not making many movies because of being busy getting The Old Vic back in operation in London…wheeze!…Now he says he will be in more films….woooo!…His next movie coming out next month is called, Casino Jack, I believe….grunt! …He talked a lot about how he researched the part….sniff!
7:18 am on November 11th, 2010
I heard that many of those people said they will NEVER do another cruise.
Did anyone else hear about the ebook that was being offered thru Amazon (I think) called something like Pediphilia, Guide to Love and Romance. It was on the news this morning. Is that sick or what! Amazon said it violated free speech not to offer it, then later it was removed.
7:23 am on November 11th, 2010
Rio, One of the criticisms of that movie was that he was too old to be playing the part, as Kevin in now about 50. However, that did not bother Barb in the least. His singing was so right-on that you would have thought it was Bobby singing.
7:56 am on November 11th, 2010
Ole Kev!…Yeah, he was definitely too old to be playing Bobby Darren…heh!…He talked about that movie yesterday too…sniff!…MagPie did you ever see Swimming With Sharks? … snort!… Excellent Spacey movie. He plays a horrible movie producer in that one to the max…heh!
8:15 am on November 11th, 2010
BStover,
No on the Master's. Maggie had 6 children and she is a wonderful strong parent. She said that in the 50's there was a lot of propaganda about smart people having kids so the dumb people wouldn't control the world and she fell for it. She also said if there had been birth control available when she was of that age there would have been many less children. Once she told me what birth control methods resulted in our births. Sort of funny.
Heh
Maybe we all took it to heart because there are only 3 grandchildren from those kids.
Magpie,
Alice and Abbie have quit hunting so I might find a corpse soon. They don't bring it to us, we have to find it. Sometimes we don't until it starts to smell. Ish. I wish they would bring it out and let us praise them. Much easier on us.
8:45 am on November 11th, 2010
Winston Churchill! One of our heroes! We love his words and he did so much to get England through WWII.
Thank You to Spence's dad for his service and to all our Veterans and members of the military. There was a nice 88 year old guy who used to bring his dog to the dog park. He landed on Iwo Jima the first day. Mom got him to talk about it a little bit. He has since passed on. His kids are taking care of the dog now. We miss him and all our WWII Veterans we have lost to time.
Sam, that is a good suggestion about sending a care package to a military person. Mom buys stuff for the Mothers who send over those care packages.
8:46 am on November 11th, 2010
Happy Veterans Day everybody!!!! Thank you to all who have served!! 😀 🙂 You made me a happy puppy.
8:57 am on November 11th, 2010
Barb, I know about the book that you mentioned that Amazon is selling. I hope there will be enough of a outcry that Amazon will STOP IT.
Wolfie, I am mad along with you. I am mad that your family has to go through this heartache and stress. I don't have to be there to know that you guys have done your best. All of you deserve better than this.
Melanie has an appointment for her knee today and Stover goes to the doctor this evening
Rio, I hope your friend has an easier drive home. Some drivers and big rigs think snow means "step on it". They do that here also.
9:07 am on November 11th, 2010
We had a visitor stop by our house last night, a very nice man with a very shiny badge. I was hoping that he would give me treats the way that the fireman gave Chet treats, but no such luck.
Still…..my boys are out of control, and working on the advice of our therapist, CPS and the school, Mom and Dad are making them accountable for their behavior. So, everytime they go AWOL, they are reporting them to the sheriff. Last week they were truant from school for two whole days and tried to take the school bus home, and ended up at the sheriff substation.
The bad part is that they are now doing drugs and are hanging out with all the other bad kids, including some drug dealers.
And they are fighting other kids.
Chad and Cody are mixed up, angry, and totally out of touch with reality, which is why everyone thinks that a visit to Juvenile Hall would be a Good thing. They will be 18 in 57 days, whatever that means.
9:10 am on November 11th, 2010
Oh, and yes, Dad is home now. Since the boys are blaming Mom for Everything, Dad is very protective and does not want Mom home alone now. He doesn't need to worry, because even though I love my boys, I am a smart dog. I do not like the way Chad and Cody smell and I am protective of Mom.
9:37 am on November 11th, 2010
Wolfie: All of you have done everything possible. I hope the boys get back in touch with reality.
Staff: With six children your mother did much more than get a degree! She sounds like fun.
9:38 am on November 11th, 2010
Wolfie, I am very glad your dad is home and I know your mom is smart enough to know that she is not to blame for the problems the boys are having.
Barb, that book is now GONE from Amazon…poof..just like that. This news was on my home page.
9:39 am on November 11th, 2010
Wolfie!…You are my hero…sniff!… You hang in there pal and protect your family. I wonder what will happen to the twins when they turn 18…. snort!…Sad that they cannot see what they are doing to everybody….grump!
