On Sunday we normally do beginnings, taking a look at the start of a Peter Abrahams novel, including those written under the Spencer Quinn moniker, but today we thought: How about posting some quote on Valentine’s Day from the Chet and Bernie series? Except, after a less than exhaustive search, we couldn’t find a single one! Well, what about plain old love? There’s plenty of that. This is from Heart of Barkness:

Hey, Shermie,” Bernie said. “What are you doing on the loose?”

Exactly! Hadn’t we sent him up the river not so long ago? No water in that particular river, but not the point. Why wasn’t he in an orange jumpsuit and doing whatever they do up at Northern State when the hot sun goes down and they have to stop with the rock breaking?

“Early parole,” Shermie said. “On account of overcrowding. This is a civilized country, don’t forget.”

“It’s hard sometimes,” Bernie said.

Shermie laughed and slapped his knee. It sounded like a gunshot. “You can say that again.”

Bernie did not. Instead he went with, “You’re the bouncer here?”

“My mom’s tight with the owner,” said Shermie. His face pinkened a bit. Was Shermie blushing? I’d seen plenty of human blushing, but never on a face like that. Right away I knew it was one of those once-is-enough things.

“Everybody loves somebody sometime,” Bernie said.

“Wow!” said Shermie. “That’s so true!”

How many once is enough things does it take to learn something?
    Super Sunday to all!

I’m laughing at what BStover is laughing at. Oops, sorry for ending the sentence with a preposition, although that is allowed these days, isn’t it?

BooBear: I saw that horrendous pile up down your way. Yikes!
One trick to stop pipes from freezing overnight is to leave the cupboards open for under the sink cabinets in kitchen, bathrooms and where ever there are pipes. Also, you could leave the water on, just at a drip. If they do start to freeze, use a hair dryer to thaw before the pipes burst.

Yesterday I hired someone to take some of the snow off the roof. As long as he was here I had him shovel off and widen all the paths to the back door and garage. It’s the time of year when I get real tired of shoveling so Happy Valentine’s Day to me.

Happy birthday to some of our favorite Snowhook Kennel dogs!

Dawson. Please remember and never forget. A preposition is a bad thing to end a sentence with!

On that note, happy Valentines Day to all.

Oh, I know an off color joke about ending a sentence with a preposition. Slightly dog related.

It will be a quite V-day today. The sun is out. The high today 66. Diana pawPrints is fed.

We had a lie-in today in that Diana did not want to get up and was laying on top of me from my feet to my chest; all 100 lbs of her. So while she had me pinned down, snoozing, I read a few more chapters of Heart of Barkness. I’ve been reading about 20 min. a night off an on, trying to make the book last. Will do the same with Of Mutts and Men hoping I get get them to last until the new book is out. I don’t think I’ll make if but if I’m only a few months short, that will be enough.

MLIUPPA has more discipline than I do. Also more stamina. I can never complain about a 23-lb Mr. Big on my chest ever again.

16 degrees here. Supposed to be 30 on Wed and Thur. Sadie and I will look forward to that. Sadie has been outside on her bed for 5 hours but she just heard the chime of the microwave and wanted in. You’d think she was hard of hearing but a microwave, a can opener or a crinkle of paper gets her attention. lol

VALENTINE! I got a VALENTINE! And it wasn’t from my parents.

A huge Thank You to Dawson and TPTB that resulted in a print out of The Iggy Papers arriving today. Plus a bonus gift. (I *love* them) I can’t thank you enough.

There is so much I am supposed to be doing today. But I’m not. I’m stopping everything and sitting down and reading the Iggy Papers. The dog is fed and I can wait for my dinner. I can wash my hair tomorrow. The Iggy Papers can’t wait.

El Centro is fine (and affordable) to those that like desert heat. I’ve never been much for hot and dry. I don’t understand those that live year round in Palm Springs or Borrego. Growing up in coastal So. Cal. anything below 68f is too cold and anything above 72f is too hot. If I want snow, I can always visit it about 45 min. away. Then I can drive back and go to the beach.

The high today was 67, so cold. But I’m still in a t-shirt and shorts.

Downside, we’re arid so the water bill is always too high. Upside? I can garden pretty much year round. And I don’t have to start seedlings inside or in a hothouse.

I am keeping all of the lovely stamps on the envelope. I don’t know anyone that collects them but when schools are back in session for in person, I’ll contact some old colleagues and see if there are any teachers that would be interested in that sort of thing for their students.

Mlaiuppa: Lol, so much for making it last. I’m happy you got your valentine.

El Centro. I was telling Mlaiuppa that the man-who-lives-in-this-house has a stake in a place down her way. We’ve never been down there but his sister goes every winter (except this one).

    WATP: Snicker!

It’s probably been 45-50 years since I’ve been through El Centro. I’m sure it’s changed a lot. Used to be just a farming community. Big on Dates. But I’m sure that has changed a lot. But it’s still the middle of the desert. If you like that sort of thing. I imagine it is quite appealing if you are in the midst of months of snow and ice.