9:39 am on November 11th, 2010
Mollypop: That's a cute kitten on the favorite fabric page. I like the squares with the coffee theme.
10:16 am on November 11th, 2010
Kats!…What is it with Kats and fabric?…snort!… They just can’t stay away from it by golly…sniff! …I wonder where that Fattie Kat is today….grunt!….And I’m not talking about AbbieTheKat…heh!
10:21 am on November 11th, 2010
Staff, Are Dawson and the The Librarian the ones that had kids?
Melanie and Bee, Good luck at the doctors.
Barb had 3 biopsies done Tuesday, so she was a nevous wreck. She sort of feels like Rio's friend does – go to the doctor and nothing good comes of it. She spent some anxious time, but they came out ok. She does have to have some surgery Monday, but she will tell you about it this weekend.
Wolfie, Your Mom and Dad have really hung in there and done all they can do for the boys. Part of their problem is blaming others and not taking personal responsibility. Mom and Dad have to take care of themselves and their mental and physical well being too.
10:26 am on November 11th, 2010
Because of Wolfie's boys early life and a drug dependant bio mother, they may have some real disability that makes it dififcult to empathize with others. They probably are unable to see what their behavior is doing to those who love them.
10:27 am on November 11th, 2010
That speach always gives us goosebumps. How wonderful that there are young men willing and able to serve our country. And that this country is still the greatest place to live !
Wolfie, our hearts go out to your Mom&Dad. It's a tough world to grow up in these days and some kids aren't able to handle the pressure. We are holding you in our thoughts and prayers that you will find the right way to handle this trying time.
Thank you to all our boys overseas now and in the past.
10:40 am on November 11th, 2010
Siber, Glad that book is gone! I know we are supposed to have freedom of speech in this country, but when we see the skin heads rallying, or the KKK, or that dope from Nebraska that shows up at the funerals of the gay soldiers, we have a hard time with it.
11:13 am on November 11th, 2010
My favorite Kevin Spacey movie is Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
We has a wonderful day. It is so unusually warm that everyone was out taking advantage of it. 65 degrees!
Wolfie – In New York State, 18 is the age where kids are no longer juveniles. They have to take the consequences of their actions, which is what the therapist is saying. Your Mom and Dad have had too much to bear. Cuddle them.
11:35 am on November 11th, 2010
Molly!…My favorite Spacey movie is The Usual Suspects….grunt!
11:59 am on November 11th, 2010
Doctor!… I wonder if Stover has gone to the doctor yet?…snort! …I hope she gets some help with her lungs…grunt! … It’s the shits when you can’t breath right….wheeze!
12:10 pm on November 11th, 2010
I'm off to the doctor now. Toodles (who used to say that?) until later.
12:23 pm on November 11th, 2010
Rio. I really liked The Usual Suspects too. I thought the ending was one of the best movie endings I had ever seen.
Wolfie — I truly sympathize with what you, your mom and dad are going through. Tough love is never easy, but at times its the best way forward.
Barb, Melanie and Stover — I hope you all come through your medical situations with flying colors. Doggie prayers for all of you.
And a special thank you on this Veterans Day to all those who have served and are serving our country's defense in times of need, including grandpa who was on a ship in the Pacific heading towards Japan when WWII fortunately ended.
Wookie
12:26 pm on November 11th, 2010
NPR!…There is a story on NPR's webpage about how Kats lap up liquid….snort!…Dogs do it the right way, and you can see this on the webpage in slow motion…grunt!
http://www.npr.org/2010/11/11/131241860/pet-physi…
12:29 pm on November 11th, 2010
Good luck at the doctor.
Wolfie, how sad, good luck with everything, you are a brave dog protecting your family like that.
I'm not a major Spacey fan but he was so good in LA Confidential.
12:31 pm on November 11th, 2010
Wookie, Is Grandpa the one we saw petting you with your Halloween scarf on?
12:32 pm on November 11th, 2010
Good luck Bee!
2:02 pm on November 11th, 2010
A few days ago Macy showed a vicious dog attack on an alligator. So I went through Mom's stuff and I found an equally vicious polar bear attack. I'm warning in case you want to turn away.

2:20 pm on November 11th, 2010
Liz!….The Blasphemy that seeps from your lips!…gasp!… “…not a major Spacey fan..”…ack! You have not seen some of his plays, or other amazing films then my dear….snort!…Wookie is in the know. wink wink nod nod!… grunt!
Stover!… I hope she comes away from the doctor with good news. I do worry about her…sniffle!… I wonder how Melanie is doing today… sigh!…This is why it is way better to not like anybody, because now I have to worry about these guys….double grump!
Kirby!…If you are out, have you been watching the Next Iron Chef?,…heh!…These cooking contest shows are addicting…snorkle!
2:21 pm on November 11th, 2010
Kirby!…I meant, if you are out there!…snort!
2:33 pm on November 11th, 2010
Molly, I wonder if that is Knute in Germany when he was a little tyke. I think that was his name, and I have no idea if my spelling is correct.
Me too, Rio, I am worried about Melanie and Stover, but very glad to learn that Barb got good results from her biopsies She is having surgery on Monday and might as well be prepared now for us to worry about her.
2:36 pm on November 11th, 2010
Oh my God! That polar bear attacked a 2-legged! Never seen that before. I don't why the humans in my household are 'aww-ing' at that attack…
DDoB:
😛 😀 😐 🙁 🙂
2:38 pm on November 11th, 2010
Mollypop, i hope that person survived the attack. SH i think you're right about who the bear is.
Sorry Rio – maybe i haven't seen enough of Spacey. But compared to Denzel Washington, i mean… there's just no contest…
2:46 pm on November 11th, 2010
Liz!…Denzel and Spacey in a movie together!…Wow-ooo!…snort!…That would be way to much talent in one movie!…heh!
Bears!… I didn’t know Polar Bears could be so little…sneeze!…I bet his little teeth are sharp though…sniff! …At first I thought he was an albino squirrel…heh!
2:47 pm on November 11th, 2010
Lil Lexi!… Hi.
2:59 pm on November 11th, 2010
Whew, what a lot to catch up on.
Wölfie: Give some hugs, tail wags and slurppy kisses to your Mom and Dad. Your boys probably are not smelling all right now. You guys hang tight. Hard to do when you love them so much. Just remember, that though you love them, you don't have to like what they are doing. .
Barb: Let us know what's up when you have your brain in order. Make sure MagPie does a lot of loving, but don't take any dead rats from her. At least this weekend.
B. Stover: Hope you are okay.
Riö: Kats and Fabric? I want to know what it is about people dressing up their pugs and putting pictures of it on the web. .
3:07 pm on November 11th, 2010
I have walking pneumonia. The doctor gave me meds and I have to go back on Tuesday.
3:08 pm on November 11th, 2010
Melanie!… I want to know what’s up with the Pug-Dressing also!…snort!… There is no way in HELL she can make me dress up. Its hard enough taking photos of me…heh!…I just want to know if those other guys are being drugged or something to get them in those ridiculous costumes…grunt!
3:08 pm on November 11th, 2010
I know there were other conversations I missed but I'm being the scarecrow today!
Met with the knee doc. He was very serious. I am not. I mean here he is telling me I have something that can be fixed and isn't a death sentence. I'm in 7th heaven.
Yeah, it's a very rare disease, but my whole body is weird, so course it's rare.
I have synovial chondromatosis. Isn't that great? It isn't related to the HCV or anything else I have wrong with me.
They will be doing another MRI, then a knee arthroscopy. As he said, I've got a lot of floating bodies in there. (snicker)
I told him I had thought maybe it was Alien technology micro-chips. He just got a confused look on his face and nodded. (rolling my eyes here)
Anyhoo, he's only seen one other case 20 some years ago and did this procedure and the guy never had to have another one.
Hopefully, I'll be back walking my mile or so a day sooner rather than later.
3:11 pm on November 11th, 2010
I'm picturing B.Stover's lungs getting walked by New Moania. Some weird guy. Probably from Fringe.
3:14 pm on November 11th, 2010
Riö! Now I remember . . Kevin Spacey. Love him. Great actor.
He is doing "The Bridge Project". Using actors from England and America they tour through out America and England doing Shakespeare.
Tried getting YSAS in to get seen, but at that time they were only seeing Union actors. He's now Union, but they aren't looking for anyone.
Jeez
3:21 pm on November 11th, 2010
Good to hear from both Melanie and Stover, and you both have something that can be cured! Melanie, I think you have a pretty smart doctor since he figured this out, but has only seen one other case.
Both of you…thanks for checking back in with us.
Stover, this is a good reason to take it easy and do fun things like read or watch tv.
3:27 pm on November 11th, 2010
Stover!… I am so glad it was nothing more serious, but my friend says Walking Pneumonia is nothing to sneeze at …snort!…She caught it about 10 years ago and was laid up for weeks it seemed ….grunt!…She laid on the couch and watched the new cooking shows and the Bush vs Gore election fall-out… misery!… I am relieved that you will now be on the mend with your meds in hand….wheeze!
3:28 pm on November 11th, 2010
Now you guys are probably glad you went to the doctors. We will have to Google Melanie's ailement tomorrow, but glad everyone is fixable.
Have had a long day and haven't had dinner yet, so BBL.
3:30 pm on November 11th, 2010
Thank you guys for your concern. It makes me feel better.
I think the bear is cute! Don't you Lexi?
Melanie: How is your knee?
3:33 pm on November 11th, 2010
Melanie!…Keep an eye on Mr. Spacey and his projects. He talked a lot about using young actors from NYC and London in his theater productions….snort!…Seriously, you should research what is going on over there in the Old Vic….grunt!… I bet if you heard the interview, you and Clarkson would have gleamed a lot more from that part of it than I did… snuff!… I just know he is big on bringing in young new actors into his fold…wheeze! …Wouldn’t that be WONDERFUL for Clarkson?…wow!
3:34 pm on November 11th, 2010
It sounds like both of you need lots of rest. Lots of time on the couch. With chocolate.
3:36 pm on November 11th, 2010
Barb and Maggie. Yes, that is grandpa. He is 91 and a half, and still walks about 2-3 miles every day (with one of those rolling carts). He's a professional tummy giver also. Wookie
3:46 pm on November 11th, 2010
Hey!…Wookie, your Grandpa is the same age as our Grandma….snort!…She does not walk in mileage, but is a keen bingo player…heh!
3:53 pm on November 11th, 2010
Melanie: You're making me laugh. Sorry I didn't see your post about the knee before my previous post. I'm glad it's fixable.
And I do plan to take it easy. Doctor's (and Plunderers')orders!
4:02 pm on November 11th, 2010
Liz: Hey…chocolate! Yes.
4:07 pm on November 11th, 2010
So Melanie and B are fixable. Good news. A little surgery here, some meds there, and hopefully you will both up to fighting with Rio again. He will take advantage of your weakened states so be on the lookout.
I make it sound so easy, but of course it's not. Mom had pneumonia many years ago and also spent weeks on the couch. As for knee surgery, Mom had that last Fall and she's ready for skiing if we ever get snow.
4:08 pm on November 11th, 2010
LizF: I think I dream of chocolate!
Let us all rest and have chocolate (except for Chet and four legged pals, they can have Slim Jims) before all the cooking and feasting coming up!
TTFN
4:11 pm on November 11th, 2010
Stover!… I would love to come snuggle with you all day long and play book worm and eat, eat, eat. I could nip your ears and you could even maybe look at my tail but no touching…snort!… if only I could leave my yard….drat!
4:22 pm on November 11th, 2010
Scarecrow!… I am hoping you need only one procedure on your knee to get all the floating alien beings out of your knee and then you and Patsy will be roaming the countryside again like old times!…woooo!… I really am going to say some powerful Pug Prayers for you dear Melanie …snorkel!
4:33 pm on November 11th, 2010
Rio, maybe pugs are just the natural transvestites of the dog world? That's how they get them to do dress-ups.
4:41 pm on November 11th, 2010
LIZ!… gasp!… I can hardly believe what I am reading…snort!… “…natural transvestites of the dog world”….grump!… We Pugs are laughed at enough for our natural beauty…sniff!…No need to succumb to the embarrassment of being dressed in ridiculous clothing created by humans!…grunt!… Those guys were all tricked or bribed in some way to put on those outfits…snort!…Believe you me no self respecting Pug would Dress Up and be Photographed!… ugh!
4:47 pm on November 11th, 2010
Liz!… I hope that sketch you do of me is not a “Dress Up” sketch!…snort!…That would break my heart for sure… sniffle!… I am NOT a dress up guy except for the occasional Black Tie for special parties….grunt!
4:52 pm on November 11th, 2010
Rio: I'm laughing! I'd love to play Bookworm with you.
4:56 pm on November 11th, 2010
B.Stover!…You need to get your butt to bed right now my lady!…grump!… Did you NOT hear the Doctor and the Plunder’s orders!…grump!…No messing around tomorrow either…dammit!…You can post on the blog, because any sick person is welcome to do that…heh!
5:04 pm on November 11th, 2010
Oh, okay Rio, note to self: no bikini for the pug. I apologise for offending your natural manly qualities!
5:10 pm on November 11th, 2010
OHhh LizE,
Do it, do it please. Dress Commander Rio up really cute. Maybe a little ribbon on his curly little tail. A ribbon with a pouffy bow. I can just see it now.
heh heh heh heh heh heh heh heh HEH!
I would pay good money, or maybe even some of my Salmon treats, to see that.

I knew about the quilt and it's gorgeous – there's a lot of pug action on there… But the rest of it i missed, dammit. The main reason is that I'm at work when you guys are chatting so I can't really check in that much (i shouldn't be doing it now, actually) and then i don't have time to catch up with 100 comments.
I'm sorry i missed the 12 newfs puppies.
The ARC?? Rockie the Squirrel????
